About 500 seats per airplane and the airlines' owners. But what they and the more than 50 other affiliated airlines share is changing how travelers get from hometowns to big cities across the country. In the past two years the majority of commuter airlines carriers serving small- and medium-sized markets with planes seating less than 60 have entered joint marketing agreements with larger carriers. In Burlington only one regional carrier, Pilgrim Airlines, remains unattached. Virtually every major airline has announced such an agreement and sometimes more than one, said Alan Stephen, executive vice president of the Regional Airline Association.

Most of those deals have been made in the last 18 months, he said. At the same time, the larger airlines are fed passengers from the smaller cities that are difficult and uneconomical for them to serve. "You really have to do it in this day and age to get the passenger boarding- it's free enterprise, it's a whole new game," said Pat Fraser of Brockway Air. The IBM PC and XT carry 90-day warranties; PCjr and AT models have one-year warranties. With no support expenses, "gray market" retailers discount prices as much as 40 percent, compared with 5 percent to 10 percent an autho-rizd IBM dealer usually offers. IBM spokeswoman Angela A. Buonocore says the company has received complaints from PC purchasers who discovered they have no warranty coverage after buying from "gray market" stores. CALL BEFORE LEAP: Florida residents soon will be able to call a hot line to find out if a security or firm is registered with the state and if there have been any complaints against the security or firm.

Residents of other states can call to check out "We came under this contract so we will fill airplanes," Fraser said. Their joint marketing agreement exemplifies why and how many airlines are becoming affiliated. As a Piedmont Commuter, Brockway will continue to fly to the same towns, but QVocllvAii Air "It's a very controversial issue," Stephen said. "Many in the industry feel, from the interest of competition, that a code (of a regional airline) should compete with another regional code," he said. An equal number of people support code-sharing, he said.

Cathie Merrihew, a travel counselor with Ask Mr. FosterAccent Travel in Burlington, said most agents do not give preference to well-known airlines. Also, the agents can differentiate between the airlines, despite their shared code, by their flight numbers and the plane's numbers. "It's very easy for us to read," Merrihew said. Most agents will tell the passenger if they will be flying on a regional airline, she said.

The airline's name may make a difference to less experienced agents and to agents booking flights in unfamiliar places, she said. "For someone who hasn't worked in the industry that long there may be name recognition" bias, she said. Merrihew said fares and better connections, more than name recognition or computer code-sharing, are the advantages of joint marketing agreements. "I think it has worked very well. I don't think there is any question that it has speeded up connections and made fares drop," she said.

Although airline spokesmen agreed the affiliations mean lower fares, no one could calculate the amount saved. "I can't quantify the fares. But with code-sharing you are going to see a variety of discount fares," Stephen said. For every flight on a Piedmont Com Dean Tatro, regional sales manager for Bar Harbor Airlines. The airline's Burlington schedule, which includes flights to Portland, "could be effected," he said.

Vice President of Pilgrim Airlines, John Gallichon, said the line has remained independent since its beginning in the 1960s and does not plan any change. "We have been talking with major carriers but we are not overwhelmingly convinced," he said. Most of Pilgrim's routes, which include flights from Burlington to Hartford, and Montreal, do not go where people catch another flight. Priscilla Roberti, senior agent for Piedmont in Burlington, said the agreement between Piedmont and Brockway will mean a larger company and more room for advancement or relocation. "It should be wonderful for us, it is great job security," she said.

Piedmont will probably be hiring more staff in Burlington in May, she said. Brockway will make cutbacks because some of their stations will be operated by Piedmont. Approximately 60 Brockway workers will lose their jobs, Fraser said. Although some may lament the disappearance of the independent commuter airline, Stephen, of the Regional Airline Association, said, not all will vanish. "There will (still) be independent regional airlines but they will be in specialty markets." it will coordinate its schedule to meet Piedmont Airline's flights.

In addition, the majority of Brock- muter, passengers will get 500 miles credit on the Piedmont Frequent Flyers program, said Andrew Price, vice president of marketing and planning for Brockway. In addition, if the larger airline gets in a fare war the commuter airline may cut fares too, said Perry Flint, associate editor of Commuter Regional Airline News. As more airlines share airport stations, passengers can expect shorter walks at city terminals. "Where you come in will be where you go out," Merrihew said.

With joint marketing agreements ensuring service to small towns, residents of communities the size of Burlington have the most to gain. Since deregulation, major airlines have pulled out of about 300 communities, Stephen said. At the Burlington airport, all the regional airlines with the exception of Pilgrim Airlines have, or are considering, joint marketing agreements. Ransome Airlines has been one of Delta's four Delta Connection airlines for 2Vj years. Springfield-based Precision Airlines has a joint marketing agreement with Eastern which takes effect May 1.

The new breed of lap-top computers are getting smaller, lighter and more powerful. The Kaypro 2000, which costs about $2,000. comes standard with 256K, a built-in disk drive, full 80-by-24-line screen and tons of software.

The Data General One costs $2,500, has a full-sized LCD screen and a built-in disk drive. The Zenith Z-171 has TWO disk drives and a full-sized screen that's the easiest portable screen to read around The Quadram Datavue 25 has an infrared keyboard (no cable attaching the keyboard to the computer). All of these are IBM compatible and will let you do almost as much as you could with a desktop computer.
