Happenings People notebook Births From Here," the magazine's first personal column, in 1964. In 1969, he was named Life's assistant managing editor and held that position until the weekly ceased publication at the end of 1972. Wainwright rejoined the writing staff for Life's revival as a monthly in 1978. In 1986, Knopf published Wain-wright's "The Great American Magazine," which tells the history of Life from an insider's viewpoint. Bill Nichols WASHINGTON (AP) Rep.

Bill Nichols, a staunch Pentagon supporter who became a leader in efforts to reform the nation's military establishment, died Tuesday of a heart attack. He was 70. Nichols used his chairmanship of the House Armed Services investigations subcommittee to keep a close watch over Pentagon spending. After widely publicized hearings into such questionable expendutures as $400 Navy hammers and $5,000 Air Force coffee pots, he succeeded in amending a military spending bill to require the Defense Department to report to Congress on procurement reforms and to prohibit defense contractors from billing the government for expenses such as country club dues and lobbying costs. Nichols also headed the congressional investigation into the 1983 bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon which killed 241 Americans.

That investigation uncovered problems in the military chain of command which prompted Nichols to push for a reorganization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Deaths elsewhere Anthony Provenzano LOMPOC, Calif. (AP) Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano, 71, an imprisoned New Jersey mob chief and prime suspect in the disappearance of ex-Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, died Monday of a heart attack. Provenzano was installed shop steward in a trucking company in 1945, and by 1950 he was a Teamster organizer and eventually became president of Local 560. New Jersey State Police listed him as a soldier in the Genovese crime family who was a close associate of Hoffa in the early 1960s.

In July 1975, Hoffa disappeared while on his way to a Detroit, meeting with Provenzano, who was then president of Teamsters Local 560 in New Jersey. Hoffa is presumed dead, but his body was never found. The three Provenzano brothers, Anthony, Salvatore and Nunzio, all have been imprisoned for a variety of crimes, including racketeering and extortion. Loudon Wainwright NEW YORK (AP) Loudon Snowden Wainwright, a journalist who wrote Life magazine's "The View From Here" column and chronicled the magazine's history in a 1986 book, died Monday of cancer at age 63.
