9 Statesman-Journal, Salem, Saturday, August 29, 1 987, 3F tin era Mffi' MUM ifsn jwm State Fair handicap By Steve Carp For Saturday, Aug. 29 Fifth of 14 days Post time: 1 p.m. ROYALS 9, WHITE SOX 3 at Chicago Danny Tartabull homered in the first inning for his league-leading 15th game-winning RBI. Charlie Leibrandt, 13-9, struck out six and walked two. He retired 11 batters in a row at one point but ended up allowing 10 hits.

The victory was Kansas City's third straight, the past two under interim manager John Wathan. ORIOLES 6, ANGELS 5 at Baltimore Fred Lynn, who did not start because of a thigh injury, hit a pinch-hit home run to end the game with one out in the ninth inning. Lynn, the first batter after an 18-mi-nute rain delay, hit his 21st homer on a 3-1 pitch from Chuck Finley, 2-6, who had pitched 5Vi scoreless innings of relief. Finley had pitched 17 shutout innings against the Orioles in his career before Lynn's homer. Baltimore had taken a 5-0 lead off California starter Mike Witt after three innings but lost it all in the fifth and sixth.

Tha Atsociatod Pros Greg Brock drove in the only run with a double Friday night as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated Minnesota 1-0 and knocked the Twins out of first place in the American League West. Milwaukee's Chris Bosio pitched a two-hitter for his first victory in a month. Greg Gagne's single inHhe first and Kent Hrbek's single in the seventh were the only hits allowed by Bosio, and both runners were erased by double plays. Minnesota starter Les Straker, 6-9, had shut out the Brewers on three hits through five innings. But in the sixth Milwaukee's Robin Yount singled, attempted to steal second and wound up on third when the throw went wide and into center field.

Brock followed with a double to the wall in right center. "In the back of my mind I had no ideas about shutting them out, I just wanted to keep us close," Bosio said. "I just didn't want to give up the long ball. I needed this." seman Dave Bergman and scored on Sierra's 27th home run, which came off Tigers ace Jack Morris. Pete Incaviglia followed with a single and scored on a double by Pete O'Brien, who then scored on a single by Larry Parrish.

Dale Mohorcic pitched two hitless innings for his 16th save. The Tigers held onto the AL East lead despite the loss. MARINERS 10, YANKEES 4 at New York Alvin Davis hit a grand slam, and Mickey Brantley also drove in four runs in a game that started 2lA hours late because of rain. Davis hit his fourth career grand slam in the sixth inning against reliever Charles Hudson, breaking a 3-3 tie. Brantley, who had a two-run double in the fourth, homered in the seventh off Hudson, 9-4, and added an RBI single in the eighth.

The loss came on Yankees' manager Lou Piniella's 44th birthday and on a night when AL East co-leaders Detroit and Toronto each lost, leaving New York 4Va games behind. American League Brewers' manager Tom Trebelhorn said Bosio's pitching performance was "the kind of game you don't see that often. It was a 2:09 game, and he got by with less than 100 pitches. He was very composed and in charge." Bosio's victory came on a day when his attorney entered an innocent plea on an assault and battery charge against the pitcher. The charge stemmed from a July 19 incident in which a parking lot attendant said Bosio punched him in the nose after the pitcher refused to pay to park.

Bosio also has been threatened with a $200,000 lawsuit over the incident. RANGERS 5, TIGERS 3 at Detroit Ruben Sierra's two-run home run sparked a four-run Texas rally in the eighth inning. The Rangers trailed 3-1 before Od-dibe McDowell, leading off the eighth, reached on an error by Detroit first ba idratt now nMb tame nan list! 1st Nothing in this maiden opener stands out. However, Ivory Illusion showed potential at Portland Meadows in February, missing by a length. D.J.'t Way comes off two thirds at Ferndale.

She'll be a factor if she gets in. Wing Day was third here last Friday and stretches out today. 2nd Hold Your Place seems well spotted here. She has speed, draws inside and has drilled smartly for her return. Rightful Contender also has been away awhile, but fits nicely with these.

Alotof Daisies is an Assiniboia Downs shipper and must be respected. 3rd I Juana Chance failed miserably at 5-2 here last time out. As the name says, another chance. Ima Easy Girl draws the rail. Road Test is a first-time starter.

You never know. 4th After a solid effort at Exhibition Park in Vancouver, Midnight Review should earn his diploma today. A solid third in his only outing, the additon of Knapp in the saddle and decent works make him the one to beat. Flashy Review, out of the same sire as the top choice (Desert Review), has prepped smartly for his bow. Keep an eye on him.

Gray Jitano has picked up a check in both of last two starts. The same could be expected today. 5th After running at 400 and 600 yards, Tiny Drummer shortens up to 220 today. His speed should get him to the wire first in this quarterhorse event. Sapps Folly, a first-time starter, has good works under his belt.

Devil Echo needed a race. He could pop today. 6th After chasing Jill Brown last week and just missing by a nose, Hellwlgs Easter is the one to catch in this maiden event. Proud Seabird finished 5 lengths back to these two last week. Could make amends today.

Le Mira ships in from Longacres, where she ran in $10,000 company. 7th At $5,000, Oui's Best might have been in over his head. He drops to $3,200 today, perhaps a more comfortable level. Now This also slides down the claiming ladder, as does Joker Joe. 8th Promised Lark was much the best last week.

Right back, despite the rise to $4,000 claimers. Surg Go ran out of gas against $5,000 platers. He drops and could be dangerous off that drop. Mima's Pride ships in from a nice score at Harbor Park, coming off the pace to win by a half-length. 9th Saltwater Sally leaves the allowance ranks at Boise to compete here in $5,000 claimers.

Picking up Knapp doesn't hurt her either. La Bolsillo ran well here at a mile, finishing second after being the early speed. Going six panels should help her cause. Gamble Bay Time is a router shortening up. Her in lifetime earnings makes her a factor.

10th A Salem veteran, Doll's Mark, has run and won with these. Always Something returns to Oregon after a disappointing try on the California Fair circuit. Sweethonkeytonkwlne hopefully won't take as long to get to the finish line as her name is to spell. 11th Winning like a champ at Ferndale and boasting plenty of speed, Heza David should go wire-to-window in this starter allowance. First Pro has the speed to press the top one, and should grab a piece of the purse.

NatlOIial "I had no idea that was the case Jj6EgU6 until they put it on the board," said Schmidt, who went past Ted Williams and Willie McCovey and into ninth place on the career homer list. "These milestones don't have a lot of luster for me now. Someday they will, but not now." His 27th homer of the season came on an 0-1 Ed Whitson palmball.

"That was not a good pitch to throw me," Schmidt said. "I'm a pretty good off-speed hitter. The ball was right there and bingo." It also was Schmidt's 483rd homer as a third baseman, setting a National League record. He had been tied with Eddie Matthews. Matthews hit four homers in the American League and holds the major league record.

Don Carman, 8-9, struck out four and walked one in earning his second complete-game win, both over the Padres. METS 4, GIANTS at San Francisco Dwight Gooden pitched a four-hitter for his 15th major league shutout, and Howard Johnson hit his 32nd home run for New York. The Mets had only two hits in seven innings off Mike LaCoss, 11-8, who had retired 14 consecutive batters before Johnson led off the sixth inning with his homer into the upper deck in right field. The homer also ended a streak of 20 straight shutout innings by San Francisco pitchers. Gooden, 12-4 with a 2.86 earned run average, struck out six and walked four for his second shutout and fourth com- AP photo ning run in the ninth inning in the Cardinals' 4-3 victory Friday night.

St. Louis' Ozzie Smith (left) reaches around Atlanta catcher Ozzie Virgil to score the win- Scoreboard plete game of the year. He has a 51-10 record in night games. New York ended a four-game winning streak by the Giants, who still lead the National League West. CUBS 6, REDS 5 at Cincinnati Ryne Sandberg's single with two outs in the 10th inning scored Bob Dernier from second base and sent Cincinnati to its seventh straight loss.

Dernier singled to right and stole second. After Manny Trillo walked, Sandberg singled to right off of John Franco, 7-5. "I've had some luck hitting against him," said Dernier. "I see the ball well. It seems like even when I hit the ball bad it falls in for a hit." PIRATES 4, ASTROS 2 at Pitts burgh Bob Walk pitched a seven-hitter for Wa innings to outduel Mike Scott and hit an seventh-inning RBI single to score the go-ahead run.

Walk, 6-2, pitched the Pirates to their fourth straight victory. With the score 1-1, Mike LaValliere and Al Pedrique opened the Pirates' seventh with consecutive singles to center. With the first and third basemen charging the plate expecting a bunt, Walk bounced an RBI single up the middle, scoring LaValliere. EXPOS 2, DODGERS 1 at Los Angeles Mike Fitzgerald's 12th-in-ning, two-out single scored Tom Foley from second base to beat the Dodgers. Foley, whose fielding error in the eighth inning helped Los Angeles tie the score, hit a grounder with two outs to third baseman Tracy Woodson, whose throw sailed past first base.

Tim Leary, 3-10, then intentionally walked Herm Winningham before Fitzgerald lined his game-winning hit to right field. CARDINALS 4, BRAVES 3 at St. Louis Tommy Herr hit a pinch single with two outs in the ninth inning, scoring Ozzie Smith and lifting St. Louis to its third straight victory. Smith walked with one out and stole second.

After Terry Pendleton struck out and Jack Clark was intentionally walked, Herr, hitting for Todd Worrell, singled to shallow left. Left fielder Ken Griffey's throw arrived at the same time as the runner, but Smith's rolling block slide kept catcher Ozzie Virgil from fielding it. Maasburg walked with one out, stole second and advanced to third when shortstop Ramon Martinez couldn't hang on to the throw from catcher Edgar Rodriguez. Maasburg came home on Jim Ayl-ward's groundout. Erb, who was making his last start of the season, give up three hits and one earned run in seven innings. He struck out 11 and walked two. "It was my last game of the season, and I wanted to end on a good note," said Erb, a 6-4 righthander from San Diego.

"But after the season is over I will have two weeks off before I report to the Instructional League. I'm going to surf my brains out for two weeks." The first came in the bottom of the sixth inning with Wiley Lee at bat. Lee fouled off a pitch that broke one of the lights behind the Bucks' dugout. The glass fragments fell down on top of reserve Dwayne Smith, who suffered cuts on his forehead and the back of his head. He was taken to Salem Hospital, where he needed a couple of stitches.

Salem reliever Eric Reinholtz avoided another possible mishap in the seventh inning when Troy Zerb lost the handle on his bat. After a swing and a miss, Zerb's bat came right back at Reinholtz, who was able to step out the way. Hansen, 4-6, has had some tough luck this year, losing 1-0 and 3-2, but he controlled his own fate Friday night. The Angels managed just six hits off the 6-foot-4 lefthander from Idaho Falls, Idaho. He struck out 10 and walked one.

"I knew I had to pitch well, because he (Erb) doesn't belong in this league the way he was pitching," Hansen said. "I tried to keep the guys before the three and four hitters off base, so if they hit one out, it's only one run." Erb, 6-3, was just as impressive, even though he didn't have the fortune Hansen had. Bend scored the only run it needed in the top of the first. A two-out walk to Tony Trevino was followed by Gary Maasburg's RBI double. By Steve Yingling Of the) Statesman-Journal The Salem Angels-Bend Phillies encounter Friday night at Chemeketa Field wasn't your typical Northwest League baseball game.

Bend won 5-0 behind the six-hit pitching of Todd Hansen. But that was about the only normal thing that happened. First of all, the game only took 2 hours, 19 minutes, a much-quicker game than the usual NWL affairs. Secondly, Salem starter Mike Erb pitched a one hitter through five innings, yet found himself behind 2-0. In addition, a couple of freak plays occurred, injuring one player and nearly another.

After a successful opening weekend at Lone Oak Park that saw a $62,000 increase in the handle, Friday's crowd of 4,200 bet $200,838.

"I think some of tonight's success can be attributed to last weekend," Walt Gates, director of racing said. "I think we're on our way to a big meet." In Friday's feature, a $5,000 claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs, Vicschap came from off the pace, overtook Helen Spitfire in midstretch and went on to win by a length. Vicschamp, ridden to victory by Richard Sanchez in 1:15.4, stalked Helen Spitfire, the early pacesetter. The two ran as a pair around the final turn, but Sanchez, on the outside, used his whip and Vicschamp responded. Vicschamp returned $6.20, $3.40 and $2.20 to his backers.

The 2-3 quinella returned $17.80 and the 3-2-1 trifecta paid $48. Jockeys Bruno Maelfeyt and John Kester each rode two winners. Kester won the second and third races and Maelfeyt took the fourth and fifth. In the fifth, Maelfeyt withstood a claim of foul from Kester in an Appaloosa claiming event. Maelfeyt and Petty Talk stayed on top and paid $3.40 to win.

The quinella with Rome Ella paid a season-low $4 while the 5-4-1 trifecta returned just $11.60.
