Though Billings and Sutherland have only performed as a duo for about a year and a half, they have sung and played together since meeting in 1972. "I heard this beautiful sound," Billings recalled. "I followed it and found Pete playing hammer dulcimer." Billings began sitting in with the Arm and Hammer String Band, of which Sutherland was a founder. The band exposed many Vermont listeners to Southernstyle Appalachian music for the first time, and proved to be extremely popular. "The time spent with Arm and Hammer was a great experience," Billings said.

"I had to learn the give and take which never entered into a solo act." That interaction remains apparent. On stage, the two listen to each other and anticipate, without overshadowing each other. They do what is necessary to allow their own self-expression to appear while maintaining a respect for tradition. "We're not purists," Billings said. "Music can only live if it means something now, and for us that means choosing material we love and interpreting it in our own style.

We're like a string band without the band because we play more than a dozen instruments between us." "Neither of us likes to sing in smoky bars," Sutherland said, "because it hurts our voices. We do enjoy the Welcome Table atmosphere and were inspired to write lots of new songs for this show. We like to perform at places that feel like home. The reality of that is we can't make a living performing. It's a far cry from the glory days around the bicentennial when jobs were plentiful.

"We're not giving up though. There are ways to make do. It's not unusual to trade fiddle lessons and yarn for fresh eggs, milk and meat." "For a while I felt I had withdrawn too much into music and that I didn't do anything else," Billings said. "Now I'm choosing to pursue music despite the fact that there are other things I could do. I'm finally realizing the foolishness of avoiding what makes me feel most alive." In addition to playing, both Billings and Sutherland like contra and square dancing.

They have called dances around the state and it is what they are best known for, even though they feel it is the least of their talents. And what are their long range goals? "We're really juggling three careers: Karen's, mine and the duo," Sutherland said. "I imagine we'll always do music together, but also keep things fluid enough to follow our individual opportunities." The Welcome Table is in the College Street Congregational Church at the corner of College and South Union streets in Bur- lington. Tonight's show begins at 8. Admission is $2.50, $2 for senior citizens.
