"Life is getting more complicated these days," said Maerki. "While everyone seems to be seeking simple answers to things, the hard fact is that there aren't many simple answers around. "For that reason, our goal is to gather all the facts that are available and then to present them in a way that is both i i at Ik lnilVi" ov Corw i Jt I '1-'-.

Maerki, a veteran newsman who spent 16 years as a reporter and political columnist for The Burlington Free Press and who still writes his weekly column for The Free Press, said: "A long time ago, Walter Lippmann examined the proposition that news was meant to serve as a vehicle for communicating the truth. "Lippmann reached a pessimistic conclusion," said Maerki.

"He said: 'If we assume that news and truth are two words for the same thing, we shall, I believe, arrive Maerki said that Lippmann went on to say the function of news is "to signalize an event," whereas the function of truth is "to bring to light the hidden facts, to set them into relation with each other, and make a picture of reality on which men can act." The TV-22 newsman said: "We are more optimistic at TV-22 News. We are going to try to bring to our viewers each day all the news and all the facts we can uncover. "And, we are going to try to present that news and those facts in the form of a 'picture of reality on which men can act." "In short," said Maerki, "we are going to try to get at the truth of the news." He said TV-22 News will present more depth than is usually found in television newscasts and will use less of the "frills" that are often the regular fare on TV newscasts. The 6 p.m. TV-22 newscast, anchored by Maerki, presents regular commentary by professionals who "have something to contribute in the search for the meaning of the news." At present, five University of Vermont faculty members present the daily commentary during a section of the 6 p.m.

newscast entitled "Viewpoint." Maerki said the number of "Viewpoint" commentators may eventually be expanded to 10. Maerki presents his own comments on "Closeup," which follows the 11 p.m. newscast, which is anchored by TV-2) Night News Editor Brian Harwood. "Viewpoint" and "Closeup" are presented by the TV22 News Department. Maerki said when the management of the station takes editorial positions on matters, the editorials will be clearly labeled as such and will represent the views of the station ownership, just as a newspaper editorial represents the views of the publisher.

Maerki said "all of the efforts of TV22 News will be designed to serve the public." "We will not be the servant of government or of any other establishment or institution," he said. "We will have no sacred cows. "An English journalist once said that the role of a good newspaper should be to afflict the comfortable and to comfort i the afflicted. "That sounds like a good goal for any newspaper or for any television news department." Hp luxe Metropolitan 6707, $28.50. 3.

Many of the developments that' don't appear on the early evening newscasts or in the afternoon papers have not yet happened. Conversely, the morning newspaper frequently contains items which have occured the previous evening between 7 and midnight. For Night News Editor Brian Harwood, the evening is spent tracking down and preparing these stories for the 11 p.m. newscast.

Harwood points out that the international time rones often mean a daytime story, such as the invasion of Czechoslovakia, comes during the evening in America.
