Musgrave directed the Ducks on a 16-play, 80-yard touchdown drive the first time he had his hands on the ball, peppering the Buffaloes' experienced secondary with four completions for 43 yards and two drive-sustaining third-down completions. But the frequent flights did little to help the Beavers as Georgia easily handled OSU 41-7 before 73,211 fans Saturday at Sanford Stadium. Oregon State quarterback Erik Wilhelm passed 53 times for 353 yards and one touchdown, while the Beavers gained a net total of 18 rushing yards. In contrast, Georgia rushed for five touchdowns. Tailback Lars Tate led the Bulldogs with 133 yards on 22 carries. He also scored four touchdowns.

In all, Georgia rushed for 364 yards. Coach Vince Dooley, though pleased with the victory, displayed his usual caution in assessing his team. "I felt we played fairly well offensively and defensively," he said. "We seemed to be sharper today and played with a lot more enthusiasm. "However, let's not forget that Oregon State is not in the same league as the team we'll face next weekend.

We'll find out a lot about our team next week at Clemson." Dooley was pleased with his team's pass defense, despite Wil-helm's 353 yards. OSU coach Dave Kragthorpe said, "I think Georgia was very cognizant of not getting beat deep, and therefore we were able to complete a lot of passes underneath their coverage." As for his own team, Kragthorpe said: "We didn't play well, certainly not as good as we expected. Our defense did not tackle very well today. I thought we would tackle much better than we did." Georgia used six plays to drive 68 yards on its first possession. Tate took the ball in from 26 yards, and Georgia led 7-0.

But OSU used five plays to go 83 yards to the end zone, when Wilhelm lofted a 22-yard pass to flanker Robb Thomas. But any chances of a close game ended with that score. The Bulldogs got another first-quarter TD run from Tate, and their defense put Oregon State's passing game out of gear. c. jf 's AP photo Oregon State chased Georgia's Lars Tate (32) all day, allowing him to rush for 132 yards and four touchdowns.

We were embarrassed by Seattle last year, and I don't think our players have forgotten it." Seattle has a few new faces this season, including linebacker Brian Bos-worth, who will start in place of injured Keith Butler. Also, Melvin Jenkins has replaced the traded Dave Brown at cornerback.

Dave Krieg, trying to shake his reputation as an erratic performer, is the quarterback, with Curt Warner and John L. Williams providing a solid ground game. Steve Largent has an NFL-record 139-game receiving streak. Denver will have seven new starters. John Elway enters his fifth season at quarterback, and the addition of top draft pick Ricky Nattiel gives him another deep threat.

From wlr report DENVER The Seattle Seahawks sizzled at the end of the 1986 season, winning their final five games, and have been touted to reach the Super Bowl. That puts coach Chuck Knox on the spot, a position he doesn't find comfortable. "We were 10-6 last year and didn't even make the playoffs," he said. "I think those people are overestimating our ability. "This is a new season.

What we did last year has absolutely no bearing on this year. Momentum is not a tangible. It's like trying to grab at air." Today's opener against the Denver Broncos should provide a clue as to whether or not Knox is sending up a smoke screen. The Broncos, after all, lost to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXI. Denver coach Dan Reeves is excited about the opener.

"It's close," she said. "It depends on whether you go for quantity or quality. She's got great quantity, and I have great quality. I like my year, let's put it that way." It was the third Grand Slam final this year between Graf and Navratilova, who were seeded first and second at the Open. Graf won the French Open.
