B.Us Terriers Dominate Cats in 29-6 Win I 8 5 Seven plays after the kickoff UVM was stopped at the BU 46 and Looker kicked into the end zone. BU took over on the 20 and with machine-like precision marched to its second score with fullback Joe Driscoll going the final yard. In the drive Murphy lugged the ball six times, consistently picking up seven, eight, and nine yards. Terry Zirtidis kicked his second point after and at the half UVM trailed, 14-0 as the BU defenders consistently knocked Bateman for losses and the UVM offense sputtered. A 65-yard Looker when he got a UVM bounce put BU back on its 10-yard line but this BU attempted drive was eventually halted.

After a delay of game penalty on the third period kickoff set BU back five yards, UVM took over on its 41. Three plays later comerback Rick Porter picked off a Bateman aerial intended for Looker and rambled the remaining 35 yards for the six pointer and Roger Strandberg ran in for the two points to make it 22-0. The final BU score came at 11:58 of the final reel when Katapodis burst through the UVM line and streaked for 52 yards untouched into the end zone. UVM's Reed blocked a Sirtidis punt on the BU 19 and Snodgrass recovered the loose ball in the end zone for the score to make it 22-6 at the time. UVM managed to get some big yardage on BU penalties, but still were unable to move the ball well enough to get in scoring range.

NOTES: BU kickoff specialist and second line free safety, Jackie Robinson, was injured in the second half and left the field on crutches. Defensively for BU Rick Holway, Dane Hume, Dave Laroche, Gary Dziama, Dom Lalli, Jim Carroll, and Kevin Graham were outstanding, keeping pressure on the UVM offense and making numerous tackles. In the first half Katapodis had 22 yards on eight carries while Thompson had 15 yards on four carries for UVM with Blood gaining 12 yards on two carries. A short time later, after Fred Foumier recovered a BU fumble the Cats drove to the one-yard line, only to be stopped on fourth and goal.

BU then took command and marched Wh yards mostly on the ground to its first score. That TD came three seconds into the second period and later in the period, BU marched 80 yards in nine plays for its second score. UVM's only TD came in the final reel when Joe Reed blocked a BU punt and Duke Snodgrass recovered the ball in the end zone. As an omen of things to come, a Bateman pass to Sam Blood was dropped on the two point conversion. UVM's hopes for a win were deflated on the first interception, one of three Bateman threw, and the failure to score from the half yard line completely deflated the balloon.

The other turning point came when Bateman, scrambling after being caught in his backfield, ran the ball to the eight-yard line, only to have it called back on a clip supposedly thrown by Looker. It was a bad call and it proved costly since Looker threw one of the cleanest and prettiest blocks of the day. Not only did UVM have a chance to score and tie it at 7-7, it 7 By DON FILLION Losing an athletic contest is one thing. Getting a sound physical beating and losing is another. And, that's exactly what happened to the University of Vermont football team Saturday afternoon at UVM's Centennial Field against Boston University.

The Terriers, coming off a 28-0 loss to UNH and wanting revenge for a 15-0 loss to the Catamounts last season, soundly defeated the Cats, 29-6, in a game which BU dominated in almost every phase of the game. About the only thing the small crowd of 3,900 fans could boast about was the kicking of senior Billy Looker and the run back of kickoffs by sophomore Larry Lockwood. Outside of that the Terriers took the game to the Cats both offensively and defensively and left little doubt after the first half what the outcome was going to be. The win gives BU a 2-1 Yankee Conference and overall record while UVM is 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference and with the loss most hopes of a high finish were dimmed. "They just handled us," said a realistic UVM coach Carl Falivene.

"Last Saturday at UConn we lost. week we got beat both ways. We just could not handle them physically. They took the was tagged with a 15-yard penalty. Bateman had his worst day of the young season, hitting on seven of 21 passes for 85 yards and no scores.

Prior to the game he led Division II of the ECAC in total yardage. UVM had only 10 first downs, four coming on BU penalties, which totaled 138 yards. "I still can't believe that 99-yard drive," said a disappointed Falivene. "BU did exactly what I said they would and I said if we couldn't handle them on the line of scrimmage, it would be a long day. it was." Lockwood returned the opening kickoff for UVM to the BU 45, nearly breaking away.

UVM marched to the 33, but Bateman's pass intended for Looker was intercepted in the end zone by Safety Al Ramos. Murphy fumbled on the UVM 47 and Foumier recovered on the next series. Two Bateman-to-Blood passes ate up good yardage and the Cats had first and goal on the BU nine. Rocky Thompson went to the five and three shots by Mike McAllister, the last, was stopped on the half-yard line. With Murphy carrying seven times, BU drove to the two-yard line and fullback George Katapodis busted in from two yards out.

line of scrimmage away from us and if you can't do anything on the line of scrimmage you cannot win. You saw it, we never got anything going," said Falivene. It makes one wonder what the final score will be when UVM takes on Massachusetts Saturday at Amherst, Mass. The Minutemen defeated Maine, 42-0, and Dartmouth last weekend, 144). The Cats were inept both ways.

junior quarterback Bob Bateman's inability to move the Catamounts can be excused. He never had a chance to set up with the Terrier defense laying its ears back and coming on like gang busters. There were some turning points, if they can be called that, but BU ran up a total of 424 yards, 351 on the ground, while UVM managed a total of 142 yards, 57 on the ground. The key figure was sophomore tailback Glen Murphy, a transfer from Ohio State who spent the biggest part of the afternoon ripping off huge chunks of Centennial Field real estate. All Murphy did was lug the leather 203 yards on 36 carries, 171 yards in the first half on 24 lugs.

He tore through the UVM defense at will as the huge line pushed the UVM defenders backwards on command. The turning point may have been when UVM was moving the ball consistently on the ground vl' rfr i i fll Tin fii i i BU'S RICK PORTER (22) steps in front of UVM's Billy Looker for an interception. The Dragon Chevelle puffed some smoke out of the tailpipe and was quickly pitted for repairs.

A blown gasket was the problem and after some hurried work, it was repaired and he was ready to go in the qualifying heats. Apparently the repairs were made to perfection because once the 200 lap event started, it was obvious the Milton native was the driver to beat. Starting 17th in the 29-car field, Dragon was out in front of the pack by the 23rd lap and never looked back, even though the event was halted after 38 laps because of heavy showers. It took and hour and a half of rain before attempts could be made to dry out the track and that took another hour. Once the green flag was dropped Dragon was challenged only briefly and then put plenty of distance between himself, the field and runnerup Dave Dion, who ran an excellent race.

Dragon was the only driver who completed the 200 laps, with numerous laps run under yellow. i I I tj tr 3-Cycle Dryer Automatic sensor shuts dryer off when clothes are dry Automatic normal, Auto-Permanent Press or 60 min. dry cycles 3 temp, selections Up front lint filter easy to see, easy to clean 179 95 Up front controls High impact polystyrene cabinet Built-in molded handle Solid slate UHF tuner Built-in VHF and UHF antennas 81 95 Fits where fully automatic equipment never would before 5 pound wash and dry capacity Washer has 3 water temperatures wash and 2 rinse iiaui NUVV 1 Dragon lapped the entire field at least once. Beaver Dragon finished third while Jean Paul Cabana clinched the Catamount championship by finishing fourth. Joey Kourafas, who was trying to make up 30 points on Cabana and hopefully take the final track championship of the year, never finished the race.

He spun out on the second turn on the 61st lap and was tagged hard by Bob Giroux, driving Cabana's backup car. That smashup put both drivers on the sidelines with extensive damage. Little John Rosati of Agawam, finished fifth followed by Andre Manny, Robbie Crouch, Ron Marvin, and Bob Healy. Hector LeClair, who ran a brillant race and was fighting for the third spot, was blackflagged late in the race when his right front tire went flat. He, Beaver Dragon, and Rosati diced for third place well over 100 laps.

For his efforts LeClair was named the winner of The Howard Bank award. A total of 48 laps were run under caution flags, 15 after the restart after the long rain to help dry out the track. The attrition rate was fairly high with only 18 of the 29 cars finishing. Haverhill, N.H. driver, Stub Fadden finished 10th, Qt.

LeClair 11th and Steve Poulin of North Troy came home 12th. There were four different leaders until the 23rd lap when Dragon took over for good. Jack Anderson led until the 10th lap when Manny took over and led for four. On the 15th lap LeClair busted into the lead and held it until the 21st lap when the caution flag was thrown again. LeClair, dragging some sheet metal behind the car, had been blackflagged and ducked into the pits on the 22nd lap, and Manny regained the lead.

Two laps later Dragon blew by Manny and was home free. Buv 'A Burlington St. Albans W. Montpelier St. Johnsbury mm mmrm Z.
