SE, Salem. Activities of the group are explained at 7 p.m. PHILADELPHIA, Miss. (AP) The owner of the town's only theater said Sunday she won't show the film Mississippi Burning, a fictionalized account of the deaths 25 years ago of three civil rights workers here. "We're not going to show it.

No way. It's not worth it," Lula Ellis, who owns the Ellis theater, said. "It's just a mess." Ellis had said that church groups were threatening to boycott the theater if it showed the movie. On June 21, 1964, three civil rights workers James Earl Chaney, 21, who was black, and Andrew Goodman, 20, and Mi chael Schwerner, 24, who were both white disappeared after they were released from jail in Philadelphia. They had been stopped on speeding charges after they had been investigating the burning of a church by the Ku Klux Klan.

The three men were found 44 days later, shot to death and buried in a soggy earthen dam in Neshoba County. The movie has refocused national attention on this town of 6,800 people, which is 70 miles northwest of Jackson. The film has been released in five cities and is scheduled for nationwide release Friday. Continued from Page 1B. greed to his floundering desperation at the loss of his gold, Rabold is never off the mark.

Rabold is the fulcrum of this show, but Bigelow has mustered a cast with the flawless ensemble feel expected from an Oregon Shakespearean Festival presentation. The acting ranges from Robert Machray's bumptuous valet to Jane Jones as Harpagon's daughter, Elise, an infectiously funny Valley Girl. Demetra Pittman, Nick Corley and Louis Lotorto also are excellent. Moliere's play, steeped in a cynical realism that seems appropriate today, is the story of a widower who loves money for money's sake. Harpagon is preparing to wed his daughter, Elise, to a wealthy old merchant and his son, Cleante, to a wealthy widow.

Harpagon wants to marry young Mariane, who actually is in love with Cleante. Elise loves Harpagon's servant, Valere. The complicated plot illuminates the absurdities of Harpagon as it resolves the problems by giving everyone what they most want, from money to love. Bigelow's imaginative staging features touches from the 17th century through the present. It is inventive but sometimes overdone, especially in the tiresome phallic references.

But this is an exuberant, thoughtful entertainment, from Carey Wong's lavish setting of an airy classical rotunda to David Mickelson's lively costumes, which turn history into pop art. The Miser, by Moliere, translated by Sara O'Connor, directed by Dennis Bigelow, designed by Carey Wong, costumes by David Mickelson, lights by Rick Paulsen.
