Page6D SPORTS Statesman Journal, Salem, Wednesday, July 5, 1989 atom's baits Royals beat A's aire sftaoggfag Gary Forrester for the final 1 innings. Forrester was a crowd favorite after he struck out two of the three batters he faced in the eighth to get Salem out of the inning. "It was fun," Forrester said. "I had asked if the situation ever presented itself if I could help out. But I shouldn't have thrown the curve to that one guy." Forrester was referring to Dave Staton, who homered off him with one out in the ninth.

Beyers said: "He looked like he knew what he was doing. I appreciate him coming in. I don't like to do it, but I don't want to waste my pitchers in a game like that." Beyers put an infielder on the mound one other time this season, against Boise on June 27, when Dan Stupur threw for one inning in the Dodgers' 15-6 loss. Salem's Garrett Beard, who leads the league in RBI with 25, has eight more than second-place Kevin Higgins of Spokane, who drove in his first run of the series Tuesday. Beard, who has picked up three RBI against the Indians, had a five-game hitting streak ended Tuesday when he went 0 for 2.

By Capi Lynn The Statesman Journal Spokane's pitching staff has stifled the Salem Dodgers the past four games, striking out a combined 41 batters en route to a 3-1 advantage in the five-game series. The Indians have done it with three pitchers who are among the top five in the Northwest League in strikeouts Rick Davis, the winner in game one; Eddie Zinter, game three's winner; and Kerry Knox, who won game four. The Dodgers, who entered the series with a league-best .293 team batting average, have hit .201 against the Indians. Salem's pitching staff has put up some impressive numbers of its own. Through Monday's game, three Dodger pitchers were among the league's top 10 in ERA Larry Gonzalez (0.59), Clayton Enno (0.60) and Ramon Taveras (1.06).

But Salem pitchers have combined to walk 108 batters this season, including 12 in Tuesday's 15-3 loss. That was the most walks given up by the Dodgers in a game. After Spokane chased three pitchers Tuesday, Salem manager Tom Beyers turned to shortstop Bo Jackson homered twice Tuesday to give him 20 home runs and 20 steals at the season's mid- way point as the Kansas American city Royais beat the Oak-LectUe land Athletics at Oak land, Calif. Bret Saberhagen (8-4) won his fifth consecutive decision, allowing five hits in seven innings and striking out a season-high 11. He has not lost since May 19 at Detroit, and the Royals are 13-4 in games he has started.

Matt Young (0-2) gave up four runs and five hits and walked five in three-plus innings. He was making his fourth start following elbow surgery. 1 Baltimore 8, at Toronto 0 Dave Schmidt flirted with perfection only to lose it. But he won his eighth game, matching last year's total. Schmidt retired the first 18 hitters, and with relief help from Mark William-Son and home runs from Cal Ripken and Craig Worthington, he led the Orioles to victory.

Schmidt (8-7) gave up two hits In 6V3 innings to avenge a three-inning, 12-hit beating at the hands of the Blue Jays in his last start. At New York 1, Detroit 0 On a day honoring one of the greatest hitters in their history, the New York Yankees paid tribute to the pitchers. I Don Schulze, promoted from the minors earlier in the day, went seven strong innings for his first major league Win since 1987, on the 50th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's farewell speech at Yankee Stadium. "I kept hoping my day would come, but you never know," Schulze said. He gave up six hits.

Yankees' manager Dallas Green said of Schulze: "To get that kind of performance out of him was special. It came at a time when we needed it. And we didn't give him much breathing room." At Cleveland 3, Chicago 2 Luis Aguayo hit his first home run of the season, and Scott Bailes won for the third time in four starts. Bailes (4-3) allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings, walking none and striking out two. Jesse Orosco pitched one inning, and Doug Jones got the last three outs for his 20th save in 23 opportunities.

Bailes held the White Sox scoreless on four hits until the seventh, when Carlton Fisk hit a two-out single, and Dan Pasqua followed with a two-run homer. Aguayo's two-run homer in the fifth was one of five hits in 61s innings against Melido Perez (5-10). Milwaukee 4, at Boston 3 Paul Molitor snapped a tie with a lead-off fiome run in the eighth inning. Chris Bosio (8-5) allowed seven hits in 7 innings, struck out eight and walked three. At Seattle 3, Minnesota 2 Scott Bankhead allowed three hits and one run in Vh innings to win his fifth consecutive decision.

Bankhead said: "I'm just making them swing the bats. If I throw my best stuff and they beat me, that's the way it goes." "We were out in front of it." Right-hander Dan Deville went the final three innings for the Indians to earn the save. Meanwhile, four Dodger pitchers combined to walk 12 batters the most Salem has given up in one game this season. Beyers, whose club is second in the league in walks, said: "We are walking a. lot, and that's causing a lot of pressure for ourselves. You can't go out and walk a team like this because they'll take advantage of it.

They're a good hitting team." That was the solace New York Mets' pitcher Bob Ojeda found Tuesday after the worst outing of his major league career. He allowed the Houston Astros eight runs, six hits and two walks all in two-thirds of an inning.

Houston and Mike Scott (14-4) cruised to a 10-3 win from there. Ojeda said: "It was a bad day. You guys never had a bad day? No other way to describe it. Just a bad day. I had a bad day." He was sitting on a wooden stool in front of his locker.

On the blue carpet at his feet were piles of ashes. Understand that Ojeda seldom smokes. But this was a Fourth of July when he was all lit up. Ojeda has been pitching in the major leagues since 1980. He has appeared in 227 games.

In none of the previous 226 did he permit as many runs as he did Tuesday. There was no warning sign for any of that in the bullpen, Ojeda who had few supporters when he put Abbott into the starting rotation before the season, said: "He has come a long way, both physically and emotionally. "He has made most of his progress after enduring bad times. That's one of the first things I noticed about him this spring, his resiliency." Abbott said: "I want to feel like I can hold the other team whenever they give me the ball. Everyone has his bad day." Abbott missed a start early last month because of tendonitis in his pitching shoulder but he is getting back in shape.

"I felt stronger tonight, even in the eighth inning," he said. "I've been doing some extra running. It takes a while to get back in gear after that layoff with my shoulder." Texas manager Bobby Valentine said: "He was impressive. He is a strong guy and throws a hard slider. We'll have to adjust to him the next time we face him." Abbott had no trouble with the Rangers, except for two jams he created himself.

After retiring the first eight men, he walked Jim Sundberg with two outs in the third. Singles by Sammy Sosa and Scott Fletcher brought home Sundberg. In the eighth, with Sosa on third following a one-out double and a grounder, Abbott balked him home. "Both runs were due in some part to my inexperience," Abbott said. "Those kinds of mistakes can't be tolerated every time out." Abbott pitched at the University of Michigan for three years and was the eighth player selected in the June 1988, draft.

Because he spent last summer as a member of the U.S. Olympic team, Abbott did not make his professional debut until this spring. comply with wage rate required ORS 279.350. must state whether is a "resident ORS 279.029. may withdraw 30 days after set for opening.

Jim Abbott set a major-league record and Immediately put it into perspec tive. The 21-year-eld left-hander beat the Texas Rangers, 5-2 Monday for his seventh victory, setting a record for major league victories by a first-year pro. Abbott (7-5) Jim Abbott bettered the record set in 1973 by Dick Ruthven, who was 6-9 for Philadelphia. Abbott is the 10th pitcher to begin his career in the majors since the amateur draft began in 1965. When informed of his record, Abbott said he was aware that Burt Hooton began his career with two victories for the 1971 Chicago Cubs, then went on to win 191 major league games.

"So I've got a long way to go," Abbott said with a chuckle. "This record is nice. We're in the middle of a pennant race. It's just nice being a contributing factor. It feels good to be on a team that feels it can win." Abbott's performance kept the Angels 1V4 games behind Oakland in the American League West.

"This is a pretty key series," Abbott said. "I thought about that, as well as the fact that I hadn't yet beaten a team from the West." He is 1-3 against his own division. Abbott's1 14 starts have come 'against 11 different teams. The only AL West 'foes he has yet to face are Minnesota and Chicago. On Monday, he held Texas to five hits in eight innings, struck out six, walked one and retired 13 of the last 15 batters he faced.

He lowered his ERA to 3.71.
