Cats Add Ice Tilts The University of Vermont hockey team, entering its first year in Division his added two more games to its 1974-75 schedule and now has scheduled 33 regular season games. It was learned last week that the Catamounts have accepted a bid to play in the Lennoxville, PQ, Tournament in Lennoxville the weekend of Nov.

16, the same weekend the University of Vermont football team plays at American International College. Vermont opens its season Oct 25 at Wisconsin, plays the same team Oct. 26 and the following weekend will play two games at St. Louis University. Teams scheduled to play in the Lennoxville tournament are Norwich University and Bishop's University.

The fourth team has not been announced. Following the Lennoxville tourney, UVM opens play in Division I against RPI at Troy, N.Y.,Nov.23. HANOVER, N.H. Saturday at 2:30 p.m. 56 of the finest high school football players of New Hampshire and Vermont will clash in the 21st annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl Game and a crowd of close to 18,000 is expected to jam Dartmouth's Memorial Field for what promises to be one of the finest games in the history of the summer classic.

The starting teams have been announced and 22 players will be starting offensively and defensively for each team with no one going both ways. The 28 players on each squad are so close in ability that the head coaches have delayed announcing their starting team and there is no doubt that every player will see plenty of action. New Hampshire is looking for its first victory in four years while Vermont hopes to continue its recent domination. The series now stands at 12-6-2 in favor of the Granite State. Shrine Coach Bob Underhill of Newport, has named Buddy Dowd of Portsmouth as the starting quarterback of New Hampshire.

Dowd can run and throw and is expected to spark the Granite State's attack which will see Pete Daigneault of Plymouth and Bob Dykeman of Newport at the halfback positions and Brooks MacNillan of Hanover at fullback. The Vermont offense will be guided by Jeff Houghton another scrambling signal caller. Houghton is the son of Head Shrine coach Dean Houghton of Poultney. He will direct the Vermont attack which will include Jim Kennison of Hartford, Gerry Myers of Winooski at right halfback, John Leary of Brattleboro at left half back and John Aher of Hartford at fullback. Both Shrine teams have co-captains who will be starting on defense.

Jim Vailas of Manchester Central has been given the nod at middle linebacker and Herbie DeGraffe of Portsmouth will start at safety and for Vermont Rich Congdon of Rutland will be a left tackle and John Galle of Rice at right guard. The two teams are almost even in the weight department with defensive lines averaging 205 pounds and offensive lines about 190. The two Shrine teams are scheduled to work out this afternoon on Memorial Field and will spend tonight at Kimball Union and Vermont Academy. One of those beatings was applied by the University of Vermont, 1S4, and except for the 35-15 loss to Temple, a powerhouse, it was the worst beating the Terriers received all season.

Boston University coach Paul Kemp, who has an extensive background in college football, to say the least, was mighty unhappy with the results of that first season in Beantown and he had made moves and did some recruiting that will definitely be a stepping stone to the future. UVM coach Carl Falivene, who along with all Yankee Conference head coaches, was at a Thursday press conference, said last year. "I can't understand why BU isn't winning. They have all kinds of talent and they hit us as hard as any team we played all season." Bill Bowes of UNH predicted Massachusetts would be the team to beat, but Larry Naviaux warned other Yankee Conference coaches to beware of the Terriers. Falivene agreed as did several other coaches.

Another coach predicted Connecticut, who shared the crown last year with the Rhode Island Rams, would be the team to beat and Naviaux said, as did, Dick MacPherson of Massachusetts that "We are going after it." (The conference The word is that Boston University spent in the vicinity of $105,000 in recruiting aid in the freshman class alone and Kemp said. "We spent more money in aid than any other coach ever did at Boston University. Don't let anyone tell you we are cutting back, because we are not. We are headed in the direction I want to go. I feel we have as good a shot at the championship as any team in the conference.

"We will bring back our defense intact and I feel we can play defense with any team in New England and the defensive secondary is intact." Bowes also mentioned UVM junior quarterback Bob Bateman and said. He could be the besg quarterback in the conference since Greg Landry." Certainly a nice thing to say about the young quarterback who passed for nearly 1.000 yards last year and yet had nearly 25 passes dropped. Boston University will be playing at Centennial Field Sept. 28 and one of the stars to watch for the Terriers will be Dave Lindstrom. a 6-6 227 pound defensive end, who Kemp predicts will repeat as an All-New England choice and will be a first round draft pick by the NFL.

Nickerson Field There is a bit of nostalgia about Boston University and the Case Sports Complex, which surrounds a portion of Nickerson Field, which at one time was better known as Braves Field. Having watched many games there when the Boston Braves were playing and seeing such stars as Jackie Robinson. Pee Wee Reese and other great Dodger players, brings back fond memories. Any resemblance to Braves Field is now gone, but I can still show you where home plate was and remember a Braves' speedster named Sam Jethro. who had bad eyes, and can show you where he collided with the centerfield fence often.

Then there was the great Warren Spahn, who I can still see kicking that left leg high and delivering his famous curve ball. Enough of that. Leggett, O'Day to Start I did get a chance to talk to Maine's fine coach Walter Abbott and he said clearly that South Burlington's Jack Leggett and Mike O'Day will definitely be starters. O'Day, who saw considerable action last year, will be starting receiver while Leggett, who fractured his leg on the third play of the season opener last year against UVM, will be back at a defensive back slot. "Jack was our best defensive back last year going into the first game and there is no reason why he won't be this year," said Abbott.

Also headed for Maine is Rich Congdon of Rutland, who will be a freshman. Congdon is co-captain along with John Galle of Rice on this year's Vermont Shrine team. Also headed for Maine is Windsor's Carl Tan Creti, who played last year at Vermont Academy. By the way. South Burlington's Dave Russell is slated for backup work as a receiver at Maine.

MacPherson said he plans on using Essex' Greg Sprout as his kickoff. extra point and field goal kicker this season. Sprout, whose extra point gave the Vermont Shrine team a one point victory over New Hampshire last season, started the season with the freshman at UMass last season, but was called up to the varsity late in the season. Sprout, a sophomore, kicked six of seven conversions and two of tour field goals for the freshmen and was three-for four in conversions and one for one in field goals for the varsity. MacPherson also said.

"He is one of the few punt, pass and kick champions, who has made it in college football." Gerry Greene of Essex Junction will not report to the UMass campus for early football drills. "We leave that up to the freshmen and Greene decided he would play with the freshmen and concentrate on his studies the first year. This was his decision and we agree with it. We know he will help the varsity in the future," said MacPherson. One of the chief concerns of Yankee Conference coaches and sports information directors was the image, or the lack of it.

created by the Yankee Conference and suggestions have been made in an effort to sell the program to the media. This column just touches some of the things which went on at the meeting.
