Statesman Journal, Salem, Saturday, April 16, 1994 NORTHWEST Page 3B TDTT WTf 9 Portland first-grader got gun to even score The Associated Press PORTLAND A 7-year-old boy who brought a loaded semiautomatic pistol to school may have been aiming to get even with a classmate. The first-grader at Applegate Elementary School likely was just trying to scare the classmate when he allegedly pointed the gun at him, according to Portland School Police. No one was hurt, and the gun was not fired, but the incident unnerved parents and stunned school authorities. Lt. Steve Hollingsworth said the boy would be charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and bringing a firearm into a public area.

"We just want to convey that we have zero tolerance for people bringing guns into our schools," Hollingsworth said. The boy was suspended from school pending a hearing with his parents, principal Michaelann Ortloff said. The parents of the boy refused to be interviewed. The boy came to school Wednesday morning with the gun. Older students spotted him showing off the gun to a group of classmates in a playground.

Hollingsworth said the boy had taken the gun from beneath his parents' bed. The Lorcin semiautomatic pistol would not have fired only because there was no round in the chamber. The gun's seven-shot magazine, however, contained six bullets. It's happening right now! Our Buyer's best picks from the 1994 Winter Markets. Best values and styles now at sale prices! Lawrence Benjamin Scherf, 20, was charged with felony murder and robbery.

His cousin, Tyrom Walter Thies, 21, remained at large, Sgt. David Lerwick said Friday. Thies, who had worked at the Leathers Oil Co. station, was being sought on a charge of aggravated murder, which carries a potential death penalty. Lerwick said he could not disclose details of Scherf suspected role in the robbery.

During the robbery, Rosealie Fey-Girtz, 51, of Happy Valley; Virginia Kay Endecott, 47, of Boring; and Mary Beth Wheeler Carey, 25, of Sandy were shot in the back of the head. A customer found their bodies on the floor. On Thursday, a Portland woman was arraigned on murder and robbery charges in the slayings. An innocent plea was entered on her behalf. Lori Ann Stephens, 23, had driven the two men to the gas station but didn't know they intended to rob it, said her husband, David Chrisman, 32.
