Late penalty kick costs Pennridge Pennsbury rallies to top Rams BYjEFFSAUKAITIS THE INTELLIGENCER FAIRLESS HILLS After making back-to-back appearances in the PIAA Class AAA District One semifinals, Pennridge's girls soccer team hopes to take the next step this season. With one week of Suburban One League National Conference play in the books, the Rams have demonstrated they have enough skill to compete with the other top contenders. What they don't have is a league victory to show for it.

Yvonne Moyer scored on a penalty kick with six minutes remaining in regulation time Friday, lifting Pennsbury to a 2-1 win over the visiting Rams in a rematch of last year's district semifinals. "I'm not happy right now," Pennridge center back Kaitlin Campbell said. "We've started off with a really tough schedule, but we're right there. It's going to get better as the season goes on." The loss came two days after Girls Soccer Pennridge (1-2 overall, 0-2 SOL) dropped a decision by the same score to defending conference champion Neshaminy. "I'm asking the girls to do something they haven't done the past three years," said Pen- nridge first-year coach Jorge Rodriguez, who is implementing a new system after not being hired until about a week before preseason practices began.

"We didn't even get outside until the first game, really. "So that's the encouraging thing the fact that I really haven't gotten to show the girls what I want out of them, but yet we're getting this kind of performance. That's the positive aspect: Without a lot of instruction, they can still outplay teams teams that were supposed to be very competitive within the league." A Pennridge mistake opened the door for Penns- bury to win Friday. The Rams had taken a 1-0 lead on an Emily Froehlich goal, but they gave the Falcons a gift goal 11 minutes later when goalkeeper Shannon Zickler misplayed a high bounce on Ariel Vegot- sky's free kick from 45 yards out. The Rams had the better of the play in the second half, but fell behind for good when Pennsbury was awarded a penalty kick with about six minutes remaining.

The referee who made the call for a foul in the penalty area was standing about 35 to 40 feet away from the play. After the whistle, the referees conferred for about a half-minute and decided to award the penalty kick, which Moyer converted. "I have no idea, but apparently (the call) was a push by one of our players," Rodriguez said. "It's kind of hard to believe that he called it and he saw it 50 yards down the line. But it happens.

"The refereeing I don't think was the biggest factor, although it might have seemed like it. If we start to take care of the things that we can take care of and control, we're not going to have to worry about the calls that the refs make." Pennridge defender Lindsey Lyons said she believes her team is going to change its luck in the near future. "We really had it there, but we couldn't hang onto it," Lyons said. "It's definitely a heartbreaker. It was a shame (that the penalty kick was called), but we have to move on and push forward and get 'We've started off with a really tough schedule, but we're right there.

It's going to get better as the season goes on." Kaitlin Campbell, Pennridge center back past that. "I think we're going to all of a sudden pick it up and go on a winning streak. It's just been tough getting into it so far, but I think we're going to pick it up. It's been an adjustment (with a new coach and system), but we're connecting and I think it's going to pay off."
