Statesman-Journal, Salem, Wednesday, August 31, 1988, 3D kSD1 DS MJ fefi 11 me woomeua Th Associated Prass CINCINNATI Danny Jackson became the National League's first 19-game winner as the Cin Pittsburgh manager Jim Ley-land said: "He's an outstanding pitcher with outstanding stuff. We had him holding the ropes but couldn't put him away." Luis Quinones' two-run double capped a six-run first inning as the Reds combined four hits, two walks and a hit batsman in the first against Brian Fisher (7-10). Herm Winningham led off with a double, Chris Sabo was hit by a pitch, and Kal Daniels walked to load the bases. Eric Davis hit a two-run single, and another run scored when Fisher made a wild pickoff throw. Ron Oester hit an RBI single, and Quinones' double finished Fisher.

New York 1, San Diego 0 at New York Bob Ojeda pitched a six-hitter, and Gary Garter singled home a seventh-inning run as the Mets blanked the Padres for the second straight night. Ojeda (9-12) pitched the Mets' 19th shutout. He struck out six hitting streak. Jones, promoted from the minors last week, singled to make it 6-5. Center fielder Brett Butler misplayed the ball to allow another run to score.

Phillies' reliever Kent Tekulve pitched in his major league game. St. Louis 9, Atlanta 1 at Atlanta Greg Mathews shut out Atlanta on four hits for eight innings, and Jose Oquendo hit a three-run homer. Mathews (3-4) got his first victory since May 4. He was making his third start since being on the disabled list for three months with an inflamed left shoulder.

German Jimenez (1-6) gave up four first-inning runs and took the loss. Braves' infielder Jim Morrison got the final out in the ninth and now has pitched 3 scoreless innings in three appearances. The loss eliminated the Braves from the NL West pennant race. Atlanta (45-87) has the worst record in the majors. Braves' manager Russ Nixon said: "We haven't done anything all season.

We get a game here and a game there where we do something, but we can't maintain it." Houston 7, Chicago 4 at Houston Pinch hitter Denny Walling singled home the tiebreaking run in the sixth. Joaquin Andujar (2-5) won his first game since July 18. He gave up three runs on six hits in six innings, and Dave Smith went 1 innings for his 23rd save. National League and walked one in his fourth shutout this year and 11th of his career. Ojeda, winless since July 29, had lost five of his previous six decisions. In his losses, the Mets have gotten him two or less runs seven times. Dennis Rasmussen (12-8) who had won 10 of his previous 11 starts with the Padres, took the loss.

He gave up six hits, struck out two and walked one in seven innings. Mets' left fielder Kevin McReynolds, who threw out runners at the plate and second base, hit a leadoff double in the seventh and scored when Carter followed with a single to center. Los Angeles 4, Montreal 2 at Montreal Orel Hershiser i pitched a six-hitter for his 18th victory and the Dodgers' sixth straight against Montreal. Hershiser (18-8) struck out nine and walked one in his third straight complete game. He also hit a two-run double.

Brian Holman (2-6), making his first start in two weeks, took the loss despite a career-high 10 strikeouts in seven innings. He gave up five hits and four runs. Alfredo Griffin had two hits and scored twice for L.A. Philadelphia 7, San Francisco 5 at Philadelphia Phillies' rookie Ron Jones keyed a three-run eighth inning with a two-out single. Phil Bradley, whose three-run home run had given the Phillies a 4-2 lead, singled with one out against Craig Lefferts (2-8), and Milt Thompson walked.

Scott Garrelts walked Chris James, loading the bases, but struck out Ricky Jordan to end his 18-game California scouts like McKay grad By Reid English Of the Statesman-Journal Justin Martin had to make two adjustments in his baseball career this summer, and he's responded well to both. Martin, a former McKay High athlete, has a 6-1 record as a relief pitcher for the Bend Bucks of the Northwest League. Pitching in relief and playing pro ball were new to Martin, but he relished the chance. Now he will reap some rewards for his efforts by participating in the California Angels' Instructional League. "It's been a great experience here this summer," he said.

"I've had a lot of fun. "Getting to play in the Instructional League is really neat." Martin, who had a 6-5 record and a 2.86 ERA for Mt. Hood CC this past spring, signed with the Angels 30 minutes before the deadline prior to this year's June draft. The Angels drafted him in the 34th round a year ago and had until this year's draft to sign him. If he hadn't signed he would have been eligible for next year's draft.

Martin said he has enjoyed pitching in relief. "I get more opportunities to show what I can do," he said. "And I've been getting a lot more innings lately." Martin has 29 appearances, one behind teammate John Marchese. Martin has 46 strikeouts and 30 walks in 57 innings. Howie Gershberg, the Bucks' pitching coach, said Martin has pitched well in his role.

"Here's an 18-year-old kid at the start of the summer who we've used as a set-up man," Gershberg said. "He was pitching one inning at a time earlier. Now he's going longer. "We've got him using his curve more, and he's picked up a change-up." Gershberg, who was Salem's pitching coach when Salem was affiliated with the Angels, said Martin didn't get the opportunity to start because of numbers. "In our mini-camp, we wanted to see our left-handers and how they would fare in certain situations," he said.

"This doesn't mean he'll always be a reliever. He could be a starter in the future." cinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-4. Jackson (19-6) tied Minnesota's Frank Viola for the major league lead in victories. He gave up five hits in 82a innings, and Danny Jackson John Franco got the final out for his 28th save. "I got 19 and have seven more starts," said Jackson, who went 9-18 for Kansas City last year.

"If I don't get 20, I'm in real trouble." The Pirates fell 7Vz games behind New York, a 1-0 winner against San Diego, in the NL East. Oakland sfiumphs A's top Clemens The Associated Press OAKLAND, Calif. Dave Stewart pitched a five-hitter to best Boston's Roger Clemens as the Oakland Athletics beat the Red Sox 1-0 Tuesday night. Glenn Hubbard's bunt in the sixth inning brought Carney Lansford home on a suicide squeeze play, the A's first successful one of the season. Clemens (15-10) suffered his fifth consecutive defeat.

The right-hander, who allowed nine hits and struck out nine in 6V3 innings, had never lost more than three straight decisions before this season. Clemens raised his major league-leading strikeout total to 257, one short of the club season record set by Smokey Joe Wood in 1912. Stewart (16-11) struck out eight and walked three in his second shutout of the season. He ended the game by striking out the side. Chicago 4, Detroit 1 at Chicago Carlton Fisk had three hits while Harold Baines scored the go-ahead run and drove in another to hand the Tigers their fourth straight defeat.

Detroit manager Sparky Anderson said: "I don't know. We haven't been hitting. Injuries haven't helped. But you don't cry about that cause nobody is going to listen to you." Jeff Bittiger (2-4) yielded one run and five hits in 5V3 innings to gain only Chicago's third victory in 11 games with Detroit this season. Barry Jones pitched two innings for his first save.

Walt Terrell (7-11), starting for the first time this season with only three days' rest, allowed 12 hits and four runs en route to his 10th complete game. Cleveland 4, Kansas City 1 at Kansas City Tom Candiotti allowed five hits in six innings for his third consecutive victory to snap the Royals' four-game winning streak. Candiotti (11-8) walked four and struck out two for his third straight win since coming off the disabled list Aug. 19. He had suf- New York's Rickey Henderson fouls off a pitch from Seattle's Mike Campbell on Tuesday in the Mariners' 7-1 win.
