Statesman Journal, Salem, Friday, December 31, 1993 -i i i Page 3C BUSINESS Unocal will end high'cltaine ad campaign WASTE NOT, WANT NOT COMMUNITY EDUCATION ifefegl "have been accused of intentionally deceiving customers." "We entered this agreement with the FTC in order to avoid the time and extraordinary expense that litigation with the FTC would have involved," Lane said. Union Oil of California is a wholly owned subsidiary of Unocal Corp. The Leo Burnett advertising firm created the ads. In one such ad, the FTC said, consumers were told that Union Oil's 92-octane unleaded gasoline was "the highest level octane gasoline you can buy to help your car run better, longer." Another ad said: "Compared to regular unleaded, our 89 octane will give your car smoother starts and stops." The FTC said the three companies "did not have a reasonable basis to substantiate these representations." Lane said Unocal and Union Oil provided the FTC with "massive amounts of evidence about the characteristics of higher octane gasoline." The settlement requires corrective notices to be sent to Unocal credit card customers in Oregon, Washington, California, Hawaii and Nevada, all of whom received bill inserts making the disputed claims. The oil company pulls the advertisements because their claims are unsubstantiated.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON The nation's 13th-largest oil company and its advertising agency have agreed to withdraw unsubstantiated claims about the performance of high-octane gasoline, the Federal Trade Commission said Thursday. Under the terms of the settlement, Unocal the Leo Burnett Co. of Chicago and Union Oil Co. of California also agreed "not to make claims about the attributes or performance of any gasoline without first having scientific evidence to back them up," the FTC said in a statement. The commission said Unocal and Union Oil agreed to correct information sent to credit card customers in five states and to tell them that most cars don't need high-octane gasoline to perform properly.

The two companies also agreed to remind customers to check their automobile owners' manuals for the correct octane level of gasoline to be used. Unocal spokesman Barry Lane said none of the three companies Choose the classes or activities that interest you from the Salem-Keizer School District Community Education Program Guide. "There is an educated, urban middle class that is larger than the population of the entire United States," said McDonald's Corp. spokesman Brad Trask.

Some of the biggest and best-known companies in the United States have reached the same conclusion in the wake of a revolutionary economic reform drive launched two years ago. The prospects of getting an early foothold in newly liberalized India with the world's fifth largest economy and a middle class numbering as many as 250 million people is so enticing that U.S. firms have invested more here in the past year than in the entire previous 45 years of India's independence combined. THE PURPOSE OF THE preliminary declaration is to set out public facility improvement requirements (street, sewer, storm drain, water, etc). The applicant is also requesting a variance to the Salem Transportation Plan Street Design Standards that prohibit direct access onto an arterial (Pringle Road) by a middle school (the proposed use). The applicant has the burden of proof to show that the approval criteria can be satisfied by the facts.
