10A BURLINGTON FREE PRESS TUESDAY, JULY 4, 2000 NATION Town's innocence disappears with teen lifeguard Ed Fett (right) and Gerard Ta-tro hang an arrangement of flowers for missing lifeguard Molly Bish on the town common In -Warren, Mass. A week after her disappearance, Investigators continue to sift through hundreds of tips. Monday. Alicia Melesky, 15, said she will stay away from Comins Pond beach, even when it's reopened. "It just won't be the same anymore," she said.

"It just won't feel safe in this town anymore like it used to." Like many in town, she wore a symbolic pink ribbon, expressing hope for the missing teen-ager and support for her family. A sign on a front lawn said simply: "Pray for Molly." Bish's mother dropped her off, as usual, on the morning of June 27 to give swimming lessons. Within a half hour, swimmers had arrived, found her unattended be longings, and called for help. Police later learned that a man in a white car had been seen on previous days, staring at the blond, blue-eyed lifeguard. The teen-ager and her family are well known in this town 72 miles southwest of Boston.

Her father is a court probation officer; her mother, a teacher. "She was just like her mom," said a 15-year-old friend, Brian Maraglia. "Nice, caring, always had time to talk." Reached at home, the family declined comment Monday. Jerry Fountain, a family friend who has helped organize civilian volunteers, said they are holding up as best they can. Warren resident Carol Chaplin knew the teen-ager's grandmother, but not the girL Her voice was choked Monday.

Missing-person posters have been placed all around town, and Chaplin sometimes imagines in instants of hopeful fantasy that she sees the missing teen-ager's smiling face on passing girls. "You see her picture, and everyone looks like her," she said. Out of sympathy, the town canceled its July 4 fireworks. "It wouldn't be right," said 17-year-old Bob Hallisey, "to celebrate Fourth of July without Molly." Molly Ann Bish was leading a small-town life of hard work and clean fun. The 16-year-old played school sports, kept out of trouble, and was spending the summer working as a lifeguard at the town beach. She was known for being responsible, which is why it was unlike her to disappear from her lifeguard job one day last week, leaving behind her lunch, sandals, and a two-way radio meant to call in emergencies from the isolated pond. Police soon ruled out any likelihood she drowned or ran away. Now people in her central Massachusetts hometown of 4,550 are filled with the fear she was kid-happed from the beach.

Dozens of investigators were following leads Monday and searching for Bish with dogs and a helicopter. Massachusetts State Police Capt. Robert Bird said investigators have interrogated at least two suspects "who are being closely scrutinized." They were not arrested, however, and Bird did not identify them. In addition, six commanding pfficers have either been sent or will receive written reprimands for their mistakes during the June 11 attacks, which followed New York's annual Puerto Rican Day Parade. In detailing results of the internal investigation, Police Commissioner Howard Safir said he felt "very personally responsible" for the attacks.

Six of 59 alleged victims have claimed officers ignored their pleas for help. "We are better than how we acted on that particular day," Safir said. During the attacks, some women were doused with water, while others have said they were stripped, groped and robbed. Among the victims were a 14-year-old girl, three British tourists and a French couple on their honeymoon. As of Monday, 29 teen-age boys and men have been arrested.

Five officers one lieutenant, one sergeant and three officers face unspecified disciplinary actions for either engaging in acts of misconduct or failing to help several women, Safir said. mn DVD Player with Remote MOOaSW WO 9 STOKE Comrjletje DIRECTV System.
