(AP) Yale University President A. Bartlett Gia-malli, in a commencement speech Saturday, attacked the thinking behind Moral Majority-type movements, blaming it for an increase in intolerance In the United States. In his baccalaureate address, Giamalti said movement members "arrogantly assert that their morality is in the majority. "A civil society can be shattered by the kind of coercion that now seeks to become commonplace," he said.

"We must insist on law, not on rule by decree. We must insist that the principles of the Constitution be applied through the courts and resist the desire that the Constitution be endlessly amended." The Smith-McDowell Mouse, a historic house built in 1840 in AsheviUe, will be dedicated in a special ceremony on May 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. The house, at 283 Victoria Road, is on the campus of Asheville-Buncombe Technical College. Renovations costing about (250,000 were completed in January, and more renovations are planned. The house was named for James McConnell Smith, who lived from 1787 to 1856, and William Wallace McDowell, who lived from 1823 to 1893.

Smith built and operated the first bridge over the French Broad River and was a succesful businessman. He owned the Buck Hotel in downtown AsheviUe. Smith's daughter, Sarah Lucinda Smith, married William Wallace McDowell, and raised nine children in the vation. Still to be renovated Is a smaller house nearby which had been used as slave quarters, a smokehouse and a laundry. The smaller house was also built in 1840.

Restoration plans also call for furnishing the house. Honored guests at the dedication ceremony will be Sara W. Hodgkins, secretary of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources; representatives of the Western North Carolina legislative delegation; and city and county officials. Renovations have been funded by the state Buncombe County AsheviUe private foundation civic groups, memorials, memberships and other community funds house built by her father on a farm south of AsheviUe.

The three-story house was elegant for its day, featuring four massive chimneys and double porches supported by slender columns. It was entered on the National Register for Historic Places In 1975. The exterior of the house was stabilized in 1978. It has been restored by the Western North Carolina Historical Association as a museum and heritage center. The house will be open for tours from June 2 through October on Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.
