She was a free-lance writer and journalist and had been published in numerous newspapers and periodicals, most notably Woman's Day magazine. She main was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. Maurice retired from American Enka Corp. after 42 years of service. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Gowan.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired farmer and live Georgia S. Boone Fred Owenby County, and lived most of his life in Haywood County. JAMES EDWARD MAYNOR WEAVERVILLE James Edward Maynor, 79, a lifelong resident of Buncombe County, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 3, service. She was a caregiver for members of her family. She was a daughter of the late Claud Sherrill and Jennie Sutherland Sherrill.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Hipps and Helen Wheeler; four brothers, Ellis, Leroy and Dewy Hipps and Eugene Sherrill; and an infant son, Sammy Anderson. She is survived by two daughters, Lois Noah of Asheville and Lorraine Smith of Lake Norman; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Joseph's Health System on Sunday, Feb. ers, Jack, G.L., J.D., Harold, Allen and James O'Neil. He retired from Dayco in 1974 with 32 years of service. He was a member of East Fork Baptist Church. He cherished his family and had a passion for animals.

CHRISTOPHER DALE GLEN ALPINE Christopher Dean Dale, 47, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003. The funeral services will be held at 1 1 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Glen Alpine Cemetery, The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Wednesday at Sossoman Funeral Home In Morganton. Berlin Hancock of Tupelo, Miss. In addition to his parents, also preceding him in death are two brothers, W.A. Hancock of Batesville, and L.D. Hancock of Tupelo, and two sisters, Ruby Kennon of New Albany, and Claudia Dunn of Tupelo, Miss.

A veteran of the Navy, he served on the USS San Juan in the Pacific fleet during World War II, earning seven battle stars. After the war, he married on Nov. 23, 1946, and operated retail clothing stores in Grenada, Miss. In 1959, he and his brothers started a wholesale and retail fabric company in Tupelo, that grew to more than 350 retail stores during the next 1 0 years. After selling the business in 1969, he moved to Tampa, where he speculated and developed real estate.

He was a member of the Asheville Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Elaine B. Hancock; two sons, Garry H. Hancock and wife, Joyce, and Barry K. Hancock and wife, Melanie, of Arden; three grandchildren, Suzanne Farmer and her husband, Paul, of Hendersonville, William Hancock and Rebecca Hancock of Arden; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Justin Farmer; brother, Dale Hancock and his wife, Marjorie, of New Albany, three sisters, Er-line Edwards of Millington, Theressa Kilgore and her husband, James, of Tupelo, and Odessa Clayton and her husband, Edwin, of Montgomery, two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hancock of Paducah, and Elaine G.
