Mary Jane was born on Jan. 9, 1918, in Xenia, Ohio, one of three children born to Della (Bottorff) and Ted West. After high school, she he attended Ohio State University for a year and also worked for the government at Wright Field in Dayton. She married Richard Lamb in 1941, and in 1950 they moved with Mary Jane their family to Lamb Phoenix.

For a time Mary Jane sold real estate in Scottsdale, Ariz. In 1954, after residing briefly in Las Vegas, her husband's work brought them to Asheville, N.C., where they lived until retirement. In addition to raising a family, Mary Jane was enterprising outside the home and involved in activities and projects in the community. During these years she continued her interest in contract bridge and eventually earned the distinction of bridge master. Mary Jane and Richard returned to Arizona after retirement and settled in Tucson, where they built a home.

They enjoyed many leisure activities, visits from family and friends and made several trips abroad. In 1995 they moved from Port Angeles, to be close to family in British Columbia, Canada. Mary Jane passed away on Monday, Feb. 11, 2002. Mary Jane will be greatly missed and remembered by those close to her for her industrious nature, her generosity, and her love for family and friends.

She was predeceased by her son, Ricky in 1965; her husband, Richard, in 1999; and brothers Kenneth and Jim West. She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie May of Courtenay, B.C.; granddaughters, Ocean Varney of Toronto, Ontario, and Anna and Shannon Mayo, both of Courtenay; great-grandson, Isaiah; sisters-inlaw, Kathrin Lamb of Eugene, and Mary Jane West of San Diego; and brother-in-law, Jim Lamb of Oteen, N.C.; and cousins, nieces and nephews. A remembrance service was held at her previous residence in Port Angeles. CHARLES OAK BARNETT ASHEVILLE Charles Oak Barnett, 84, of Aurora Drive, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2002, at a local hospital. A native of Madison County, Mr.

Barnett had lived in Buncombe County for the past 20 years. He was a member of State Street Church of God. Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by his parents, Lattie and Elizabeth Chandler Barnett; his first wife, Bessie Helton Barnett; grandson, Craig Goldsmith; sisters, Vina Thomas and Meredith Payne; brother, Ed Barnett. Mr.

Barnett is survived by his wife, Lea Burrell Barnett; daughter, Effie Lee Willis of Asheville; sons, Ronnie Goldsmith, Charles "Bud" Barnett, both of Marshall, James Barnett of of Illinois, and David Barnett, also of Marshall; step-son, Larry Coates of Barnardsville; sisters, Tressalee Ramsey and Stella Gahagan, both of Marshall, Cordy Harrison of West Virginia; Christine Franklin, also of Marshall; brother, Clyde Barnett of Fairview; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and three great great-great-grandchildren. A native of Henderson County, she was a member of the Salvation Army and was a retired nurse from the Brooks- -Howell Home. Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Henry Taylor and Lillian Taylor Smith Hattie Jones Cudd and was the wife of the late Ervin Smith. and She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Billy Hensley. ROBERT BROCK CANTON Robert "Red" Wesley Brock, 76, of 249 North Canton Road, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Mission St.

Joseph's Health System in Asheville. A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Charlie W. and Ella Devore Brock. Mr. Brock resided in Haywood County most of his life and was a Navy veteran serving in World War Il.

He retired from American Enka Corporation with 40 years of service and was a member of North Canton Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon, a member of the choir and a Sunday school teacher. He was a retired member and former secretary of the North Canton Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Canton American Legion and a former Canton Auxiliary Military Policeman. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Pauline Clark Brock; a daughter, Rebecca Trantham of Canton; grandchildren, Stephanie Trantham and Joshua Trantham; a sister, Mary J. Fore of Arden; brothers, Warl Brock of Canton and Perry Brock of Candler. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.

Armstrong, 73, entered eternal life Tuesday, April 9, 2002, in the Spruce Pine Community Hospital. A native of Arkansas, he was the son of the late Ella and Seessel Armstrong and was preceded in death by a sister, Jackie. Most of his adult years were spent in Michigan, where he was selfemployed as a home improvement contractor. He retired to Spruce Pine in 1994. He was an Army and Air Force veteran serving overseas in Guam.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Spruce Pine. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo Massey Armstrong; son, Gordon of Michigan; two daughters, Cathy Sparks and Valarie Robertson, both of Oklahoma; a sister, Norma Martin of Arkansas; three grandchildren and three gre great-grandcildren. Charles' No. 1 priority in life was to know and follow the teachings of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and in death, to be an encourager to all who read this, to know his savior in the same way and to gain His peace and love that is everlasting. A memorial celebration will be held at 2 p.m.

Gustafson, 87, formerly of St. Petersburg, an associate evangelist with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association since 1959, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2002, at his home.

LEAH WELCH FRANKLIN Leah "Nonie" Welch, 73, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, in a local hospital. A native of Macon County, she was the daughter of the late George Williamson and Mary Burdell "Mamie" Anderson and also was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Welch, who died in 1985; one brother, Richard Williamson; one sister, Esther Smith; and one grandson, Stevie Roan. She worked in the snack bar at Bowers Department Store and in the shoe department of Sky City; she was a caregiver and helper of the elderly, a lifelong member of Cartoogechaye Baptist Church and a member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class. The many words and prayers you offered in our time of need comforted us and we were overwhelmed by the generosity of all who sent flowers and food. We would like to offer special thanks to Reverends Greg Warren, Larry Arrowood and Jimmy Dean Hensley who officiated at our beloved mother's funeral service. Their strength, guidance and compassion helped ease our sorrow. The music of the David Shelton Family, Liberty Baptist Church Quartet and Carl Robertson added a sense of serenity and grace to the service and we thank them for their contributions. We will be eternally grateful to Mary and Evet for the wonderful, loving care they gave to our mother at Mayflower House.

Equally as special was the sensitivity and support given ten our mother and to us by the entire staff of Madison Health Care during the final days of our mother's illness. Finally, we want to express our gratitude to the entire staff of Madison Funeral Home. The sincere care and professionalism of Larry Peek and Laura Cody made the service more special for all of us. During our most difficult time, the warmth of family and friends is what sustained us. We can never fully express our thanks for what all of you did for us, but we hope you know that your kind wishes and special thoughtfulness eased our pain and brought us a measure of peace.

FERN SHEPPARD SPRUCE PINE Fern Opal Biddix Sheppard, 72, of 218 Laurel Creek Court, a saved Child of God, went to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, April 12, 2002, at Spruce Pine Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born June 23, 1929, in Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late James Avery and Lula Biddix Biddix. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Lee Sheppard; brothers, Everett and Clarence Biddix; and a sister, Lessie Pittman.

She is survived by daughters sons Kenly; Debbie Nancy and and Scott Tim Tedder Wilson of Dallas, N.C.; Genelle and Jerry Proctor of Blacksburg, S.C.; and E'Shellah Denton of Sharon, S.C.; a sister, Eileen Yelton of Gastonia; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service with special music provided by Toby and Richie Crowder, great nephews. Kobylanski, 74, of 54 Ridgewood Drive, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Mission St. Joseph's Health System. was the son of the late Anthony and Teofila Mendofik Kobylanski. He was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. and lived most of his life in Long Island until his retirement.

He has resided in Haywood County for 16 years. He was a member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church and was a Navy veteran having served during World War II. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy J. Lapp and her husband, Rick, of Hopkinton, Mass.

and Dianne Alexander, of Alexandria, two sons, John A. Kobylanski and his wife, Judi, of Rome, N.Y. and Michael Kobylanski, of Astoria Queens, N.Y.; four grandsons, Daniel and Christopher Lapp and James and Matthew Kobylanski. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Jim and Annie Miller Hensley and the husband of Kate Arrowood Hensley who died in 1990. He was an avid fisherman. Surviving are his wife, Lilly Edwards Hensley; four daughters, Birdie Tucker of Marshallton, Anna Hensley and Sandra Moore of Elsmere, and Lisa Kay Brammer of Newport, four sons, James Albert Arrowood of Forest City, Tommy Hensley Sr. of Middleton, Kenneth Hensley Sr. of Newark, and Samuel Hensley Sr.

of New Castle, a sister, Pearl Durr of Elsmere; a brother, Hensley of Jonesborough, Quinton, grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Revs. Gary Norton and Cecil Hensley will officiate.
