A native Asheville, he was president of the University Botanical Gardens, a member of the Asheville Civitan Club and Civitan of the Year in 1968, on the board of March of Dimes, a member of Biltmore Forest Country Club, Rod and Gun Club and the board of trustees at Saint GenevieveGibbons Hall. He graduated from Gibbons Hall and received a B.S. degree from Western Carolina University.

He was formerly president of Asheville Diaper Service and Humpty Dumpty Gift Shop for Babies, 12 Hendersonville Road. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis E.

Heddon of Washington, D.C. Funeral services will be held Bessie Guffey FRANKLIN Bessie Mae Guffey, 76, of the Watauga community died Friday in a Swain County nursing home after an extended illness. A native of Macon County and a daughter of the late Samuel H. and Dovie Buchanan Guffey. She was a homemaker and a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Wint DeHart of Franklin and Margie Kelly of Oak Ridge, five brothers, Lonnie Guffey of Candler, Robert Guffey of Franklin, Dewey Guffey of Bryson City, Leslie W. Guffey of Sylva and Wiley Guffey of Jeffersonville, and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Bryant Funeral Home Chapel.

Richmond Henson OLD FORT Richmond Fred Henson, 81, of 208 Spring Old Fort died Friday in a Marion hospital. He was a retired textile worker. Surviving are his wife, Elendor Henson; a daughter, Dorothy Kale of Rock Hill, S.C.; three sisters, Bonnie Frazier of Rhodiss, Kellie Ayers of Swanand Allie Messer of Winston and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of McCallKirksey Funeral Horne, Old Fort.

The Rev. Bill Conner will officiate. Burial will be in McDowell Memorial Park. Sondra Allen Sondra Allen, 16, of 115 Powell Swannanoa died Saturday in a Black Mountain hospital after a long illness. She was a native of Yancey County and had lived in Swannanoa for the past 13 years.

Surviving are her parents, Earl and Lois McMahan Allen; four brothers, Arthur and Russell Allen of Swannanoa, Lewis and Virgil Allen of Black Mountain. A native of Madison County, she had lived in Buncombe County for the past 32 years. She was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Webb Wells and the wife of Clifford Payne, who died in 1934.

A native of Lockport, she was a daughter of the late Walter W. and Nell Lindsey Leslie and the wife of Edward Thomas, who died in 1946. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and was past president of the Fortnightly Club. Surviving are a son, Edward 0. Thomas Jr.

Born in Baltimore, she was the wife of the late John B. Forrest Sr. She moved to Weaverville, N.C., in 1970 where she lived with her daughter. Surviving are a son, John Forrest Jr. of Stevensville; a daughter, Mary Belle Peacock of Stevensville, a former resident of Weaverville; a brother, Edward D.

Scholarship Is Awarded By Tourist Group The Asheville Tourist Association has awarded a scholarship to Dawn W. Jones of Candler, who is enrolled in the hotel -restaurant management curriculurn at Asheville Buncombe Technical College.

The tourist association was formed in 1949 and is the oldest in North Carolina. The scholarship to A-B Tech was presented by Lloyd Kirk, president of the association. Dr. Arnold Krochmal, 119 Bell Road, said his family spent the night twice in a motel because their house had no water. Although Krochmal lives just outside the city of Asheville, he gets city water. He said city crews were "all over the place" Saturday trying to repair the system, but that no one had been to tell him what the problem was. The emergency answering service for water repairs at Asheville city hall said Saturday the source of the water problem was not known.

Sewer Smoke Testing Begins A sewer smoke testing program will get under way here Monday in an effort to find leaks in the sewer system. The tests involve blowing smoke into the sewer lines through a manhole using a portable blower.

Professional Services Group is doing the work for the Metropolitan Sewerage District. Officials say that the tests could cause smoke to issue from plumbing roof vents. This is normal, according to the company, who said the Asheville Fire Department will be alerted to the general location each day where smoke testing operations are in progress to minimize possible reporting of false fire alarms. The smoke is harmless and should dissipate quickly, the company said. The testing should be completed by mid-April.

Hendon To Speak At Forum Newly-elected 11th District Representative Bill Hendon will share his impressions of the new 97th Congress with an audience at a Community Forum in Asheville Thursday, Feb. 12. The luncheon meeting will be the third in a series sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the Smoky Mountains Inn on the Plaza. It will begin at noon in Grosvenors Restaurant on the 12th floor of the Inn. Hendon will be questioned by a panel before he responds to questions from the audience.

Dave Bossard of the rescue squad said James Cousar, 24, of Dillon, S.C., apparently was getting out of the car on Broadway when the right door slammed shut, pinning his wrist.

The rescue squad spent eight minutes working with a device called an air chisel before freeing Cousar's wrist. Cousar was carried to Memorial Mission Hospital, where he was treated in the emergency room and released, according to a hospital spokesman.
