I- IJ- ASHEVILLE CITIZEN-TIMES, Feb. 8, 1981- Western North Carolina Deaths And Funerals Arthur Field Dies; A ft Latisha Moses of the Ellilav Civic Leader, 43 Arthur Jordan Field, 43, of Blltmore Forest, died unexpectedly Saturday morning. A native of Asheville, he was president of the University Botanical Gardens, a member of the Asheville Clvltan Club and Civitan of the Year in 1968, on the board of March of Dimes, a member of Biltmore Vorest Country Club, Rod and Gun Club and the board of trustees at Saint Genevieve-Gibbons Hall. He graduated from Gibbons Hall and received a B.S. degree from Western Carolina University.

He was formerly president of Asheville Diaper Service and Humpty Dumpty Gift Shop for Babies, 12 Hendersonville Road. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis E.

Field; his wife, Emmie Spencer Field; two daughters, Eleanor and Spencer Field; one brother, Vance B. Field of Newport News, two sisters, Mrs. William F.P. Coxe Jr. of Asheville and Mrs.

She moved to Weaverville, N.C., in 1970 where she lived with her daughter. Kerns of Chester; two sisters, Laura Miller of Baltimore and Evelyn Baker of Wilmington, and three grandchildren. Mass will be said at 10 a.m.

Tuesday In St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Chester. Father Arthur Mahoney will officiate. Burial will be In Laudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore. The family will receive friends Sunday and Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

at Helfenbein-Hubbard Funeral Home, Chester. Scholarship Is Awarded By Tourist Group The Asheville Tourist Association has awarded a scholarship to Dawn W. Jones of Candler, who Is enrolled in the hotel-restaurant management curriculum at Asheville Buncombe Technical College. The tourist association was formed in 1949 and is the oldest in North Carolina. The scholarship to A-B Tech was presented by Lloyd Kirk, president of the association.

Haw Creek Area Out Of Water From Staff Reports Residents In the Haw Creek area and on Bell Road were without water Saturday, and one resident said it was the third time since Thanksgiving the water had been off. Dr.

Arnold Krochmal, 119 Bell Road, said his family spent the night twice In a motel because their house had no water. Although Krochmal lives just outside the city of Asheville, he gets city water. He said city crews were "all over the place" Saturday trying to repair the system, but that no one had been able to tell him what the problem was. The emergency answering service for water repairs at Asheville city hall said Saturday the source of the water problem was not known. Gertie Payne Gertie Wells Payne, of 71 Woodrow Ave.

died Saturday in an Asheville hospital after an extended illness. A native of Madison County, she had lived in Buncombe County for the past 32 years. She was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Webb Wells and the wife of Clifford Payne, who died in 1934. Surviving are three daughters, Elsie Chandler of Asheville, Gladys Chandler of Weaverville and Pauline Davis of Candler; four sons, Leonard Payne of Salisbury, Richard and David Payne of Asheville and Bill Payne of Alexander; two sisters, Lizzie Graham and Grace Gasperson of Arden; two brothers, Rome Wells of Marshall and Arthur Wells of South Carolina; 11 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren. Car Door Traps Man The Buncombe County Rescue Squad used metal-cutting equipment Saturday night to free a man whose right wrist was trapped between a car door and the vehicle frame Dave Bossard of the rescue squad said James Cousar, 24, of Dillon. S.C., apparently was getting out of the car on Broadway when the right door slammed shut, pinning his wrist.

The rescue squad spent eight minutes working with a device called an air chisel before freeing Cousar's wrist. Cousar was carried to Memorial Mission Hospital, where he was treated in the emergency room and released, according to a hospital spokesman. Fire Call! 11 Corinthians Sewer Smoke Testing Begins Bessie Guffey FRANKLLN Bessie Mae Guffey, 76, of the Watauga community died Friday in a Swain County nursing home after an extended illness. A native of Macon County and a daughter of the late Samuel H. and Dovie Buchanan Guffey. She was a homemaker and a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs.

Surviving are her parents, Earl and Lois McMahan Allen; four brothers, Arthur and Russell Allen of Swannanoa, Lewis and Virgil Allen of Black Mountain. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home. Chaplain David Cox will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home, 115 Powell St. This is normal, according to the company, who said the Ashevilie Fire Department will be alerted to the general location each day where smoke testing operations are in progress to minimize possible reporting of false fire alarms. The smoke Is harmless and should dissipate quickly, the company said.

The testing should be completed by mid-April. WANT TO HEAR BETTtR? A sewer smoke testing program will get under way here Monday in an effort to find leaks in the sewer system. The tests involve blowing smoke into the sewer lines through a manhole using a portable blower. Professional Services Group is doing the work for the Metropolitan Sewerage District. Officials say that the tests could cause smoke to issue from plumbing roof vents.
