"I think we're going to have something to surprise them with," said Cincinnati's Essex Johnson. The Bengals, still recovering from a rash of injuries, are convinced things will be different this week after deflating 28-10 loss to Denver last week. "We're a better team than we demonstrated last week and we intend to prove It," said Johnson, the Ben- gals' top breakaway threat. It's the conference opener for the two clubs.

Both are 0-1. Houston dropped a 34-14 decision to the New York Giants last week. Gillman, who arrived at the University of Cincinnati In 1949 after the school suffered its worst more than a decade, was an instant success. He took the Bearcats to two post-season bowl compiled a 50-131 record in six years before heading on to the pro ranks. He capped his career in 1964 by leading the San Diego Chargers to the American Football League title.

Houston fans are optimistically pointing to early results of Gillman's wholesale housecleaning over the winter. A victory over the Dallas Cowboys late in the preseason buoyed hopes that things will be different in 1973. Sunday's encounter matches two of the promising young quarterbacks in the Ken Anderson and the Oilers' Dan Pastorini. The Bengals remain troubled in their search for a backup quarterback, however. Twice-retired Greg Cook was unexpectedly thrust into the No.

2 job when Virgil Carter was lost for the season. Cook had problems in a brief stint against Denver last week. Cincinnati made a move Friday in hopes of bolstering the situation when they acquired free agent Mike Ernst, who was cut by the Denver Broncos. The Ben- gals also added fullback Ed Williams to help fill the void left by Doug Dressier's injury. Sent packing in wake of the action were veteran offensive guard Guy Dennis and recently-acquired quarterback Tim Van Galder.

Pastorini is likely to test the Bengals' biggest bugaboo in last week's defense. Cincinnati won last year's two meetings 30-7 and 61-14. The Bengals lead the six-year-old series 4-3-1. Picked up by the Ben- gals were quarterback Mike Ernst, who was recently cut by the Denver Broncos, and 250-pound fullback Ed Williams. Van Galder joined Cincinnati as a free agent last week after being cut by the St. Louis Cardinals. Dennis, a fifth-round choice of the Bengals in 1969, was regular in Coach Paul Brown's messenger guard system in 1970 and 1971. Ernst was signed by the Broncos out of California State College as a free agent last year.

He appeared in only one game. The acquisition of Williams, 24, apparently was to strengthen the Bengals' injury-riddled backfield. Doug Dressier missed last week's opener and Essex Johnson has been hindered by bruises. Williams played at Langston (Okla.) University and has been playing minor league football in Wisconsin, according to the Bengals. Major standings American KM W.
