Mary Francis Jenkins could do the same with detective work. Both were among II people who graduated last week from the Citizens Police Academy of the Asheville Police Department during a ceremony in the lobby of the police station.

Ia the past four weeks they learned an the workings of the Asheville Police Department from adniinistration to special operations and from criminal investigation to crime prevention. In an, 20 different topics were discussed in the 16-hour orientation that started May 7, Officer Luke Bigelow, academy director, said. The academy's purpose was to better inform participants of the inner workings of the department and to give the department input from citizens on bow operations might be improved, he "It was a very good experience. It is some- this kind of program up," Michalove said. "It gives you an idea of the inside of police operations you can't get from reading a newspaper, seeing a chp on TV or even from a detective movie." The academy is the brainchild of Bigelow who came up with idea while working with the Community Police Council, Beavers said.

Similar programs have been successful in Durham and Orlando, FUl, according to Bigelow. He was pleased with the way things went for AsheviUe's first Citizen's Police Academy. The department is planning on offering four sessions each year for up to 30 people per session. Participants must be at least 18 years old and be a member or prospective member of a community watch group. The next session is slated to begin in Aug.

McKinney, who never missed a session at the academy, said be 'thoroughly enjoyed this academy, each and every one. It was very enlightening." For his part, McKinney said the session be enjoyed the most was when Officer Jan Colvin of the K-t unit demonstrated how drug dog Tax could search an office or find "pretend drugs" hidden in one of five boxes. "Take your normal citizen and ask him how much be knows about the police department and youH find he knows very little," said Jenkins, who said she enjoyed detectives Walt Robertson's discussion on criminal investigations most "You really get the facts." On hand for the 30-minute ceremony was Chief Gerald Beavers and Asheville Mayor Ken Michalove.
