Three marathon fund-drives are scheduled annually, the first taking place this month. According to Dilley, "Our fund-raising is absolutely painless and fun for those who are listening." This remains to be seen (or rather heard). Construction on facilities at Fort Ethan Allen should begin in 1981 and when it is finished, a certain number of VPR staff will be moved there from Windsor. Until then, WVPS 107.9 FM will simulcast with the Windsor station. Dilley has a host of dreams for the future of the new station: Using the theater for performances by the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, musicians of all kinds, Franco-American folk festivals and radio drama which would then be broadcast live throughout Vermont.

Extensive regional news programs might be possible if financial support is sufficient to pay a team of reporters. Then, of course, talents can be traded. Ray Phillips explains "We can now bring the cultural wealth of southern Vermont to northern Vermont and vice-versa." regular basil to VPR in the southern part of the state. Then there's the statistic that the Windsor station has the highest per-capita financial support of any public radio station In the country. Why so much? 'The quality of the broadcasting and the loyalty of our listeners," Stearns suggests.

Money aplenty is needed, of course, to put WVPS 107.9 FM on stable footing. A fund drive has just begun to raise more than $200,000 to pay for the transmitter, other equipment and to build studios, and offices. Also at Fort Ethan Allen, WVPS will have the use of an acoustically perfect theater the 380 seat Herrouet. All this is possible thanks to an agreement with St. Michael's College.

But will the necessary money be forthcoming? "We'll raise it all right," Stearns maintains. "We've done it before with Windsor." However, once that sum has been collected, more cash obviously will be 1 TOE Friday Saturday Nit Specials $1495 forTWO complete dinners Choke of PRIME RIB or CRAB LEGS plus salad, hot brood and potato or rice pilar. 863-4429 127'i College Burl. DELICIOUS READY-TO-HEAT PIZZA r1 But all of this is in the future. Vermont Public Radio's immediate concern is to win subscribers in order to swell its coffers. Dilley is hoping to find 3,000 "First Friends" to sponsor WVPS 107.9 FM. In exchange for $20, "First Friends" will receive 12 issues of the monthly publication which describes the programming in detail. Those who don't want to become "First Friends" but just need the program guide can receive it for $15.

Ray Dilley is sure that support will come. What he is not so sure about is convincing the post office to allow WVPS' address at Fort Ethan Allen to be 107.9.
