I Scoreboard; 2D. Basketball; 3D. NFL; 4D. Business; 5-6D. Statesman Journal Salem, Oregon Tuesday, December 12, 1989 WDDU Seahawk celebrates Page 4D Taylor has catches of 92 and 95 yards The Associated Press ANAHEIM, Calif.

Joe Montana made a slight change in his normal routine. He made John Taylor his playmate Monday night instead of Jerry Rice. Taylor responded with a record-breaking performance that spurred the San Francisco 49ers to their sixth NFC West title in seven years. Montana and Taylor combined on 92- and 95-yard touchdown passes for the 49ers, who twice rallied from 17-point deficits to beat the Los Angeles Rams 30-27, ending a four-game winning streak by the Rams. Rams' coach John Robinson said, "Those two big plays, Montana to Taylor, were obviously devastating.

"But we knew we never had the game in hand, not against this team. We knew that the team that played the full 3 hours and 15 minutes would win, not the team that played three hours." The 49ers, who trailed 17-0 after 13 minutes and 27-10 at 1:26 into the fourth quarter, got the winning score with 3:12 the 49ers' Keith Henderson recovered at the 27. Six plays later, Craig went in for the winning score. Robinson said, "The team that won was the team that could come back from mistakes." He noted that the 49ers had almost 145 yards in penalties. "Both teams made enough mistakes to lose, but we made the mistakes at the end." Before the Rams' late mistakes, it was the 49ers who self-destructed.

Montana, intercepted twice this year before Monday, threw two interceptions against the Rams. The first came with Los Angeles leading 27-17 with a first down at the San Francisco 5. Jim Everett fumbled the snap, and Matt Millen recovered at the 4. On the first play, Montana found Taylor short over the middle, and he sped along the right sideline for the score. They had combined on a 92-yarder in the second quarter two plays after the Rams, ahead 17-3, failed on a fake field goal attempt.

Mike Cofer missed the extra point after the second Montana-to-Taylor touchdown, leaving the score at 27-23. Ron Brown fumbled the kickoff, and left on a 1-yard run by Roger Craig. It gave the 49ers a 12-2 record and clinched not only the division title but the home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Rams (9-5) still need to win twice to gain a wild-card playoff berth. Despite the heroics by Montana, who completed 30 of 42 passes for 458 yards, and Taylor, who caught 11 for 286 yards, the game turned on two Rams' turnovers in the fourth quarter.

Ducks have a smashing year School records fall at Oregon And that was enough to earn him Pacific-10 Conference basketball player of the week honors for the second straight week.

Last year, only once did a player win the "I'm certain someone will come along and break my records." Derek Loville UO's rushing and scoring leader v. jr By Bill Purcell The Statesman Journal Some mighty big names were erased from the Oregon record book this season. Dan Fouts, Chris Miller, Bobby Moore (Ahmad Rashad), Mel Renfro and Jack Leicht were among those surpassed as the bowl-bound Ducks, in the words of coach Rich Brooks, "separated themselves from 25 years of Oregon football." If career marks are included, 19 records were broken. One of the record-setters, Terry Obee, said of his senior class, "This is a pretty good group." Obee is Oregon's all-time leader in punt returns; Derek Loville leads in scoring and yards rushing; and Chris Oldham leads in kickoff returns. An unofficial record was set by guard Chris Husko, who started every game (45) in his four-year career.

Underclassmen also contributed to the marks. Junior Bill Musgrave posted season records for passing yardage ancytouchdowns, and single-game marks for passing yardage and total offense. And sophomore Gregg McCal-lum set a season record with 100 points, while hitting all 34 of his extra-point attempts. The players took their achievements in stride. "I couldn't have done it without my teammates," McCallum said.

"And I have to thank the Lord. He directs my kicks." Loville said, "I'm certain someone will come along and' break my records." Avoiding injuries made the" records possible. Oldham said, "I've been fortunate that I was hurt seriously in only one game." Husko said, "I really don't have much to say, except that I was able to play because I didn't' get hurt much." Oregon returned 10 starters on offense from its 1988 squad, and the talent and experience produced a school record 352 points and 41 touchdowns. Eight different players caught 12 or more passes. And that doesn't include Kolya Tefft, whose five touchdowns on seven receptions must set a record for scoring efficiency.

Thanks to its depth in receivers, Oregon finished second in the Pacific-10 Conference in total offense (418 yards a game) behind Southern Cal. Last year, Oregon finished ninth. On defense, the Ducks recorded an unofficial season record of 38 quarterback sacks while finishing second in the Pac-10 in total defense (336 yards a game) behind Southern Cal. Junior linebacker Peter Brantley led the way with 10V4 sacks. The defense did collapse at times, challenging the offense to respond, and that was no more evident than in a 45-41 loss to Brigham Young.

In that game, Musgave set a record for passing yardage (489), and the team set a record for total offense (667). Musgrave downplayed his accomplishment after the game. "The record doesn't mean much since we lost," he said. A final testament to the Ducks' season was made by the fans. A record total of 548,606 attended Oregon's games this season, including a one-day record of 46,087 for the Civil War against Oregon State at Autzen "Stadium.

Ron CooperStatesman Journal Derek Loville will complete his Oregon career as the school's all-time leading scorer and rusher. For the record TV" Gary Payton to-back weeks. Stanford's Todd Lichti was the recipient Jan. 3 and Jan. 9.

Payton, a senior guard, scored a season-low 10 points and committed six turnovers in Friday's 78-72 loss to No. 17 Memphis State. Oregon State coach Jimmy Anderson admitted that Payton was not up to par. "I'm never going to say he's had a horrible game because he's too good to say that," Anderson said. "But by his standards of execution, Memphis State probably was one of his poorest performances." Payton responded two days later with a season-high 39 points on 17-of-26 shooting from the-field in a 96-90 overtime victory against Tennessee.

He also had five rebounds and nine assists. Anderson said: "To come back and probably have his greatest game he's had at Oregon State to me indicates a person who can re-. fleet, learn from an experience and then take it to a higher level." Payton and Lichti, a rookie with the Denver Nuggets, each were chosen Pac-10 player of the week three times last season to lead the conference. Blazers return from the road The Portland Trail Blazers will try to extend two streaks tonight when they return home to face the Los Angeles Clippers after a six-game road trip. The Blazers (15-6) have beaten the Clippers 26 consecutive times at Memorial Coliseum, including a 116-94 victory two weeks ago.

The' Clippers' last win in Portland was Feb. 24, 1981. Portland also has won its past seven at home, where it is 10-1. After going 3-3 on the road trip, the Blazers are 5-5 away from home. In the Nov.

Davis, who had 44 saves in 48 chances last year for San Diego, said he turned down bigger offers and dropped his desire for a five-year contract to sign with the Royals.

"It was not a matter of money," he said. "I had a lot of factors that I was considering, and this organization met most of those factors. "I took into account that Kansas City is a most consistent organization and the way my family felt." Wathan said Monday after the Royals signed Davis to a $13 million, four-year contract. "When we have our American League Cy Young winner go eight innings and we've got our National League Cy Young winner in the bullpen, what are you going to do? What a decision. Which Cy Young do you end up closing the game with?" Wathan said Davis will take a lot of the strain off his starting pitching, which threw 27 complete games in 1989.
