'Jrfday, August xy. Hans Complete For Big Durene Festival At Mt. Holly The (Jastonia (N. Gazette MOUNT HOLLY plans have been completed by the Mount Holly Junior Chamber of Commerce lor the second annual Durcnc Festival to he Held August 31 to Sept. 6.

According to an announcement by Peter N. Chagarls, Jaycee president, the coming will surpass (lie highly successful event of last year in every.way. Already the Durene Golf Tournament, which is attracting widespread attention among sports enthusiasts of this section. Is fn progress at the American Goll Course here. With a record 112 contestants participating.

It boasts a larger number of entrants than any other golf tournament heretofore held in Oas- ton county. Trophies lor the winners in this outstanding sports event are now on display at Holland Drug Company here, and Include bram statuettes for the winners of th championship first, sec third and ladies' flights. Th finals will be played on Saturdaj September 6. Eaves Is th defending champion, and Berth Dunn, noted Softball player an winner of the Teaguc Trophy i 1946, Is one of the. leading contest ants in the ladies' flights.

Sunday afternoon, August 31, gigantic ten-act aerial circus, re plete with thrills and chills, will be staged at the new Mount Holly Airport on the Stanley road, at which V'S wm officially dedicated and opened. The Hon. Basil WWtener of Oastonia, solicitor for the fourteenth district, will make the dedicatory address. Jaycee of- flcals have obfalned the services of Haskell A. renowned aviator and operator of the Plaza Airport In Charlotte, to assist them Jn lining up first class talent for the event, and plans are to present most stupendous air show ever given In Gaston county.

FARMERS DAY A new attraction on the festival program will be Farmer's Day, which the Jaycees have planned for the Information, pleasure and profit of the farmers of this section. Taking place on Thursday, September 4. it will embrace an all-day program. Merchants and business men of the town are cooperating with the Jav- cces to give the farmers on that day bargains they have not seen since before the war. Bargain prices will prevail in the stores throughout the day.

Riley Fowler, agriculture teacher in the local high school, will have the Farmers' Day program in charge. Mr. Fowler announces thai the speaker for the day will be Morris Morrison, Lincoln county agent, ha-ls well known throughout this ection for his accomplishments in his office and his wit as a speaker. Beginning at approximately 11:00 a. various dealers in farm machinery will display and demonstrate farm equipment on the high school athletic field.

Firms scheduled for demonstrations include Willys, Sears-Roebuck, God ley Brothers, demonstrating Allls Chalmers machinery, Petit Motors, demonstrating Ford tractors and equipment, A Equipment Companj', demonstrating Farmall Equipment, John Deere Company and Oliver Plow Company. A moving picture showing use, care and upkeep ol farm and dairy equipment will be presented to the farmers by John Deere Company. All fanners are urged to take advantage of these demonstrations. Also on the program will be the presentation of prizes to the eldest farmer present, the largest farm family present, and others for lucky contestants in various events, Including gifts for the children. Prizes include such practical items as dishes, a pressure cooker, bed linens, overalls, etc.

There will be no charge for this event FOOTBALL GAMK The annual Mount Holly High School-Alumni football game, a regular feature of the Durene festival will be staged at 8 p. m. Friday September 5, at Hutchison-Lowe Field Promising to-be-even better than last year's game, which ended In a 7-7 tie, the 1947 game will Include many former Mount Holly High School Alumni J.

B. Thompson and Curtis Armstrong predict that their team will be faster than that of last year, ar.d Coach Dick Thompson of the high school will pit against the Alumni team seasoned players who are confident that they will win from the Alumni this year. Boxing Coach Tommy Dunn of the high school has lined up an outstanding card for the annual boxing show to be staged in the high schooi gymnasium Saturday, September 6, at 8 p. m. Opening with a battle royal, the event- will include four preliminary fights and the main bout between two Golden Gloves champions, Arthur "Crash" Davis of Mount Holly and Roy Clark of Greensboro.

A ticket to the boxing match entitles the purchaser to admission to the square dance, also to be held In the gymnasium, Immediately following the main bout. The Mount Holly Jaycees extend a cordial invitation to all residents of this section to attend any one, or all of the events of Durene Week. Landers Chapel Folks Have Guests MRS. G. T.
