Young Bayne reigns at Daytona By Ray Parrillo INQUIRER STAFF WRITER For area prospects Mark Herzlich, Pat Devlin, and Da'Rel Scott, the difficult work of training for this week's NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis is complete and the task of impressing the draft day decision-makers is about to begin. Herzlich, a linebacker from Boston College who was a standout at Conestoga High School, had the more difficult road among the three.

The ca- FL reer of the 6-foot-4, 244-pound Herzlich was Scouting threatened when a rare Combine form of bone cancer was di- agnosed after his junior Wednesday March i season at BC. After missing Indiana1 pol is the 2009 season while undergoing treatments, Herzlich returned last season and became one of college football's most inspiring stories. He is known for his aggression, football savvy, and ability to blow up running plays. Most projections have Herzlich going from the mid-second round to the third round. By most accounts, Herzlich has all the physical tools to be an every-down linebacker in the NFL, but some teams may view his medical history as a red flag.

The 6-4, 220-pound Devlin, a product of Downingtown West High who led Delaware to the Football Bowl Championship title game, may be the top non-BCS quarterback in the draft. He has frequently been compared to Joe Flacco because like Flacco, he transferred to Delaware from a BCS school (Penn State). Devlin was named Colonial Athletic Association offensive player of the year. Flacco's stock rose dramatically at the combine. Devlin is known for his intelligence, quick release, and leadership.

"He doesn't have Flacco's arm strength, but who does?" said Mike Mayock, draft analyst at NFL.com. Devlin's task is to use the combine to improve his draft status, in which he is currently projected as a fourth-rounder by NFLDraftScout.com. Scott, a running back from Maryland and Plymouth Whitemarsh High, was MVP at the Military Bowl. The 5-11, 205-pound Scott is projected as a seventh-rounder by NFLDraftScoutcom. Scott does not possess blazing speed.

His 40-yard dash times have ranged from 4.34 to 4.52 seconds. were involved in an early 14-car wreck. Gordon, who started on the front row, and Martin also sustained damage in the melee. Gordon questioned the aggressiveness of his fellow drivers, especially so early in the race. "What I don't quite understand is why guys are doing it three-wide, three-deep running for 28th," he said.

Fortunately for him, it didn't happen until he missed the turn pulling into Victory Lane at the Daytona 500. The youngest driver to win the Great American Race gave the historic Wood Brothers team its fifth Daytona 500 victory its first since 1976 with David Pearson and the 20-year-old Bayne did it in a No.

21 Ford that was retrofitted to resemble Pearson's famed ride. In just his second Sprint Cup start, Bayne stunned NASCAR's biggest names with a thrilling overtime win Sunday at Daytona International Speedway, holding off Carl Edwards after fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. crashed in NASCAR's first attempt at a green-white-checkered flag finish. "Our first 500, are you kidding me?" said Bayne, who needed directions to Victory Lane. "Wow.

This is unbelievable." Unbelievable, indeed. Just one day after celebrating his 20th birthday, the sport's biggest race was captured by an awshucks rookie from Tennessee who shaves once a week and says the cartoon Rugrats is his favorite TV show. "I've never been to a racetrack with this many people!" he yelled after finally arriving in Victory Lane. With the win, Bayne breaks four-time champion Jeff Gordon's mark as the youngest winner in Daytona 500 history. Gordon was 25 when he won the 500 in 1997.

"I think it's very cool. Trevor's a good kid, and I love the Wood Brothers," Gordon said. "I'm really happy for him. And I think it's great for the sport. To have a young talent like that he's got that spark, you know?" The race had a record 74 lead changes among 22 drivers, and a record 16 cautions that wiped out many of the leaders, including Earnhardt Jr.

on the first attempt at NASCAR's version of overtime. It put Bayne out front with a slew of unusual suspects. David Ragan, winless in 147 career starts, was actually leading the field on NASCAR's first attempt at a green-white-checkered finish. But he was flagged for changing lanes before the starting line, then an accident that collected Earnhardt in the middle of the pack brought out the caution, and Bayne inherited the lead. But he had two-time series champion Tony Stewart, now winless in 13 career Daytona 500s, lurking behind with veterans Bobby Labonte, Mark Martin and Kurt Busch.

All were chomping at the bit for their first Daytona 500 title, but Bayne never blinked, holding his gas pedal down wide open as he staved off every challenge over the two-lap final shoot-out. "It was too easy," Bayne said. He said he thought for sure he was going to brake, let Stewart in front of him, and push someone else to the win. Then nobody ever passed him. Edwards wound up second in a Ford and was followed by David Gilliland, Labonte and Busch.

Juan Pablo Montoya was sixth, Regan Smith seventh, and Kyle Busch, Paul Menard and Martin filled out the top 10. Earnhardt Jr. finished 24th. The race was a battle of attrition, thanks to the dicey two-car tandem racing at nearly 200 m.p.h. that was the norm throughout Speedweeks.

Eagles sign Jeanty, former Bengals LB The victory for NASCAR pioneers Leonard and Glen Wood ended a 10-year-losing streak, and came the week of the 10th anniversary of Dale Earnhardt's fatal accident on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. That anniversary had everyone almost certain Sunday's win would go to Earnhardt the prodigal son, who shied away from the suggestion that the stars were lined up for a spectacular tribute to his father. Bayne, whose official website says "Coming Soon," never even allowed himself to daydream about such a magical finish. The Eagles signed linebacker Rashad Jeanty on Sunday, bringing in a former Cincinnati Bengal who missed the 2010 season after suffering a broken leg in a 2009 playoff game. Jeanty, 27, signed a one-year deal and will compete for a job at a position where the team struggled last season.

Jeanty has 32 career starts, including 15 in 2008. He led Cincinnati with 14 special teams tackles in 2009. Jeanty played with the Bengals from 2006 to 2009 after playing with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League from 2003 to 2005. He played at Central Florida in college, with Asante Samuel. Jonathan Tamari NBA Standings Bryant propels West to All-Star Game win Eastern Conference ATLANTIC I Pct.

The Los Angeles Lakers' veteran guard put on anothWest 148 er show among stars East 143 at the 60th All-Star Game, also grabbing 14 rebounds and overcoming LeBron James' triple-double for the East.

Clearly pushing for another trophy against an East roster stacked with rival Celtics and Heat, Bryant matched Bob Pettit's NBA record with his fourth MVP award. "Being at home, I wanted to come out and play hard, put on a good show," the 32-yearold Bryant said. "This will be my last All-Star Game in front of these home fans, so it feels good to be here." Although the protracted courtship of West starter Carmelo Anthony dominated much of the all-star weekend discussion, Kobe gave the Los Angeles crowd another memory to go with Clippers rookie Blake Griffin's dunk contest win on Saturday. James had 29 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists for the East, but Miami teammate Dwyane Wade limped off in the third quarter. Bryant won the MVP trophy in 2002 and 2007 before sharing it with Shaquille O'Neal in 2009. Pettit won four MVP awards with the St. Louis Hawks from 1956-62. The Nuggets forward apparently spent the weekend working on his agonizingly protracted separation from Denver. Los Angeles was abuzz with rumors of talks with management from New York and New Jersey throughout the weekend, but the 'Melodrama had no resolution before the game.

Anthony got a smattering of boos in the first quarter when he chose a layup over a dunk on a breakaway. Bryant remedied that moments later, hovering underneath the rim before throwing down a two-handed jam on the other side. The New York Knicks insist they are on the same page in their pursuit of Carmelo Anthony, and Isiah Thomas isn't involved in it. Without mentioning either of those people by name, the Knicks released a statement attempting to shoot down reports that their negotiations with the Nuggets had been taken out of the hands of team president Donnie Walsh by Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan with Thomas advising him. Yahoo! Sports has reported that Thomas is driving everything through Dolan.

"Isiah is calling the shots for New York," Yahoo! reported a front-office executive with knowledge of the Anthony trade talks as saying. "It's a disgrace. Donnie Walsh should walk.".
