JOE ROBBINS Getty Images CINCINNATI In the only previous game in which Maikel Franco batted cleanup for the Phil lies, a lefthanded pitcher was on the mound and both Chase Utley and Ryan Howard were given a Sunday off. In a 5-2 loss Wednesday to the Cincinnati Reds, Franco batted in the No.4 spot between the slumping Utley and Howard, who also has cooled off over the last two weeks.

If the rookie third baseman continues to hit, he might continue to see his name penciled in the cleanup spot. "We'll see. He has that potential," Phil lies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "The way that he's hitting right now, it sets up Howard for RBI situations possibly with first and third and man on second, things like that, runners in scoring position. So I think it works for two players.

We'll just see. But I think he's potentially a three, four, five type of a hitter." An eighth-inning single Wednesday extended Franco's hitting streak to nine games, the longest by any Phil lies player this season. The 22-year-old has 16 hits in 36 at-bats during his hot streak, with five doubles, four home runs, and eight RBIs. He has raised his average from .194 to .286. Franco enters this weekend's series in Pittsburgh slugging .551, by far the best on the team through his first 98 major-league at-bats of the season.

Ivan DeJesus Jr. homered to left-center, Frazier and Pena scored ahead of him. Skip Schumaker grounded out to shortstop. slump. He popped out to shortstop in the first, worked a walk in the third, and grounded out to second in the fifth.

His final out, a fly out to left field, came against lefthander Tony Cingrani in the seventh with two outs and runners on the corners. During Utley's woeful April, the Phi ls attributed some of his numbers to bad luck on hard-hit balls. That hasn't been the case recently. Utley said he feels fine. "He's not stinging the ball like he was in April and May," Sandberg said.

"This series he struggled for quality at-bats and with stinging the ball for the most part." REDS 4, PHILLIES 0 PHILLIES from D1 ball's worst record, were swept for the third time in their last five series. They have lost 16 of their last 21 games overall, and their 23 losses away from South Philadelphia are the team's most through its first 30 road games of a season since 1941. "You just have to continue to battle, try to make improvements on a daily basis," Utley said. "I think overall, we could swing the bats a little bit better than we have the past week or so. We can just play better baseball.

"We haven't played so well the past, I don't know, seven to 10 days. But prior to that we were playing well. So it's there. We just have to continue to come to the field every day and prepare to win." In the Wednesday matinee, the Reds' four-run first inning against Jerome Williams doomed the Phi Hies. Ivan De Jesus second major-league home run his second of the series highlighted the inning for Cincinnati.

The Reds scored four times in the first inning for the second consecutive game. Opponents have scored at least a run on the Phi Hies in the first inning of 10 of their last 18 games. Williams, who entered the game having allowed an NLworst 87 hits, settled down after the first inning and capped his afternoon with five scoreless frames. It marked just his second six-inning outing in his last eight starts. The Phi Hies halved their early deficit Cameron Rupp drove in both runs on a second-inning single and a fourth-inning double but they failed to overcome the bottom of the first.

The Reds outhomered the Phil lies, 8-0, in the three-game series. "It seems like about the last couple of weeks we've been coming from behind and trying to play catch-up in just about nearly every game, it feels like," Sandberg said. "The lack of power has shown, as far as not being able to put up a crooked number." With rookie righthander Jon Moscot making just his second major-league start for the Reds, Sandberg thought Wednesday set up well for Utley to break his Second inning PHILLIES: Brennan Bosch in center; Kristopher Negron to shortstop for the Reds. Rupp's big game Cameron Rupp, starting his career-high 19th game of the season, drove in both of the Phil lies' runs. The backup catcher doubled his season RBI total and continues to play well behind the plate.

Could Rupp garner more playing time? "We'll see. I like the way he played today," Sandberg said. "I like the way he's played the last few games. He's swung the bat and he's got a good arm. He works hard behind the plate, so we'll see how that all pans out." Fifth inning PHILLIES: Revere grounded out to second.

The South Philadelphia native was sitting with his parents around the computer on Wednesday, the final day of baseball's first-year player draft. He got a call from his adviser, telling him that the Phi Hies would draft Koplove in the 17th round. "I put down the phone and a minute later it's on the board," the righthander said. "It's been a dream come true. It's hard to put it into words.

When that opportunity came, it wasn't even a second thought." Koplove, 21, starred at Penn Charter and spent the last three seasons at Duke, where he pitched and played shortstop. He will forgo his senior season to sign with the Phi Hies. Koplove lives in Packer Park and can see Citizens Bank Park from his driveway. He grew up a rabid fan. Koplove was in the stands when Roy Ha Iladay threw his playoff no-hitter.

"I watched Jimmy Rollins play his entire career and grew up a Chase Utley fan. All of these guys are my sports heroes. They're in my backyard," Koplove said. "It's unbelievable just knowing that I'm going to have a chance. I'm with them now" Koplove was the state's Gatorade player of the year as a senior at Penn Charter, where he blossomed into one of the area's best starting pitchers.

Duke used him this season as its closer. He saved a school-record 11 games. The righthander threw with a three-quarters delivery and struck out 37 batters in 25113 innings. Koplove does not know what role he'll play with the Phi Hies. He said he'll do whatever they ask.

"Closing this year was one of the coolest experiences I've had playing," Koplove said. "It's all on you at the end of the game. Why else play the sport? That's pretty awesome." Extra bases In his loss Tuesday night, Aaron Harang walked the first two batters he faced in a start for the first time in his 14-year major-league career. By issuing a free pass to Brandon Phillips, he snapped a majorleague-leading streak of 78 starts without walking the leadoff man in the first In eight starts, Sean O'Sullivan has matched up against Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer (three times), Reds ace Johnny Cueto, the Pittsburgh Pirates' A.J. Burnett, and New York Mets phenom Noah Syndergaard.

O'Sullivan will oppose Pirates ace Gerrit Cole on Saturday. Cole boasts a major-league-best 1.73 ERA. Jake Kaplan REDS 5, PHILLIES 2 Eighth inning PHILLIES: 11 Hoover relieved Cingrani for the Reds. Fightin' Five rounds and thanked people in the neighborhood who helped him along the way. He will report soon to Clearwater, where the Phil-lies will give him an introduction to the minor-league system. Koplove then will learn which minor-league team he will play for. It will be the start of an unbelievable journey. Koplove's older brother, Mike, played seven major-league seasons as a sidearm reliever.

He spent a spring with the Phi Hies and is now a scout with the Los Angeles Angels. Kenny Koplove was 5 years old when Arizona drafted his brother out of the University of Delaware. He does not remember much from that day. His earliest memory is rushing out of a restaurant when the family learned Mike had been called up to the majors. "That was the first time I had a realization of what baseball was," Koplove said.

"Sitting down now and having a full grasp of what it means to be drafted and how hard and difficult it is, it's pretty crazy" Koplove and his father, Steve, celebrated his selection with hot dogs from Texas Wieners on Snyder Avenue.
