Statesman Journal, Salem, Sunday, August 20, 1989 BASEBALL Page 5E weireHi to ratteen warns Dodger notes tied a league record by leaving 21 runners on base. Randy Johnson, Everett's lead-off batter who played high school ball at North Salem High, had a nine-game streak of getting on base in the first inning broken Friday against Eugene. In the Giants' six games against the Dodgers, Johnson has four singles and one walk in the first inning. Johnson leads Everett in several offensive categories: hitting runs (42), walks (52), stolen bses (13) and on-base percentage By Capl Lynn The Statesman Journal If the Everett Giants were a little sluggish Saturday against the Salem Dodgers, it was understandable. The Giants battled Friday with the Eugene Emeralds until 12:50 Saturday mor-nign the Northwest League's curfew when the game was suspended after 19 innings with the score 5-5.

The game will be continued next week when Everett travels to Eugene. When completed, it will become a league record for most innings. None of the statistics become offical until the game is completed. During the 19-inning marathon, Everett and Spokane The Dodgers play their first and only afternoon game of the season at 2 today against the Everett Giants. Left fielder Don Carroll, who didn't play Saturday, said the time change is welcome.

"It will give us a change and break up the monotony," Carroll said. "It will give us a reason to wake up." Paul Branconier, Salem's starting pitcher today, said: "I usually pitch in the light anyway because I'm done throwing by the time it gets dark. It will probably be fun to pitch in the middle of the day for once." The Dodgers usually play their games at 6 or 7 p.m. With the night off, Carroll ran with the pitchers because he owed pitching coach Burt Hooton. "I messed up in the scorebook, so I had to run," Carroll said.

"And I survived." Carroll said the workout for the pitchers, who run every day except Sunday, consists of four 110-yard sprints, three 220s, two 330s and four 440s. In between, they walk 110 yards. Saturday was the first time in August that the Dodgers faced a left-handed starter. The Giants threw Chris Hancock. Salem will face another lefty, Maximo Aleys (4-4), who is sixth in the league with a 2.50 ERA, Monday in game three of the series.

"To move up in this organization it's usually by attrition," he said. "You have to wait for somebody to leave." Salem's club has kept Garcia busy this season. "I've had more injuries than last year and the year before that," he said. "Last year with the Orioles, I filed six or seven workman's comp claims. This year, I've done 16 or 17." Garcia, 33, said workman's compensation claims are filed if an injury eventually may need the care of a doctor.

The claims state that the injury was work related, and any medical bills will be paid by the organization's insurance. Two Salem Dodgers outfielders Chris Morrow and Brock McMurray have been sent home for rehabilitation because of shoulder injuries. Pitcher Bill Miller elected to stay with the club for his rehab after suffering a fractured rib. Garcia said: "Everybody else is limited, but they can still play one way or another. So it's still a decent year, and they're still in there." In 10 years as a trainer, Garcia said he hasn't run into bizarre injuries like he has at Salem.

"It's the first time I've heard of a pitcher fracturing a rib just throwing; McMurray's injury is usually on the dominant arm; and Morrow's injury is usually from a collision, like in football," he said. Garcia said the aspect he likes most about his job is seeing the improvement in the players. "I really like the fact that I get to treat an injury and then see how the athlete performs as he gets better and better," he said. "I really get enjoyment out of that." Since his initial interest in being a trainer, Garcia has quickly advanced in the field. After receiving a bachelor's degree in physical education, Garcia stayed at Cal Poly-Pomona to study sports medicine.

He then took a job with the San Diego Padres' organization in the Gulf Coast League for one season. "I decided I wanted to work on my masters, and Southeastern Massachusetts offered me the head trainer's job and to pay for my masters degree." While there, Garcia was chosen from among 2,000 trainers who sent in resumes to work on a 175-person staff at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. "They chose 50 to work on specific sports, and I got chosen to work baseball," Garcia said. "I was real happy." Garcia went on to work for the Baltimore Orioles' organization in the Appalachian League for two seasons before taking a job this year with the Dodgers. "It was a big step up," he said.

"The Dodgers are probably one of the top three organizations with the New York Mets and the St. Louis Cardinals. They treat you well, pay what you're worth and give you all the equipment you need." Now he hopes to take another big step up right to Dodger REO. TO 49,99 39 99 REG. OVER 49.99 20 OFF IMPORT STARTERS 75 MONTH BATTERY AND ALTERNATORS Remanufoctured.
