Eagles fans can easily comprehend why Arkansas tailback Darren McFadden didn't lock up the Heisman Trophy yesterday afternoon. "He's a great back, but he was not going to win the Heisman at Neyland Stadium," Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo said after the Volunteers beat Arkansas, 34-13.

McFadden probably is the best offensive player in college football. He will burst onto the NFL scene in 2008 the way Adrian Peterson has this season. But just as Eagles opponents usually have ensured that Brian Westbrook isn't going to beat them this season, that approach worked here for Tennessee. Everybody saw McFadden tear holes through the South Carolina Gamecocks last week, gaining 321 yards despite painfully bruised ribs. Yesterday, McFadden had a respectable 117 yards, keeping him in the Heisman conversation just as ballots are being mailed out.

But even he acknowledged that most of his yards came after 24th-ranked Tennessee had grabbed a big lead. The Vols kept the Razorbacks in unworkable third-and-long situations the whole way. "They kept us off balance," McFadden said. "The whole team was out of rhythm. We never got it going.

I never got it going." Part of the Arkansas offensive scheme has McFadden taking direct snaps. The WildHog, they call it. Most of the day, it was a TepidHog. Through three quarters, five attempts produced just 7 yards. It didn't help Arkansas that McFadden's speedster running mate, Felix Jones, who leads the nation in yards per rush, didn't play after halftime because of a deep thigh bruise.

But Jones wasn't having any luck early, either. "They were bound and determined to keep us off the edge," Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said. In retrospect, McFadden understood the WildHog's lack of success. "The WildHog was a big part of our offense last year when we played them, and we knew they were going to prepare for it," McFadden said. When it counted most, the Razor-backs employed the NoHog.

Early in the second quarter, Nutt decided to go for it on fourth and 1 from the Arkansas 45, with UT up by 13-3. McFadden had that series off, but for the play, Jones came off the field. Did McFadden replace him? Nope. Neither one ATP: Suspended player Alessio di Mauro for nine months and fined him $60,000 for gambling on matches. WADE PAYNE Associated Press Darren McFadden, a Heisman Trophy candidate, had to work hard for his 1 1 7 yards in Arkansas' loss to Tennessee.

was out there. The Hogs handed off to the fullback, who was stopped for no gain when the offensive line couldn't generate any push. "That was just six inches," Nutt said. "You've got to be able to make six inches." It was closer to 36 inches, and isn't it easier to get that yard with the best running back in the country on the field, even as a decoy? McFadden bounced off a tackier once or twice and had one 20-yard run. But he said of the Tennessee defenders, "I don't think there were too many times they missed." Nevertheless, McFadden moved up to No.

4 on the all-time Southeastern Conference rushing list, behind only Herschel Walker, Kevin Faulk and Bo Jackson. Only Walker has gained more in fewer games. McFadden came from deep in the pack to finish second to Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith for last year's Heisman, after he rushed for 666 yards in November. In two games this month, the junior has 438 yards, with Mississippi State and LSU still to come. This game showed why it is difficult for running backs to take the Heisman.

LaDainian Tomlinson didn't win one. Neither did Peterson. Reggie Bush in 2005 is the only running back since 1999 to have won it. Bush was a deserving winner. And it was no coincidence that his Southern California team was No.

1 at the time of the vote. With little else at stake, the 6-4 Razor-backs should go WholeHog trying to get their man his Heisman. They might even let him play on fourth down. Combs spent the ensuing time-out berating any official standing nearby.

"Gordie said he'd never seen that called," Talley said. "But my thing is, had they not thrown the flag and Manning blocked that field goal, I'd have been upset." Officials returned the favor on Tow-son's late touchdown drive when 'Nova corner Jarred Corey, playing in place of Murrell, was flagged for a personal foul after drilling the receiver as a pass sailed over their heads. Two plays later, Sean Schaefer threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Demetrius Harrison with 52 seconds remaining. The same combination attempted to hook up on the two-point conversion, but Harrison couldn't hold on in a crowd. "Hey, we were just lucky," Talley said.

"Fate was with us." The Wildcats hurt themselves twice in the fourth quarter, losing 14 yards on a bad pitchout by Whitney on one possession and suffering a penalty that nullified a first down on the next. But Dicken and the offense did enough. "We wanted to take the clock down and stay inbounds, so I tried to do the best job I could moving the ball and holding on to it," Dicken said. "The offensive line did a great job of getting a push, and we were able to do it." Golf LPGA Tournament of Champions In Mobile, Ala. In its quest to secure a winning season yesterday, Vill-anova made life difficult for itself, with four starters suspended and enough mistakes made to allow Towson a chance to force overtime.

But the Wildcats stopped the Tigers' two-point conversion in the last minute and walked out of Johnny Uni-tas Stadium thrilled with a 14-12 Colonial Athletic Association victory. The Wildcats (6-4, 4-3 CAA) rode durable senior tailback Matt Dicken, who rushed 30 times for 133 yards, to hold the ball for nearly 39 minutes. The defense limited Towson (3-7, 1-6) to 27 yards rushing. Villanova's task was more challenging because of one-game suspensions for four starters wide receivers Brandyn Harvey and Anton Ridley and defensive backs Eugene Clay and Justin Murrell as well as four reserves, for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Coach Andy Talley, who said the suspended players would be back this week for the season finale against Delaware, said the punishments were meted out last Sunday.

"We had the whole week to prepare guys that played today," Talley said. "We're excited about having all those suspended guys come back. They've paid their dues. It's a tough thing to miss a game. Hopefully, they've learned their lesson." The Wildcats botched two scoring chances in the first half.

They missed one field goal because of a bad snap. They successfully executed a fake field goal later to advance to the Towson 4, but quarterback Chris Whitney fumbled the snap and turned the football over on the next play. Villanova came back after halftime with back-to-back scoring drives totaling 27 plays, 139 yards, and more than 13 minutes. Aaron Ball, on a 2-yard run, and Phil Atkinson, on a 10-yard pass from Whitney, scored the touchdowns. Tigers coach Gordie Combs argued, however, that the Wildcats never should have had the first touchdown.

Villanova lined up for a 22-yard field goal, and Towson's Justin Manning jumped across the line, making a Wildcats lineman react. Instead of a false-start call against Villanova, the officials penalized Manning for "threatening" the offensive player and causing him to move.
