Wednesday, April 27, 1 934 5 OBITUARIESNATIONALINTERNATIONAL ffttf gnrmuillf Nods Officer testifies King beating not justified Kevorkian moved body, associate says during trial For three years, I've put up with this, and it hurts. Look around this courtroom at these officers. Not one of them likes me. No one across the street (at police headquarters) likes me. What I'm telling these jurors is I did what I thought was Theodore Briseno, policeman thought the officer was unjustified in continuing to pummel King when he was down.

"When I looked at Officer Powell, I saw a frightened man," Briseno recalled. "His eyes were he was scared. I don't know if you'd call it a trance. I saw his eyes as wide as they could possibly be. I'd never seen that look before." Last week, the jury awarded King $3.8 million in compensatory damages from the city.

The jury is now hearing testimony for consideration of punitive damages against 15 people, including Briseno, Koon, Powell and Timothy ti-fied and that he came close to involved in King's arrest. On cross-examination by Powell's lawyer, Briseno muddied his testimony by saying that although he believed on March 3, 1991, that the beating was wrong, his repeated viewing of the videotaped incident has altered his Wayne County. "We felt Dr. Kevorkian would get a fairer hearing in Wayne County than Oakland County," Nicol said. Nicol owns the medical supply company that provides Kevorkian with canisters of carbon monoxide.

The trial is Michigan's first under its year-old ban on assisted suicide. The ban was passed specifically to stop Kevorkian, who faces up to four years in prison if convicted. Kevorkian, who advocates doctor-assisted suicide for some terminally ill people, has been present at the deaths of 20 people since 1990, five since the state banned assisted suicide. Nicol said he was with Kevorkian at 13 deaths. DETROIT (AP) Dr.

Jack Kevorkian helped a man suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease inhale a fatal dose of carbon monoxide in Oakland County, not Wayne County, where he is on trial, an associate testified Tuesday. Neal Nicol said he helped Thomas Hyde into Kevorkian's van, parked at Kevorkian's apartment building, then waited outside while the retired pathologist hooked Hyde up to the carbon monoxide. "Tom's suffering is ended," Nicol quoted Kevorkian as saying when he emerged from the van about 20 minutes later. Hyde, 30, was unable to walk, speak or feed himself. He died Aug.

4. Nicol saw Kevorkian drive the body from Oakland County to neighborhing gaunt, thin Briseno sat with his head in his hand, apparently distraught. Briseno's testimony was most damaging to Powell, who testified Monday that the beating was justified and that he came close to shooting King. Briseno said he tried to stop Powell's baton because he Chernobyl victims remembered on disaster's 8th anniversary telling these jurors is I did what I thought was right." Briseno was one of four officers tried on state and federal charges in the beating. Larry Powell and Stacey Koon were convicted of violating King's civil rights and are serving 30-month prison sentences.

As victims were mourned in Moscow and elsewhere Tuesday on the anniversary of the 1986 catastrophe, many Ukrainians still battle Chernobyl-related health problems or live with fears that disaster could strike again. Theodore Briseno, who broke rank with his colleagues early on and called the beating unjustified, was choked with emotion as he blurted out his feelings on being a pariah in the Los Angeles Police Department. "For three years, I've put up with this, and it hurts," said Briseno, a defendant in the punitive damages phase of King's civil lawsuit over the March 3, 1991, beating.
