Vuiversity Again The sympathy of some of the State paper seems to have been aroused by an anonymous circular (supposedly emanating from some of the diskatis fied sjudate the State University Mt Oxford) One of these documenta reached us by mail a few days since but we have found it a safe rule to pay no heed to anonymous documents cause tliat is right need not hide behind an unsigned communication If any of the University students have a real grievance let them put their names to the protest Some of the State papers bewail wliat they term the state of attendance at the LTniversity Chancellor ulton makes a very satis factory explanation on this point say ing the statement published yester day it was given out that there are now only 131 students at the 1'inver sity as against 190 several weeks ago It is easy to account for this falling off in attendance as the law class has finished its examination and the members have left for their homes to return at commencement Again many students drop out about this time of the year not caring to take the examinations while others are given permission to go home and spend a few days after they have com pleted the examinations" We attach little importance to the number of students in attendance at the University as a test of its excel lence or merit During the last five years a mental and moral blight has spread over the State and the greater the excellence of the University the more likely that its attendance would not increase During this period the past five years the political leaders of the State the men who liave held high offices andwho have swayed public opinion liave as a rule been men of small calibre men who appealed to the prejudices and ignorance of a large portion of the people and who relied upon advocacy of the miserable free silver humbug and adoration of Populist Bryan as a means for ad vancement to high places rather than upon merit cluiracter or ability Under such conditions it would lie strange indeed if deserving and meri torious educational institutions should grow and prosper as they deserve The temporary leaders of public opinion in Mississippi wanted political adven turers from Nebraska Minnesota Kan aas etc to be the teachers and guides for the youths of the State and perliaps a great deal of harm has been done to the educational institu tions as well as in lowering the stan dard of public sentiment Under all the circumstances the State University and the other edu cational institutions in Mississippi have held their own remarkably well The statement issued by the Uni versity aculty and Chancellor ul ton last week shows tliat they have acted wisely and for tlie true inter ests of the Univeristy as well as for the best interest of tlie students and the Board of Trustees should fully sus tain them VlCIiBUltGWVUUlW'mT Published Every Day (Sunday Exceplpd)by CASHMAN CO is heid in instead of held when And Articles 7 And also repeal By Laws requiring inspectors to be
