THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Wednesday, July 3, 2002 Review Music Itzhak Perlman excels in Mann concert; case closed By Peter Dobrin INQUIRER MUSIC CRITIC Ever since Itzhak Perlman acquired godlike status among fans at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, it's been pretty much illegal to even think critically when his playing isn't up to snuff. Maybe that's why District Attorney Lynne M. Abraham was standing by in the audience. Just in case. You never know when an audience member might break out into unbiased thinking and have to be carried away.

It turns out the D. services were unnecessary at this first of the orchestra's concerts (12 this year) at the Mann. Perlman played wonderfully. In Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in minor, he was commanding, sensitive and musical.

In short, he was on. Perlman and guest conductor Andrew Litton seemed to connect with the piece on several levels. Both thought of it as a work to withstand full-blooded playing, which is exactly what Litton got from the orchestra. And everyone avoided the pitfall of becoming too sweet. It's usually the symphony on a program in which the conductor makes his strongest state ment.

And Litton led an appropriately passionate Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3inC minor (Op. 78), with organist Michael Stairs rumbling the house down. But in many ways, it was in the Bruch that Litton, music director of the Dallas Symphony, was at his interpretive best. Granted, the orchestra knows this piece well, and it was hard to detect which ideas were his and which were the players'.

But whoever the author, the presence of real opinions was obvious. The librarians of the Philadelphia Orchestra really should insert a cautionary note in the score to Verdi's La forza del destino: "Riccardo Muti was here." Anyone who leads this work has Muti's rhythmically charged performances to argue for or against. Litton didn't match Muti's harrowing account. But then, who can? Contact Peter Dobrin at 215-854-5611 or pdobrinphillynews.com. Next Philadelphia Orchestra concert at the Mann: JoAnn Falletta conducts works of Bernstein, Gottschalk, John Williams and Gershwin, with pianist Christopher O'Riley, tonight at 8.

Tickets are $5 to $78. Information: 215-893-1999. It's a sad day for Townsville and an unsettling time for moviegoers when the three girls take down some skyscrapers while battling terrorists. MELINDA SUE GORDON Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) and Agent Jay (Will Smith) break out the heavy artillery in their latest battle with aliens.

PUFF from El Most days, the Powerpuffs could make kasha out of Charlie's Angels. But the day the girls' creator, Craig McCracken, artist of the sharpest retro-modern cartoon around, made a feature-length origins saga about the Powerpuffs was a sad one for the City of Townsville. What once was the joke of The Powerpuff Girls is now its jinx. Mine is probably not the only first-grade Girls fan to tell Mom and Dad that she won't see the Powerpuffs on the big screen because she doesn't "want to see tall buildings fall." You see, the Girls test their superpowers in the laboratory of Townsville, where they inadvertently topple skyscrapers while protecting the populace from urban terrorists such as the mutant monkey Mojo Jojo. warfare," in the film's clever pun.) Through Sept.

10, Powerpuff mischief cracked us up. Now it makes us cringe. What do you say to a 5-year-old who asks why the mayor didn't call the Powerpuffs to save the World Trade Towers? (The BLACK from El pong to his ping. MiB headquarters has gone to the dogs. Literally.

Jay's latest partner is a profane, cigar-chomping pug named Frank, who made a brief appearance in the previous film. While most of the aliens who come to the attention of MiB agents are extraterrestrial vaudevillians who come to entertain, one new arrival is no laughing matter for Jay and his boss, Zed (Rip Torn). She is Serleena, an anorexic Medusa who takes the human form of wraithlike actress Lara Flynn Boyle, who illustrates a downside of having zero body fat: One's face more resembles wax than flesh. This is why Catherine De-neuve proclaimed, "After 40, a woman has to choose between her face and her derriere." Serleena (who is plenty surly, even in her black-lace brassiere and garter belt she disguises herself as a lingerie model) wants a torch that protects the galaxy. The whereabouts of said torch is unknown to MiB Central.

Only Agent Kay knows the details, and he, alas, has been "neural-ized" his memory erased by one of those MiB penlights. Men in Black II (Out of four stars) Produced by Walter F. Because he wants Laura to remember him, Jay does not neuralize her, which is against MiB code. Smith and Dawson have screen chemistry and physics and biology working for them, and it's fun to watch two attractive people made even more attractive by their mutual attraction. Likewise, Smith and Jones continue their magnetic rapport, even though it seems an eternity for the former's character to rescue the latter's from the Truro, post office where, it is revealed, postal workers are really aliens. As exemplified by the post-office sequence, MiB II is a lot of setup for too little payoff. feature is too intense for those under 6.) The Powerpuff Girls Movie is half enjoyable goof, half an uncomfortable panorama of urban terrorism that just doesn't sit well after Sept.

11. I very much enjoyed the feature's space-age art, its wordplay, and the truly funny sequences of the Girls using their laser-beam eyes to slice the crusts off a stack of sandwiches or cut porthole windows in the split-level they share with their father-creator, the square-jawed Professor Utonium. But once the skyscrapers start to fall, this film about innocents running amok turned me into a Chicken The Powerpuff Girls Movie (Out of four stars) Produced by Donna Castricone; directed by Craig McCracken; written by Charlie Bean, Lauren Faust, Craig McCracken, Paul Rudish and Don Shank; music by James L.
