PAGE 4 THE DAILY NEWS, Huntingdon, Mount Union and Saxton, July 11, 1980 Phils' Staff Shaping Up With a cast of big-name Bob Boone's two-run single pitchers who sport tender sparked a three-run fourth shoulders, abused elbows and inning that triggered other assorted ailments, the victory. Philadelphia Phillies began Maddox the long stretch run toward a possible division title on an encouraging note Thursday night. Dick Ruthven, who spends more time inthe trainer's room than the team physician, got the Phillies off to a good start following the All-Star break, scattering 11 hits over eight innings to spark a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. "When we broke out of spring training we had a pretty decent rotation," said Philadelphia manager Dallas Green. "But it didn't work out that way.

Now we seem to be in pretty decent shape. Ruthven pitched pretty well tonight, (Steve) Carlton is still lefty, Nino (Espinosa) had one heck of a ballgame the other day and (rookie Bob) Walk looks like he's maturing. Now, if we can get Randy Lerch to join the crowd, I think we'll have quite a starting group for the second half." the Walks to Garry and Larry Bowa around third baseman Lenny Randle's error on a Manny Trillo grounder loaded the bases to open the fourth before Boone stroked his game-tying hit off loser Mike Krukow, 610. Bowa scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Pete Rose and pinch hitter Greg Gross knocked in an insurance run in the eighth. Ruthven, now 8-5, was spelled by Dickie Noles, who worked the ninth for his fifth save.

In other NL games, it was New York 2, Pittsburgh Montreal 4, St. Louis Cincinnati 8, Atlanta Los Angeles 4, Houston 3 and San Francisco 9, San Diego 2. In the American League, New York belted Texas, 13-5, Milwaukee edged Boston, 2-1, before dropping the nightcap, 70, Cleveland slammed Toronto, 7-3, Kansas City nipped Detroit, 3-2, Baltimore trounced Chicago, 9-2, California defeated Oakland, 5-1, in the first game before losing, 5-4, and Minnesota trounced Seattle, 12-4. Mets 2, Pirates 0 Pat Zachry, 3-5, who returned from arm surgery in June after a year on the disabled list, tossed a hitter and Lee Mazzilli slammed his seventh home run of the season. Expos 4, Cardinals 3 Ron LeFlore scored on Ken Reitz's throwing error to key a three-run eighth inning and Ellis Valentine drove home a run in his return to the lineup to highlight Montreal's victory.

Reds 8, Braves 6 Dan Driessen hit one of five Cincinnati home runs and added two ground-rule doubles to lead the Reds. Dodgers 4, Astros 3 Ron Cey scored from third on Dave Lopes' two-out bouncer to cap a two-run comeback in the ninth to ease the Dodgers past the Astros. Giants 9, Padres 2 Bob Knepper, 8-9, pitched an eight-hitter and Larry Herndon and Rennie Stennett had three hits apiece to pace the Giants. 54 Cars Enter NASCAR Event International announced Thursday a record 54 cars have been entered for the July 27 NASCAR 500 mile race that could produce a change in leadership among Grand National drivers. Dale Earnhardt, injured in last year's Pocono race, leads the standings, which show only 230 points separating first and sixth place, occupied by Darrell Waltrip.

Victory is worth 180 points. The previous record entry for this stock car event was 45 cars in 1978, the year Benny Parsons set the track qualifying record of 149.236 miles an hour. There will be only 40 starting positions in this 200-lap major racing spectacle that carries a $200,000 purse. Manager Dallas Green met with his players before a workout Wednesday and spoke with them again Thursday night before the Phillies sprung a 3-run fourth inning to down the Chicago Cubs, 5-3, and remain one game behind the division leading Montreal Expos. "We discussed an awful lot of things that I'd like to see In this ballclub in the second half," Green said.

"1 reiterated that we have a darn good ballclub and every type of personnel needed to win this thing. If we pay attention to team baseball, winning baseball, we'll be all right. "We had a good open session today. It was a darn good clubhouse meeting with everyone participating and I think it will benefit the ballclub. It involved a lot of offensive ideas, some thinking pitching-wise and our approach to our work." Green said the Wednesday meeting concerned itself with a published report that eight Phillies' players were going to be questioned in a state investigation into illegally prescribed amphetamines.

"I don't think it was on their minds (tonight)," he said. "We've been through adversity before." Bob Boone sparked the Phillies in their big inning off loser Mike Krukow, 6-10, with a two-run single past third baseman Lenny Randle after walks to Garry Maddox and Larry Bowa sandwiched around a Randle error loaded the bases. Pete Rose drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. Boone, hitting just .223 at the All-Star break, finished 3- for-4 and credited the three- day rest for his big night. Frank Tanana wants to play baseball, and he stresses the word "play." "1 decided I'm going to have a lot of fun and be my own self," the California lef- thander said Thursday after tossing a five-hitter to lead the Angels to a 5-1 victory over the Oakland A's in the first game of a double-header.

Oakland's Rick Langford tossed his 13th complete game of the season in the second to give the A's a 5-4 decision and make Tanana's effort in the opener all the more satisfying. In raising his record to 4-9, Tanana struck out seven and did not walk a batter. It was his fourth complete game of the season. Tony Armas ruined the shutout bid with a home run in the ninth. Carney Lansford drove in Tom Donohue with an unearned run in the sixth to give Tanana a 1-0 lead and the Angels scored four runs in the eighth as Matt Keough fell to 9-9.

The big blow was Don Baylor's first home run of the year. In the nightcap, rookie Mike Davis drove in two runs with a double and a suicide squeeze while Dave Revering, Mitchell Page and Jim Essian added an RBI each in support of Langford, 6-9. Don Aase, 5-9, took the loss. In other games, Milwaukee edged Boston, 2-1 before bowing, 7-0; Cleveland downed Toronto, 7-3; Baltimore hammered Chicago, 9-2; New York swamped Texas, 13-5; Kansas City beat Detroit, 3-2; and Minnesota ripped Seattle, 12-4. In the National League it was New York 2, Pittsburgh Montreal 4, St.

Louis Philadelphia 5, Chicago Cincinnati 8, Atlanta Los Angeles 4, Houston and San Francisco 9, San Diego 2. Brewers 2-0, Red Sox 1-7 Gorman Thomas' single drove in pinch runner Ed Romero with the tie-breaking run in the opener. Boston- rebounded in the nightcap on two home runs by Fred Lynn. Blue Jays 3 Ron Hassey singled in two runs and -John Denny, 8-5, scattered eight hits. Jim Clancy, 7-6, took the loss.

Orioles 9, White Sox 2 Eddie Murray drove in four runs, one with a single that triggered a five-run first and two with a homer in the second to back Scott McGregor, 9-4. Yankees 13, Rangers 5 Reggie Jackson doubled in two runs in a 10-run first inning and later added a two-run homer. Graig Nettles also homered for New York. Royals 3, Tigers 2 Willie Aikens belted a tie-breaking solo homer in the sixth to enable Paul Splittorff to even his record at 6-6. Twins 12, Mariners 4 Jose Morales hit a pair of three-run homers to pace a 20-hit attack that backed the eight-hit pitching of Jerry Koosman.

The victory assures Fiberglas of no worse than a tie for fourth place with Juniata Valley. A nine run second inning opened the gate for Fiberglas and four more tallies in the third proved enough to insure victory. Jack Kemp started and won for Fiberglas with relief help from Ed Clinger and George Sires. Starter Curtis Hack was tagged with the loss for Kyper's. KYPER'S INS.

(UPI) Gary Hess, a former basketball coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College, has decided to operate an educational consulting service in San Diego. Hess, a native of the Pittsburgh area, who announced his resignation during the 1979 80 season, also plans topursue his doctor's degree in the behavior program at the United States International University in San Diego. "I had some opportunities in basketball," Hess said, adding he turned them down for various reasons.

At Wesleyan, his alma mater, Hess produced both regular season and tournament champions in the West Virginia Conference. Ruling On Tose Case Is Given PHILADELPHIA (UPI) A federal court battle between Philadelphia Eagles' owner Leonard Tose and his former accountant, Sidney Forstater, has ended with both men getting less than they wanted.

A jury ruled Thursday that Tose owes Forstater, 52, Dresher, Montgomery County, $69,000 in back pay. Forstater had sought $3 million. He charged Tose defamed him at a 1977 news conference by describing him as a "disloyal employee" who had "collaborated" with bankers to wrest control of the team from his boss. Immediately after the news conference Forstater was fired. But Tose did not pay off his one-year, $100,000 contract, which included $25,000 severance and other fringes, the jury said.

While the jury found Forstater was neither "disloyal" nor a "collaborator," it ruled Tose had not defamed the accountant. Tose, in a $15 million damage suit, had charged Forstater, several local banks and others with conspiring to oust him from the Eagles. But U.S. District Judge Clifford Scott Green 10 days ago dismissed the complaint, saying there was insufficient evidence. The same jury heard Forstater's counter-claim.

'Pose's lawyer, former San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto, said he will appeal the judge's action and the back- pay award to Forstater. Forstater also lost on claims he was entitled to a $100,000 "bonus" for some extra financial work done in the early 1970s, based on a "oral promise" Tose denied making. The jury also ruled that Tose did not owe Forstater another $158,750. This claim was based on a letter Tose signed in 1976 promising to pay the money lor some stock. NEW YORK (UPI) New York Mets right-hander Pat Zachry sometimes has a problem he tries to make every pitch perfect.

On Thursday at Shea Stadium he was almost perfect, shutting out the champion Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on three hits, but still complaining: "1 had an upper body problem with my delivery. Maybe that's why I walked five men." "He also struck out five and pitched pretty well," said New York Manager Joe Torre. "Zachry sometimes thinks too much on the mound and tries to be a perfectionist." Mets center fielder Lee Mazzilli slammed his seventh home run and his sixth in 10 games with one out in the third to make John Candeleria, 5-8, a loser. Mazzilli extended his consecutive game hitting streak to 18 games. "Candy put a fastball in front of me," Mazzilli said.

"With a 2-1 count he doesn't want to put me on base any more than we want their leadoff man Omar Moreno on. It was a good pitch, over the plate." The other Met run came in the same inning an unearned run the result of an error by second baseman Phil Garner. Frank Taveras singled to center field, Steve Henderson bounced to third to Dale Berra, whose throw to second baseman Garner was on the mark, but sailed by Garner into right field. Taveras raced to third and Henderson went all the way to second. Taveras then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by John Stearns.

It was Stearns' eighth of the year and tied him for the N.L. lead. The Mets, winners in 12 of their last 17 games, are one game under .500. They are five games behind Montreal, four behind Philadelphia and 2V- behind Pittsburgh. "The Mets may be young but they always play us tough," said former Met John Milner, now the Pirates first baseman.

"They play Philadelphia and Montreal tough, too. Because they are young doesn't mean they can't play hard. They make almost no mistakes against us." Chuck Tanner, the Pirates manager, said he was not about to count the Mets out. "The Mets are very much a part of the NL East pennant race now," he said. "I respect them and I know my players do.

Last year we had a slogan "we fear no one and we respect everyone 1 I think the Mets are at that stage now." Meanwhile, back in the Mets dressing room, Zachry, 3-5, was still wondering: "If 1 bring my body straight down 1 won't wind up facing straight towards the plate like I was. 1 have to work on that." Craig Swann will face Bert Blyleven in tonight's game. (UPI) A Scranton woman working in an auto refurbishing plant found an interesting object when she kicked a small pile of rubbish Reggie Jackson's 1978 World Series ring. Virginia Overholtz, 33, employed as a secretary at Northern Associates Inc. in this small Lackawanna County town, said she noticed the ring after she kicked "some papers on the ground and dirt." "This object rolls out and across, and it glittered, and it was gold, and it was a ring," she said.

Since Northern Associates refurbishes formerly leased cars, Mrs. Overholtz theorized Jackson may have dropped the ring in a car he was renting. It also may have been lost as a result of the ransacking of Jackson's apartment a year ago, he said. Mrs. Overholtz is a Reggie fan and contacted the Yankee organization to return the ring, which is 14-karat gold and has one large diamond and 22 diamond chips.

It also contains Jackson's name and his number, 44. "Some people are saying I'm stupid for returning it," she said. "I look at it this way. It must have meant a lot to him and it isn't mine." Mrs. Overholtz said she isn't asking for a reward but noted meeting Reggie or getting the chance to see him "close up" would be compensation enough.
