THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER www.philly.com D5 Friday, June 29, 2007 JERRY LODRIGUSS Inquirer Staff Photographer Phillies pinch-runner Jayson Werth (28) heads home with the winning run in the 1 0th inning as a reception committee awaits. Phillies win on Rollins' hit in 10th Phillies 8, Reds 7 Howard, Manuel get all-star invites Two Phillies already have been asked to attend all-star week festivities next month in San Francisco: Charlie Manuel and Ryan Howard. St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who will manage the National League, asked Manuel to join his staff after New York Mets manager Willie Randolph backed out because he is undergoing shoulder surgery. But Manuel also cannot attend because he has a personal commitment he cannot break.

"I was quite honored for him to even ask," Manuel said of La Russa. "I totally wish that I could go." Baseball sources said Howard has been asked to defend his title in the Home Run Derby, even if he makes the National League roster. The decision is Howard's to make. Manuel has kept the Phillies close to the Mets in the NL East despite having the second-worst pitching staff in the league and losing pitchers Freddy Garcia, Jon Lieber, Brett Myers and Tom Gordon to injuries. Manuel also has had to rework a lineup that had expected Pat Burrell and Wes Helms to be run-producers.

"Critics will always say things about you, but that's also part of having this job," Manuel said yesterday. "I love every one of our fans. I enjoy coming to the ballpark. I totally mean that. There are people who are going to say whatever they want about you, but most of the time those people don't really know you.

You've got to be strong and overlook things. But I'm honored somebody like Tony thinks that much of me." Pitching carousel. Lefthander J.A. Happ, who will start tomorrow against the Mets, will be the sixth Phillies pitcher to make his major-league debut this season. The others were Joe Bisenius, Yoel Hernandez, Kyle Kendrick, Zack Segovia and Mike Zagurski.

It's the third time in 40 years the Phillies have had that many pitchers make their big-league debuts with them; they had eight in 1996 and six in 1969. Burrell back? Pat Burrell didn't start for the seventh time in 10 games, but Manuel hinted that the leftfielder could start today in Game 2 of a double-header against Mets righthander John Maine. Burrell is hitting .200 (3 for 15) with a home run and two RBIs against Maine. "I've got to put him back in there and let him play sooner or later," Manuel said. "I didn't sit Pat Burrell on the bench to bench him forever.

He's going to play some." Todd Zolecki Phillies Schedule The Green Light Chase Utley worked a 3-0 count on Reds pitcher MattBelisle in the first inning, then swung away. He hit a two-run homer to right-center field. He worked the same count against Belisle in the third inning. With another green light, he hit a two-run homer to center. we'll have a shot to win the games." Roster moves.

The Phillies placed Jayson Werth on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left wrist after the game. Werth said it is unrelated to his previous injury, which forced him to miss the entire 2006 season. The Phillies recalled catcher Chris Coste from double-A Reading to take his place. The Phillies also optioned righthander Yoel Hernandez to triple-A Ottawa to make room for Durbin. They made room for Durbin on the 40-man roster by placing righthander Scott Mathieson on the 60-day disabled list.

PHILLIES from Dl might be somebody else, but tonight it was me." The victory moved the Phillies within three games of the Mets in the National League East. The Phillies will open a four-game series against the Mets with a day-night double-header today. A four-game sweep would put the Phillies in first place. They swept three games from the Mets earlier this month at Shea Stadium, but these Phils will look decidedly different. The Phillies started Jamie Moyer, Adam Eaton and Cole Hamels in that series.

They will start rookie J.D. Durbin in Game 1 today and Hamels in Game 2. Rookie lefthander J.A. Happ will make his big-league debut tomorrow and rookie righthander Kyle Ken-drick will start Sunday. Pat Burrell, who hit a game-tying home run against his nemesis Billy Wagner in a victory on June 7, has just four hits since and has become a reserve.

"It doesn't matter who's coming into town," Rollins said. "The team in front of us, the team we're playing that day, that's the team we need to beat. This series was important. And of course, the Mets are coming into town and it's good we got the win tonight. We've seen how a devastating loss can carry over for a game or two.

Hopefully a win can carry over for us." The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Utley hit a two-run home run. Utley hit another two-run homer in the third to make it 4-4. Righthander Adam Eaton allowed five runs in six innings, but the Phillies' offense has been hot. Ryan Howard Sports in Brief Stevens elected to hockey Hall COMPILED BY THE INQUIRER STAFF Former New Jersey Devils defenseman Scott Stevens was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame yesterday in his first year of eligibility, along with Mark Messier, Ron Francis and Al Maclnnis. Stevens passed former Washington teammate Larry Murphy (1,615) for most appearances by a defenseman in NHL history on Nov.

26, 2003. Messier is second in NHL career points and Francis is fourth. Maclnnis is third in points by a defense-man. Elsewhere: The Calgary Flames re-signed center Wayne Primeau to a three-year contract and signed defense-man David Hale to a one-year deal. The Vancouver Canucks signed forward Jeff Cowan to a two-year contract extension.

Nashville Predators forward Paul Kariya told team officials he plans to enter free agency. Jurisprudence A woman who worked on the set of the ESPN talk show Cold Pizza is suing the sports cable channel, saying she was fired after complaining about sexual harassment by the show's host and a panelist. In the suit, makeup artist Rita Ragone said she was pinched and fondled by commentator Woody Paige and subjected to crude sexual comments by host Jay Crawford at the studio in Manhattan. "It is not true," Paige said in an e-mail to the Associated Press. He declined further comment.

ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys said the allegations were false. A 23-year-old woman found fatally shot in a Phoenix alley has been identified as the daughter of former NFL lineman Luis Sharpe, authorities said. The body of Leah Tamara Sharpe was discovered Tuesday by a neighborhood resident, and police said they believe it was dumped there. Colleges The NCAA Division II Committee on Infractions put Cheyney University on probation for three years for several "major" violations, including use of ineligible players in football, unethical conduct by former head football coach Lee Brown and a lack of institutional control. The most serious violations took place in the football program, the committee said, and were knowingly committed by Brown, the head coach at Cheyney from 2002 to 2005 who is now an assistant at Alabama State.

Elsewhere: Louisville assistant Marvin Menzies will take over as head coach at New Mexico State, replacing Reggie Theus, who took the Sacramento Kings job. Soccer Hernan Crespo scored twice and Argentina routed a youthful United States team, 4-1, in the Copa America, South America's championship, in Maracaibo, Venezuela. Eddie Johnson had put the U.S. team ahead with a penalty kick in the ninth minute. After beating Mexico on Sunday to win their second straight CONCACAF Gold Cup, the 13th-ranked Americans fielded a team that included six non-regular starters.

Elsewhere: Real Madrid fired coach Fabio Capello less than two weeks after he guided the Spanish power to its first league title in four years. The New York Red Bulls waived defenders Taylor Graham, Tim Regan and Hugh Mac-Donald. Noteworthy Rick Hendrick will not appeal the penalties NASCAR handed Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson, and their crew chiefs will immediately begin their six-race suspensions. Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Fred Evans, arrested over the weekend for refusing to leave a taxi on South Beach and for fighting with officers, was released. The Dallas Mavericks named former NBA head coach Paul Westphal as an assistant to Avery Johnson.

walked with two outs in the fifth and Aaron Rowand singled. Leftfielder Greg Dobbs followed with a two-run double to give the Phils a 6-5 lead. But Ryan Madson couldn't hold it. He allowed a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to give the Reds an 8-7 lead. Abraham Nunez smoked the ball off first baseman Scott Hatteberg's glove with two outs in the eighth for a single and Rollins ripped a ball into the right-field corner.

Third-base coach Steve Smith had Nunez going home all the way, and he scored easily as Rollins reached third for a triple. "That is a great lineup," Reds manager Jerry Narron said. "They might have the best lineup in all of baseball." The Phillies will need to stay hot offensively. They will have three rookies on the mound this weekend and a bullpen that continues to give manager Charlie Manuel fits. "It's a big test," Manuel said.

"It's something we've got to go with. Whoever comes in there is capable of giving us five or six innings. And if they do that, I feel like Mets-Phillies Pitching Matchups At Citizens Bank Park Today at 1:35 p.m. New York RHP Orlando Hernandez (3-3, 2.77 ERA) vs. RHP J.D.

SKIPPACK GOLF CLUB 610-584-4226 By Tim Panaccio INQUIRER STAFF WRITER The Flyers may have hit a snag in their bid to land a free-agent center yesterday when the Buffalo Sabres made multiyear contract offers to Daniel Briere and Chris Drury. The unrestricted free-agent period begins Sunday at noon.

Pat Brisson, the agent for Briere, confirmed last night that an offer had been ten dered. Drury also has a multi-year offer, according to a source close to him. It is believed that both offers are for five years and that Bri-ere's offer matches what he won in salary arbitration last season: $5 million. Sources say he turned down the offer. It is believed that Drury's offer averages no less than $6 million per season.
