CHARLIE LEE ABERNATHY THOMASVILLE Mr. Char- lie Lee Abernathy, 65, a resident of Thomasville, died Saturday, 2007, at Thomasville Medical Center. Mr.

Abernathy was born Aug. 15, 1941, in Bakersville, Mitchell County, a son of the late Earl Cecil and Qunnie Burleson Abernathy. Charlie had been a resident of Thomasville since 1970. He was retired from Brylth Brothers Construction and was of the Baptist faith. On Feb.

6, 1963, he married Nina Gardner, who survives, of the home. Also surviving are his son, David Earl Abernathy, of the home; brother, David Pat Abernathy and wife, Melba, of Bakersville; three sisters, Laura Yelton and husband, George, of Bakersville, Rosa Lee Smith and husband, Lawrence, of Spruce Pine, and Beulah Huskins and husband, Homer Lee, of Salisbury. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville.

The eulogy will be given by his brother-in-law, Danny Soles. Entombment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Abernathy family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and other times at the home. He was the son of the late Viola Higgens and Jesse J. Biddix. He was also preceded in death by his son, Robert Stanley Biddix and former wives, Ruby Rhodes Biddix and Norma Jean Biddix. Mr. Biddix was a lifelong resident of North Carolina and a member of Biltmore Church of God.

He was a veteran on the U.S. Army, serving during World War Il, and held membership with VFW Post 891 and the Moose Lodge of Marion. Survivors include his wife, Crystal Carolyn Davis Biddix, of the home; children, Jerry Biddix and wife, Kathy, of Asheville, Bruce Biddix and wife, Mary, of Raleigh, Danny Biddix and wife, Joy, of Candier, and Rita Conner and husband, Lloyd, of Leicester; stepchildren, Sarita Biggs, of Ridgeland, S.C., Richard Biggs, of Asheville, Cody Davis, of the home, Michael, Johnny, Larry and Gary Davis, all of Candler, and Shirley Davis, of Atlanta; and several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of "Faith at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, with the Rev.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of West Fu- GRACE AZALEE WYKLE CHASTEEN ASHEVILLE Grace Azalee Wykle Chasteen, 86, of 86 Maple Springs Road, Asheville, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at her residence. A native of White Hall, she resided in Buncombe County for over 60 years. She was a of Church of God in Swannanoa.

She was the daughter of the late Jason and Laura Jane Wilkins Wykle, and the wife of the late Joe Hyman Chasteen. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Irene Ray, and Mary Sue Johnson; and one son, Fred Henry Chasteen. Surviving are her daughters, Shirley Lumston, of Asheville, Betty Early and Jurdy Chandler, both of Swannanoa, Eula Mae Ammons, of Asheville; sons, John L. Chasteen, of Leices- ter, Bobby J. Chasteen, of Joe Allen Chasteen, of Candler, and Gary Ray Chasteen and Harold Lee Chasteen, both of Asheville; 22 grandchildren, 15 great- and three great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leonard Cole officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Barkers Creek Cemetery in Sylva.

Eliz- abeth Irene Owens Connor, 80, of 167 Connor Road, Bowman, S.C., died Saturday morning, Jan. 27, 2007, at Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, S.C. Mrs. Connor was born Oct. 8, 1926, a daughter of the late Edward Owens and Hallie Mae Kearney Owens.

She was the widow of the late Thomas Martin Connor. Survivors include her two sons and daughter-in-law, William and Kimberly Owens Connor, of Charleston, S.C., and Robert Martin Connor, of Summerville, S.C.; daughter, Wanda Connor Covert, of Candler, N.C.; sister, Anna Nooks Rosende, of Palmetto, grandchildren, Sarah Covert, Mack Covert, Jennifer Covert, Grace Elizabeth Abbott Connor and Nicholas Connor. 25, 2007, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus. A native of Jacksonville, he was a son of the late Oscar Lee and Elsie Simpson Miller. He was the first to graduate from Clemson University with a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering Technology and went on to work as an engineer with NASA. He was a life fellow of NASA and a fellow of the Institute of Electronic Engineering Technology.

Survivors include his daughter, Jeanette Henry, of Leicester; two sisters, Margie Brown, of Asheville, and Carol O'Hanlon, of Long Island, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. The funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carol O'Hanlon officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m.

Tuesday at Old Stone Church Cemetery in Clemson, S.C. His family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Moore; daughter, Carolyn Pruitt; and son, Raymond Moore. She is survived by her sons, Jerry Moore and wife, Terri, of Nebo, and Larry Moore and wife, Dianne, of Old Fort; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Lou Wykle, Agnes Taylor and Ruby Kuykendall, of Asheville. CHARLES JAMES PADGETT ASHEVILLE Charles James Padgett, 31, of Asheville, died Thursday, Jan.

25, 2007. A Buncombe County native, he as a son of Ruby Mae McElreath Padgett, of Fairview, and James Glen Padgett and wife, Glenda, of Asheville. A four-year U.S. Navy veteran, he served two tours of duty in the Middle East and had worked for several restaurants in the Asheville area. Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Karina Hall Padgett; son, Seth Garrison Padgett, of Asheville; sister, Sharen L.

Glugover and husband, Aaron, of Hilton Head, S.C.; in-laws, E. Wendell and Irma L. Hall, of Orange Park, Fla. The funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church, Swannanoa.

The Rev. J. Frank Cantrell will officiate. Burial will be at noon Tuesday at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, with military honors provided by volunteers of the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. The family will receive friends following the service Monday, and at other times will be at his mother's residence, 3 Wright Lane, Fairview.

Penland Sons Funeral Home, Swannanoa, is caring for the Padgett family. ADA D. WILLIAMS PAINE ASHEVILLE Ada Davall Williams Paine, 93, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at Pisgah Manor Health Care. Mrs.

Paine was a native of Buncombe County and was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Herbert and Sarah Simmons Davall, and by her husbands, Richard Williams, who died in 1941, and George F. Paine, who died in 1990. She was a member of Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. Surviving are her two sons, John V.R. Williams and wife, Ann, of Suitland, and Lee Paine and wife, Judy, of Candler; two grandchildren, Jodi Lunsford and husband, Nelson, and Mark Paine and wife, Robin; and three greatgrandchildren, Daniel and Jennifer Lunsford, and Alex Paine.

The funeral service will be at 2 Tuesday at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, with the Rev. Father Alex H. Hanks officiating. Interment will follow at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

BETTY BALL BRIGMON ALEXANDER Betty Ball Brigmon went to be with Jesus on Sunday, Jan. 28, Mrs. Brigmon was born Feb. 24, 1930, in Buncombe County, where she was a lifelong resident. he a the daughter of the late Virgie Lee Chambers, and was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Brigmon, who died in 1976.

Known as "Nanny or "Nan" to friends and family, Betty had the unwavering ability to lead everyone around her closer to God. She was a wonderful woman with a beautiful soul and a living example of what she believed. Surviving are her son, William Jackson Brigmon, of Travelers Rest, S.C.; daughter, Leisa Roberts and husband, Gary, of Alexander; grandchildren, Jacki Lewis and husband, Chris, Will Brigmon, Candace Hasty and husband, Rodney, and J. Roberts. A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m.

Tuesday in the chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Weaverville. Burial will be in Clark's Chapel Cemetery. As a 50-year member of Britain's Cove Presbyterian Church, Betty's wish was that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Presbyterian Home for Children, 80 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711. Betty, along with her family, would like to acknowledge Dr. Timothy Deering for his faithfulness in friendship and care.

SHEILA LEE BUMGARNER CANDLER Sheila Lee Barnwell Bumgarner, 40, of 18 Hay Field Drive, Candler, a loving, devoted wife, mother and sister, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007. A native of Henderson County, she was a daughter of the late Joy Violet Buckner Martin and Blan Barnwell (Faye), of Fletcher. She was a former employee of Charles D. Owen Manufacturing and Highland Farms Health Care Center.

Surviving in addition to her father are her husband, Michael Eugene Bumgarner; daughters, Julia Lee Bumgarner and Sonya Rose Gibson, both of Candler; brothof River, Michael Deers, Milan, Barnwell (Susie), wayne Martin, of Swannanoa; sister, Olivia Jones, of Whittier; several nieces and nephews. Actress Bertrand dies of cancer THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES Marcheline Bertrand, actress and mother of Angelina Jolie, has died of cancer, her daughter said Sunday. Bertrand died Saturday afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Jolie said in a news release. No age was provided. Jolie, her older brother, James Haven, and her boyfriend, Brad Pitt, were at the hospital Saturday.

A private funeral was planned. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Women's Cancer Research Institute at CedarsSinai.
