Given Today's 11-year ratings dominance, executive producer Jim Bell acknowledges "this isn't a popularity contest. The candidates want to come where the most viewers are." Like its competitors, Today Grammys sing. The Grammy Awards made beautiful music for CBS Sunday.

The 49th annual event, dominated by the Dixie Chicks' five awards, averaged 20.06 million viewers from 8 to 11:30 p.m., according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research. It was the Grammys' highest NBC has won the Tiki Barber sweepstakes. It becomes official today at a hastily arranged news conference at NBC's Rockefeller Center headquarters, for a promised "major talent announcement." How major? Though the just-retired Barber is a football star, NBC Universal czar Jeff Zucker; Olympics chairman Dick Ebersol and NBC News president Steve Capus will all be there. Practically every media outlet in the New World had been trying to tackle the smooth ex-Giants running back. Barber recently turned down a four-year, $10 million deal with Disney because it would have required too much travel to cover ESPN's NFL games, sources say.

He'll do more than sports for NBC. In addition to the NFL studio show, he'll be a regular contributor to Today, reporting on health, fashion, and lifestyle, among other topics, NBC insiders say. The show's expansion to four hours this fall should give Barber more airtime. Also, look for Barber to be viewership since 04, CBS says. The show was up 18 percent from last year, when it aired on a Wednesday, and 7 percent from '05, a Sunday broadcast.

Seattle-bound. Ex-Fox29 news boss Holly Gauntt will join ABC's KOMO in Seattle as news director Feb. 20. Gauntt left WTXF suddenly Jan. 25, only a few days after the has put out feelers to all the candidates.
