Brothers Gang Up as Outlaws in 'The Long Riders' HOLLYWOOD Distant moun rl 1 4 jfy 4 tains changed color, then faded in the twilight. Wind blew along a dirt street lined by 19th century stores and a saloon. A man in black on the sidewalk was warned by a passer-by, "You're gonna get yours tonight' And he did. He met his end at the hands of the notorious Long Riders gang headed by Jesse James and his brother Frank, along with the Miller Brothers, the Younger Brothers and the Ford Brothers. 'The Long Riders" movie set last year was full of brothers David, Keith and Robert Carradine as the Youngers; James and Stacy Keach as the Jameses; Randy and Dennis Quaid as the Millers, and Nicholas and Christopher Guest as tne Fords.

The Keach brothers dreamed up 'The Long Riders" idea 8 years ago. They co-wrote it first as a country musical, rewrote it as a prospective TV mini-series, and finally into its present feature form. "When Jim first told me about it three years ago," recalled Randy Quaid, "I thought, 'Fat chance you'll ever get it off the ground, But then it started coming together, and the script was really good. And it worked." Randy starred in "The Last Detail" and "Bound for Glory." His brother Dennis Quaid starred in "Breaking Away." Keith Carradine feels the opportunity to work with his brothers has been a dream come true. I love it.

Not only because David and Bobby and I have wanted to work together for a long time but because it's given us a chance to sort of get to know each other again. "I think we may have struck paydirt with this picture. You can tell by the way it's shot, by the amount of time spent on things that require more time, by the lack of skimping in money or time in the important places." The movie is violent, but, as Keith noted, "There has to be it's part of what the Long Riders did. "The Long Riders," directed by Walter Hill, rated By BERNARD DREW Gannett News Service Walter Hill's "The Long Riders" casts an affectionate glance at some of the legendary figures of the Old West Frank and Jesse James, and the Younger Brothers, who combined families to form a very successful train robbery gang until they were vanquished in Northfield, and Belle Starr, the Miller Brothers, etc. Portraying the Younger Brothers are the Carradine brothers, David, Keith and Robert. As Frank and Jesse James are Stacy and James Keach (who also co-authored and produced the picture). And the Millers are Randy and Dennis Quaid. The sibling casting lends a cer- silently hiss at the bad ones.

But the bad guys are the good ones in "The Long Riders." And while Hill and his five writers do not go as far as Henry King did when he made "Jesse James" with Tyrone Power and Henry Fonda deified into heroes, Hill does attempt to be distanced as he views the legendary desperadoes and here is where audience identification suffers. We can root for the good guys, and we may root for the bad, if the cards are properly stacked by the director and the script, but we can never root or hiss at the gray ones and everything in "The Long Riders" is gray. Nothing is black or white. Otherwise it is an intelligent, poetically filmed movie revealing the gang at the peak of their success as the film opens. But Jesse wants to marry and later when he has done tain authenticity to the picture which, however well directed by Hill, is unfortunately the mixture, more or less, as before, viewed most recently in Philip Kaufman's 'The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid." It is true that very little new can be added to the western genre.

Everything in fact or legend has been done by somebody else and we have been looking at it all of our lives. The best that can be hoped for is simply a movie that will have us rooting for the good guys just as we Euijm ii Thriller Badly Copies 'Halloween' Movie Review Oil the final survivor (Adrienne King) and the villain. Incredibly, King wins three times. each time letting the villain get away. All of this may fare well with some teens and young adults, because it involves people their age and includes violence and casual sex.

(The rating should be taken seriously here.) But this is still a blunt and unskillful film. Sure, there are a few nice points. King projects a combination of intelligence and fragility, Harry Manfredini's musical score is good, special effects man Tom Savini has a field day. But the lowest point of the movie comes near the end, when it exploits the genuine grief and madness of the villain. By then, things simply aren't fun any more.

The story gives us a long-abandoned summer camp that was once plagued by deaths. Someone tries to restart it. Then, on a nasty Friday the 13th, the deaths resume. They are, of course, awful ones. There's an arrow through the eye, a hatchet in the forehead, some slit throats, a rather messy beheading.

Finally, there's a battle between TRUCKL0AD SALE "Friday the 13th," directed by Sean Cunningham, rated By MIKE HUGHES Gannett News Service A couple years ago, a small movie miracle occurred. A guy named John Carpenter borrowed $400,000 from a college friend, then went out and made a super-cheap scare film called "Halloween." So far, it has made an estimated $40 million. Numbers like that tend to inspire other people in show business, of course. So now comes a film that's a blatant copy of Carpenter's classic. Since Halloween has already been taken, this one is called "Friday the 13th." If this trend continues, we'll soon have scare films called "All Saints Day" and "Ground Hog's Day" and so on.

Eventually, we'll get "Arbor Day," with an unemployed lumberjack swinging his ax at environmentalists. More than that, though, "Friday the 13th" steals big chunks of "Halloween." It copies the style, the pacing, even some of the individual scenes. It copies everything, that is, except the quality. Producer-director Sean Cunningham simply doesn't have the visual skill needed. He tries to make up for it by laying on the gore.
