Ursinus 14, Newport News Apprentice 13 David Ashworth caught a 4-yard pass from Nicholas Dye with 2:57 remaining in the game to lift Ursinus (2-3) to victory over Newport News Apprentice (3-3) in By Mike Jensen INQUIRER STAFF WRITER However it was broken down, the result was a rain-soaked demolition. Yesterday, Penn's defense doubled the point total of Bucknell's offense. The Ambrogi brothers of Havertown easily outscored the Bison. Even Quakers safety and holder Scotty Williams, who had never had a collegiate point before, scored two different ways. Penn's defense dominated early, and the weather took it from there as the host Quakers came away with a 53-7 victory, holding Bucknell to five first downs.

"It was as bad a second half weather-wise as I've experienced," Quakers coach Al Bagnoli said after his team improved to 3-1. "We were a little fortunate with the weather early. You had a chance to put together a drive. We were using 12 footballs for the game. By the end, we couldn't keep one dry.

I'm sure they were using 12, too." The Quakers were up by 31-7 by halftime after Penn's defense scored twice in the second quarter. First, a fumbled Bucknell handoff was knocked into the end zone, where Penn sophomore defensive back Greg Ambrogi recovered it for a 14-0 lead. Later, Quakers linebacker Kory Gedin slammed into Bucknell fullback Josh DeStefano as he caught a shovel pass. The ball popped into the hands of Williams, who took the interception 48 yards for his first career touchdown, pushing the lead to 28-0. Going in, Bucknell coach Tim Landis knew his team was going to have trouble competing with Penn.

He said the Bison (1-4) might have outdone themselves trying to be creative offensively in the first half. "We wouldn't have beaten them, but I don't think we would have turned the ball over as much," Landis said. "We went to more spread sets, no-back stuff." Bucknell finally caught a break late in the half. Defensive end Sean Conover devoured a Pat McDermott pass and held on, giving Bucknell the ball at Penn's 8-yard line with 5 minutes, 38 seconds left in the half. Two plays later, Bucknell quarterback Dante Ross, in the shotgun, fumbled the snap, picked it up, threw a couple of fakes at the Quakers, and ran 5 yards for the score.

The Bison had given Penn all it could handle the last couple of years, but are younger this season and plagued by injuries. Ross is Bucknell's fifth quarterback of the season and fourth starter. Junior running back Kyle Ambrogi joined his younger brother in the scoring column when he ran for two touchdowns in the third quarter. Considering the rain, McDermott, the Quakers' quarterback, looked impressive early. He finished 11 of 23 for 180 yards with two touchdown passes, a 15-yarder to tight end Chris Mizell on Penn's opening drive and a 24-yarder to Matt Carre in the second quarter. "You get them in situations where you think you might have them, and he hits a receiver down the middle," Landis said of McDermott.
