The Navy and Fairchild Engine Airplane Hagerstown, indicated in a joint announcement that the Petrel air-to-surface missile is "one of the more complex" types now in production. The Petrel was described as Death of the Salesman WALK UP TO THE HARDWARE SECTION tomorrow. Probably you'll wait in line to get waited on.

Maybe you'll get what you ask for. But where somebody might easily expand that sale by the mention of a related item or nobody will. As long as there's a waiting line, the clerk figures why should he bother? And the competition for jobs is not keen in this era of peak employment. If the employer asks anything "extra" of his sales clerk, he'll have a vacancy to fill tomorrow. Again nobody wants a depression to cure this slothfulncss.

1 A SEVERE ECONOMIC DEPRESSION Invites a worse hazard in the form of cheaper dollars, increased regimentation of our economy. But I can't help wondering if the lost science of salesmanship isn't reflected in our conduct of international affairs. Free competitive American capitalism is the best economic system in the world. It has blessed our little 7 per cent of the earth's people with more than half of all the world's good things. We have the best product! BUT A LESSER PRODUCT-COMMUNISM has been sold to 100 million new customers in the past 10 years by better salesmen! These have bought.

Its purpose is to give a better understanding of how rural Vermonters live. i Rear Admiral F.S. Withington, GENERALITIES ARE. RARELY FAIR. There are most always exceptions.

So there are still some salesmen left over from another era. But the average chap you encounter in a filling station or behind the piece-goods counter or in the furniture store is no longer a salesman. He's an "order-taker," nothing more. The sales force is the traditional front line of our industrial revolution. The lot of mankind has been made easier, his product better, his standard of living improved only to the extent that he has been able to sell himself or his output.

SHOP THE NOTIONS COUNTER, THE dress shop, the grocery store. Self-service has replaced salesmanship. Prosperity and plentiful jobs have helped to make us all fat. Nobody really wants to change that. But when we got fat, we got lazy.

And one of the most important arts we lost was the art of selling. "But," you say, "we are moving our merchandise anyway." That is so. BUT ADVERTISING IS DOING IT, NOT personal, customer-contact salesmanship. Trick trademarks, catchy jingles, fancy lables, mass media These techniques plus momentum are keeping our merchandise moving. But you'll scour the town before you'll find a really skilled sales person anymore.

And you'll find few of the new crop of graduates who want to be one. Bennett Cerf MERfi MENTION OF THE NAME OF Howard Hughes, millionaire toolmaker and movie tycoon, makes Hollywood folk rush to tell you scores of stories about his rather unconventional, behavior. Hughes is notorously careless about his attire; seeing him for the first time, visitors often refuse point-blank to believe that the unshaven, sloppily dressed young man with the soiled, scuffed white sneakers can possibly be one of the richest and most powerful figures on the West Coast. At one time, the whirlwindy Hughes went on a long-distance telephone kick, tying up the only booth in a Los Angeles drug store for hours at a time. The indignant druggist, unaware of the tycoon's identity, finally ordered him from the premises.

Hughes soon had the phone company install a second booth. "Satisfied now?" he asked. The druggist was not only satisfied, but Dr. George Crane CASE R-319: LOIS.L., 17, IS A VIVACIOUS high school senior. "Dr.

Crane, Lois is fairly popular," her father informed me, "but she has a bad habit that occasionally 'gets her into trouble. "Lois chronically borrows clothes from other girls and then forgets to return them. "She doesn't need those clothes, for her mother outfits her very generously and much beyond the average girl's wardrobe. "But whenever Lois sees anything attractive on any of her girl friends, she wants to wear it. What is wrong with her, anyway? Her older sister never was like that." LOIS, BEING THE YOUNGER DAUGH-ter, is inclined to be the extrovert.

And extroverts have little aversion to borrowing. Remember the Prodigal Son? He was a typical extrovert. The oldest child is more shy and reticent. He hoards his possessions. He is usually squeamish about wearing the clothing of other people and doesn't like for them to borrow his things.

But the extrovert is causal, carefree and careless about meticulous details such as repayment dates and interest rates. "Creditors," said Benjamin Franklin, "have better memories than debtors; they are a superstitious sect, great observers of days and times." Franklin was being humorous in thus describing the introvert creditor) vs. the extrovert (debtor). But his observations are very true. THE INTROVERT ALSO TENDS TO BE extra proud.

He doesn't like to feci under obligations to others. He wishes to win by his own unaided merit. Thus, he may resent following in his father's footsteps, so he launches into a different trade or profession. Saul Pett NEW YORK (A IT WAS A ROUGH WEEK for higher education all around the. world.

But I don't think I'm the Marilyn Monroe type. "The other course is to make a name for yourself as an actress. Even quiet, introvertive Abraham in Biblical times showed the typical independence and extra pride of the introvert.

FOR WHEN FOUR KINGS ATTACKED SO-dom, they captured Abraham's nephew Lot, plus all the city, and routed Sodom's king, plus several other monarchs leagued with him. Abraham then armed his servants and vanquished the four invading kings, recovering Lot and all the other booty. When the King of Sodom later asked Abraham to take all the spoils, except for Uie worn en and children, Abraham replied (Genesis I will not take from a thread to a shoelatchet, and 1 will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, 1 have made Abram rich." Any Prodigal Son would have taken the loot gleefully! But that is a vital difference between introverts vs. extroverts. SOME GIRLS WHO FEEL SOCIALLY Inferior, eagerly wish to "ape" or imitate their more popular classmates, which also explains the desire to wear the latter's clothes, necklaces and other jewlery.

Even early savage tribes did likewise. In fact, they'd eat the heart of brave foes, thinking this would then make them brave, too.
