BARRYMORE from El take this with me into my basic acting class." The premiere of Baby Case led to Barrymores for composer Michael Ogborn; Scott Greer (actor in a musical), for his portrayal of radio commentator Walter Winchell; and outstanding ensemble in a musical. Mum Puppettheatre's five awards and the Arden's four put them in the lead for most awards to an individual theater. They were followed by Villano-va Theatre, which won three, all for its production of the musical Chicago, including one to director Peter M. Donohue, and the Wilma Theater, which also took three. Two of the Wilma awards derived from the work of one person in two categories.

Dael Or-landersmith's play Yellowman, which deals with color discrimination among African Americans, was deemed the best new play, and she won the honor for lead actress in a play for her performance in the Wilma's production. Greer also was a double winner. In addition to the musical-actor prize, he was selected to receive the coveted F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist, which carries a $10,000 stipend. The honor for actor in a play went to the internationally known Canadian Douglas Campbell for his performance in The Dresser at Bristol Riverside Theatre.

However, the maestro canceled a few days before and was replaced Sunday by pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin in the program at Perelman Theater. Schumann resists the frontal assault of sheer virtuosity.

What seem to be ornaments and florid detail evolve into central ideas; grand themes dissolve; echoes and suggestions hang tantalizingly in the ear after what had been made to seem like conclusive thrusts. Three different ensembles performed Schumann pieces, with the Piano Quintet in flat closing the program. Hamelin, a pianist known for his lightning articulation and Lisztian virtuosity, is also an advocate of the high romantic style. In this reading, his role ranged from the sweetly lyrical to the near-explosive. His tone was always lively and inflected, and his gift for meeting the sounds, etched rhythms and phrasing of his fellow musicians added substantially to the conviction of the reading.

His colleagues were from the first ring of the orchestra's strings. Concertmaster David Kim and principal second Kimber-ly Fisher, new assistant principal cellist Efe Baltacigil and principal violist Roberto Diaz brought energy, suavity and intensity to the performance. This was playing by strong individual personalities. The mystery of the second movement and the piano fireworks of the third were aspects of a performance that could be admired on several levels. There was brilliance to spare, but the musical ideas and explorations remained after the dazzle.

Yayoi Numazawa led her colleagues in the String Quartet No. 3, providing them with a model of balance and restraint. Violinist Zachary DePue, violist Che-Hung Chen and cellist John Coen developed an ensemble quick to reveal inner colors and mood shifts in the music. The emotional boundaries were restricted in this reading. Care in realizing the line was more important than the sweep of it.

Clarinetist Donald Montanaro, violist Burchard Tang and pianist Meng-Chieh Liu gave similarly refined readings of the Maerch-enerzaehlungen. These four lyric scenes sounded distant and short of the fantasy implied in the VVI 1' ir 'LL kBaBH BaaaaaaaB kH JHki IBS!
