Thursday, October 2, 2008 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER www.philly.com E9 Downie injured, but spot appears secure The young Flyer strained a knee while fighting with the Capitals' Jay Beagle last night. polit, who was bothered by a foot injury early in camp, took a left-circle pass from Lupul and scored from the slot with 13 minutes, 11 seconds remaining in the second period to snap a scoreless tie. Defenseman Steve Eminger played superbly against his former teammates, contributing an assist, playing on the power play, and killing penalties. Cote decisioned Grant McNeil in a second-period fight. Breakaways.

Alexander Ovech-Mn, coming off a 65-goal season in which he was the league's MVP, was among the Caps' scratches. The Flyers' scratches included Claude Gir-oux, Scottie Upshall, Randy Jones and Ryan Parent. The Flyers released backup goalie Maxime Ouellet. He entered training camp at 187 pounds and scored two goals in the first exhibition, and has been impressive throughout the preseason. Downie could center a physical fourth line that includes wingers Riley Cote and Arron Asham.

Sbisa signed. The Flyers signed defenseman Luca Sbisa, a native of Ozieri, Italy, who was their No. 1 pick in the June draft, to an entry-level contract. If Sbisa, 18, makes the club, he will earn the rookie minimum of the maximum rookie salary is $875,000. Sbisa, selected with the draft pick acquired in the deal that sent Umberger to Columbus, is expected to be sent to juniors and make considerably less.

"Initially, I thought it was his head, but he just strained his knee a little bit," coach John Stevens said after the Flyers' 2-1 exhibition win at the Wachovia Center.

"The first prognosis is that it's not too serious." Downie, 21, probably will have an MR! on the knee. He could miss two weeks, Stevens estimated. Stevens compared Downie to former Flyer R.J. Umberger. "I look at Steve the way I looked at Umby a little last year, where he has the ability to move around to different positions," Stevens said.

A year ago, the Flyers were coming off the worst season in their history, and Downie was given a 20-game suspension for a preseason hit on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond. Today, the Flyers are one of the Eastern Conference's most highly regarded teams. And Downie? The winger-turned-center appears to have earned a spot as a fourth-line center, even though he suffered what the club hoped was only a minor setback last night.

Transactions Minor League Baseball With his ankle aching, the 76ers star watched the morning workout at Penn State. By Kate Fagan INQUIRER STAFF WRITER STATE COLLEGE, Pa. In the long grind of an 82-game NBA season, staying healthy is often a player's primary concern. Sometimes avoiding a nagging injury requires sacrificing an hour or two of early-season court time.

That appeared to be the case yesterday, the second day of the 76ers' training camp at Penn State, as swing-man Andre Iguodala, his left ankle elevated, watched the morning session from a chair along the sideline. The Sixers will be practicing at the Bryce Jordan Center twice a day through Sunday. Iguodala sprained the ankle during Tuesday's night practice. He said he rose for a jumper and landed on someone's foot. He finished the practice.

"It's very, very, very sore," Iguodala said. "But I'm not patient, so I'm ready to get back to practice. I'm not worried about it; I'm cool." At first Iguodala said he did not think he would practice during the night session, but a few minutes later he said he would try to work out. "Guys coming in like Theo Ratliff and Donyell Marshall, guys like that veterans keep the chemistry going," Dalembert said. "We still keep the core players from last year, the core guys, but we make additions of veterans coming and then we're going to be a force." Notes.

Dalembert said he wants to be an all-star this season. On that topic, Iguodala said: "That's a very good thing. That means he's going to have to work hard. He understands what he has to do to get there. Night in and night out, he has a goal." Jared Reiner, a late addition to the training-camp roster, played with power forward Reggie Evans at Iowa.

"I have lots of old bruises from Reggie," Reiner said. "Reggie has this drive in him. He's always been a guy you want on your team." Since the team has added Elton Brand, many have questioned where Evans fits in the Sixers' puzzle. Cheeks said that Brand will cut into many players' minutes, but "the way Evans plays, he's still going to play. And the way he plays is still going to benefit us." Cheeks said he does not have a handle on rookie forward-center Marreese Speights, but he hopes that will change in the next day or two as the Sixers scrimmage more.

You're going to get hurt a little bit, your back is going to hurt, your hamstring is going to hurt. So the more we keep running, the stiffness will pan out and get better." Cheeks added, jokingly, "It's the reason why I'm coaching, because I can't do that anymore." Still, the general consensus from Day 2 is that progress has been made toward cohesion. COMPILED BY THE INQUIRER STAFF The French anti-doping authority has a challenge for Lance Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France champion who has said he will return to cycling. The organization proposed yesterday that Armstrong agree to retesting of his 1999 urine samples to see whether a French newspaper was right when it reported they contained traces of EPO, a banned blood-boosting hormone that enhances endurance.

"The 1998 and 1999 Tour de France samples have not been maintained properly, have been compromised in many ways, and even three years ago could not be tested to provide any meaningful results," Armstrong responded in a statement. "There is simply nothing that I can agree to that would provide any relevant evidence about 1999." A positive test from the samples could not lead to a ban that would thwart the 37-year-old's comeback.
