CATHERINE LANHAM MILLER, resident of Carson City, NV since 1979, died May 7, 2003 at 85 yrs of age at her home; born in Greensburg, IN; daughter of William Henry and Ethel Ewing Lanham; grew up in Greensburg, the 5th generation of 2 families whose pioneer ancestors had helped settle the area. Catherine Ross Lanham attended Indiana University in Bloomington IN; where she was a member of and chapter president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

Graduating in 1 938 with a Bachelor of Music degree, she spent 3 years teaching in the public schools of Evansville IN. The following 3 yrs, during WWII, she worked in Washington DC, most notable with the Office of War Information, working for the government-sponsored advertising campaign "Careless Talk Costs After the war, she held advertising copywriting positions with Crowell-Collier's The American Magazine and Young Rubicam Advertising Agency both headquartered in New York City. Following her 1950 marriage to Robert Blake Miller and a move to the Phila. area where they lived for 27 yrs, she combined homemaking and the mothering of 3 children with a writing career, an unusual lifestyle for Phila. Main Line matrons of the '50s through the 70s.

During those years, the family lived in Bryn Mawr, St. Davids, and finally Charlestown Twp in Chester County. Within this period she held full-time positions as advertising copywriter for TV Guide Magazine, Radnor PA and Copy Chief for the Gerald F. Selinger Advertising Agency in Phila. In 1968, she became a successful freelance journalist.

From 1968 on, she wrote hundreds of articles for national magazines including Good Housekeeping, Harper's Bazaar, Ladies' Home Journal, House Beautiful and other popular publications. In 1971, her book "How to Say Yes to Life: A Woman's Guide to Beating the Blahs" was published by Simon Schuster. Recently described by a prestigious editor as being "a landmark early feminist the book appealed to women who were feeling the stirrings of the new women's movement but were rejecting the pronouncements of angry radical leaders. Her book received much media attention and introduced the word "blahs" into America's everyday vocabulary. In 1 972, she became a newspaper columnist with her essay-type column "Beating the Blahs" which appeared for a year and a half in the Sunday Phila Inquirer, and a later version "Saying Yes to Life" that was published by a number of daily newspapers throughout the country, from 1980-85.

Mrs. Miller was an accomplished speaker, lecturing to large audiences across the nation about "Beating Those I'm Over-the-Hill Blahs." She developed a reputation as a lively talk-show guest, and carried her "beat the blahs" message to televiewers in all parts of the country with over 1 00 appearances including the widely popular syndicated "Mike Douglas Show." At this time she was also traveling the country as a spokesperson for Listerine. Writing was Cathy Miller's career, but playing the piano was her joy and her lifetime hobby. She could play everybody's favorite song in any key, improvising and interpreting the timeless standards of cabaret, Broadway musicals, and the great American songwriters such as Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and Duke Ellington. From 1990-1996 she performed regularly for dinner guests at a restaurant in Carson City.

Whenever she and her husband traveled abroad, often on cruise ships, she found appreciative audiences of listeners from around the world most recently on a Singapore-Bombay-Athens voyage. Mrs. Miller is survived by her 3 children, Robert Blake Miller III and Ross Lanham Miller, both of Carson City and Melissa Ewing Rugge of Santa Barbara CA; also surviving, her grandson, Christopher Blake Ewing Miller who resides in Reno NV. Catherine Lanham Miller was a member of The American Society of Journalists and Authors, a nationwide organization of freelance writers. She has donated her papers to the Lilly Library at Indiana University, Bloomington IN.
