uiemoe'rs of the committee has beea toe of' choosing the' standard automatic freight cars. Some of the members wanted it left to a commission appointed by ttie president, while others favored the selection of a mi Kiel by the interstate commerce commission. The scheme of a special commission was objected to as opening too many opportunities for jobbery, and the mem bets of the inte-- state commerce commission were anxious to escape the responsibility of making the selection themselves, as it involved so many practical questions oa which they did not uretend to be experts. Tbe method adopted by the committee in the bill agreed upon this morning is to leave the dec sion to a vote of the railroads. The yores are to be based on the number of freight cars owned or operated by the various lOids, and 75 per cent of the cast will be necessary to a automatic coupler.

If no such coupler receives a sufficient vote before August, 1893. the inter-state commerce commission shall, within six months, designate a coupler which shall be adopted as the standard. It is probable that the master car builders'type will be by the railroads, and if not selected hv them will be designated as the standaid Uy ths interstate commission, in Pittsbuig. 92-de the AND Twa Ken Ij acted From a Freight Car. A European naturalist points ont an interesting fact about birds and trees to wliich, lie says, no attention has hitherto been paid. This is that curtain species of birds show a preference for particular kinds of trees. According to the observations of this gentleman jays and rooks prefer the oak, tindies the lime-tree, black-caps the laurel, thrushes tbe birch and the ash, and woodpeckers the beech.

while the nightingale loves especially to frequent groves of nut-treoa. If this is so, a very interesting field for observation is ottered, in which young and old cau alike take part. Only a knowledge of the principal varieties of trees and the ability to recognize the common species of birds are required to n't one for investigation in this field. Xo one who has not tried it can form any conception of the intense inturcst that a simple walk tbe fields or woods is capable of awakening when the stroller has some definite objecfii). view, toward which his thoughts and his observations are all tending.

No bettor object of tiie kind could easily be selected than au attempt to settle the question whether certain birds do prefer certain trees, and if no, what trees and birds are oftenest found together. This is an exercise iu natural history that, would have delighted Agassiz, who was continually urging his students to study nature in preference to books.
