THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Thursday, January 20, 2005 Our Southern friends: Comparison of habitat ATLANTANS from Dl our ignorance, but are these fleets of Dukes of Hazzard cars? Or are they simply monster trucks meant to make up for other inadequacies? Boob tubers. Atlantans are more likely to own giant-screen projection televisions than we are. See monster trucks, above. Suds lovers. Belying all those magazine surveys that announce how fat we are, Philadelphians are more likely to drink light beer than Atlantans.

Georgians have a predilection for micro-brews and malt liquor. This paradoxically covers both ends of the spectrum, beer-wise, but it probably means Atlan tans are fun at parties. Fire in the belly. Atlantans are more likely to say they haven't used indigestion aids such as antacids in the last six months, which suggests a certain calmness. Are they naturally placid, or do they simply not care? We Philadelphians know you're not fully engaged in life unless your stomach's roiling.

Daily pain. Here in the city of headaches, we are significantly more likely than Atlantans to say we've taken pills each day for the last 30 days to relieve throbbing temples. Heads only hurt when you use them a lot, we suppose. Salty talk. Atlantans are more likely to go for corn chips, popcorn and potato chips than we are.

We seem to be pretzel people, which is fitting, after all. We Stink. Sadly, we are more likely to say we used deodorant just one to six times in the last seven days. Atlantans, on the other hand, are more likely to say they use deodorant 15 or more times in a week. And you thought the Eagles were the only aggressively offensive Philadelphians.

Prideful vs. shy. Overall, Atlantans are more likely to describe themselves as dominating and authoritarian, yet refined and reserved, which is a dangerous combination. This seems to be your typical passive-aggressive night mare, wrapped in the disarming guise of Southern politeness. Be careful if you should meet any of these folks in town this weekend.

They will be charmingly lethal. We are, by the way, more likely to think of ourselves as broad-minded and tolerant, which is nice. But darn that Philly self-deprecation Atlantans are more likely than we are to call themselves trustworthy, friendly, efficient, romantic, smart, funny and brave. People this self-satisfied generally run for office. Angry Atlantans and others can contact staff writer Alfred Lubrano at 215-854-4969 or alubranophillynews.com.

Frankly, my dear, the Falcons, too, will be gone with the wind. D4 www.philly.com Ice Cube dispenses a family-friendly film performance it onstage, with one notable exception. On the last night of a 1989 tour with Public Enemy, the rappers decided to slip it in at the end of their set at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena. Cube hadn't even ing "Black Korea," blasting Asian merchants in black communities, and "No Vaseline," a harsh attack on his former band mates and the "white Jew" who still managed them. In an unprecedented editori Never has Ice Cube ventured as close to Disneyland as in "Are We There Yet?" gotten through the first verse when a massive disturbance broke out in the audience.

He recalls thinking, "They were right. The song does cause a riot." The ruckus was created by a large al, Billboard, the music industry's bible, pilloried Cube for what it called "the rankest sort of racism and hate-mongering," a criticism that still rankles him. Cube had no acting aspirations un one shot where you see him riding, we used a computer process to put his face on someone else. In the rest of the scene, he's sitting on a bucking anima-tronic horse attached to a train car. He spent all day on that apparatus in 40-degree weather.

Took a lot of hard falls." The falls get even harder in Cube's next film, when he goes from PG to triple X. He takes over from Vin Diesel in the sequel XXX: State of the Union, due in the spring. "That will be the biggest movie I've ever been part of," he says. "I trained for a good five months boxing, running, car-dio, some weightlifting. I got in the best shape of my life." Wow.

Drama, comedy, family film, action star. Is there anything left? "I would love to do a thriller, love to do a horror film," he says. How about saddling up for a nice western? "Naw," Cube drawls. "I ain't really into doing it. That ain't my style." ICE CUBE from Dl His journey from firebrand to family man didn't take place overnight.

Since making his acting debut in Boyz the Hood in 1991, Cube has appeared in 20 films, mixing comedies such as the Friday and Barbershop franchises (he also wrote and produced the former) with dramas such as Three Kings and Torque. But it's a remarkable career trajectory nonetheless. The rapper and actor was born O'Shea Jackson Jr. in Los Angeles. "My mother liked O.J.

Simpson's name, Orenthal, but she didn't want to copy it so she came up with O'Shea. Who knows?" he says, laughing, "maybe my father was Irish." Along with Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, he was one of the founders of the seminal West Coast rap group N.W.A. Their violent and vitriolic debut, Straight Outta Compton, created a furor in 1988, particularly for a profanely titled anti-police manifesto. The FBI and other law-enforcement officials railed against the group.

The song was considered so provocative that N.W.A., at the request of its management, never performed Long, who was in Boyz and is Cube's costar in Are We There Yet? "If you think about rapping, it's kind of like acting," she says. "I think rappers are natural storytellers. So it's not surprising that he can act and be thoughtful about expressing himself." As his acting resume grew, he tried his hand at scriptwriting. "Once again it was John Singleton," he says of his motivation. "While we were doing Boyz he told me, 'If you want to do more movies you might have to start writing, because you won't find a lot of scripts that cater to The resulting comedy, Friday, was a sleeper hit; made for $2.3 million, it earned $27 million and has enjoyed a long and prosperous shelf life on video.

Cube has appeared in a fair amount of mainstream entertainment since then, but never in his career has he ventured as close to Disneyland as he does in Are We There Yet? He plays Nick, a smug bachelor who learns some messy lessons about love and sacrifice while chaperoning two children on a chaotic road trip. The script was originally de veloped with Adam Sandler in mind, until someone recognized its similarity to Sandler's 1999 feature, Big Daddy. At that point Cube was recruited as star and producer. "In our first meeting, I told him he's a great Everyman, like Jimmy Stewart and Tom Hanks, that people can really relate to," says director, Brian Levant. "I think everyone will be surprised by his performance.

He really shows his vulnerability, and displays a tremendous amount of parental love for these kids. Cube is a father of four. You can't fake that stuff." Any comedy about an aloof adult stuck with rambunctious tots follows a certain formula. For Cube, that meant serial slapstick humiliation accompanied by a torrent of bodily fluids. "I had done a lot of stunts before, but this was very, very physical," he says.

While the actor put up with most of it, he drew a firm line at jumping atop a stallion and galloping off in pursuit of the kids, who have stowed away on a freight train. "You couldn't pay him enough to get him up on horseback," says Levant, laughing. "For the group of police officers at the back of the hall who had made a pact to storm the stage if the song was played. "Once we saw it was cops, we ran out the back," Cube says. "I just changed my clothes from what I was wearing onstage and went and sat in the van.

Dre and Ren the group's MC went out the door of the arena and ran all the way back to the hotel." Cube left N.W.A. in 1990, saying he had been ripped off by the group's manager. But his solo career was just as controversial. His 1991 CD Death Certificate, for instance, contained tracks includ til he met a University of Southern California undergrad named John Singleton backstage at The Arsenio Hall Show. "John told me he had a script I would be perfect for.

I gave him my number but I didn't think much of it." A couple of years later, the script for Boyz the Hood arrived, and Cube won high praise playing the thuggish Doughboy in Singleton's 1991 saga about South Central Los Angeles. Going from the recording studio to a soundstage wasn't a big jump, according to actress Nia Contact staff writer David Hiltbrand at 21 5-854-4552 or dhiltbrandphillynews.com.
