6E, Statesman-Journal, Salem, Sunday, October 31, 1982 entertainment 'Annie' is finally scheduled to end long run on Broadway at Keizer 'Halloween NT THE GUPPY IS FINALLY HERE review ACADEMY SQUARE NEW NEW NEW NEW cluding the cast album, four touring companies and the movie version, the spokesman said. Only one touring company remains. When the doors close on Broadway's most famous orphanage, "Annie" will have become Broadway's seventh longest-running musical, with "Grease" still the all-time champion. But the little lady with the curly red hair, white eyes and faithful dog Sandy may be back in a musical sequel called "Annie II." Created by the team that came up with the original "Annie," Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin and Thomas Meehan, the new show is expected to open on Broadway next season, said the spokesman, David Powers. NEW YORK (AP) "Annie." the hit Broadway musical based on the famed cartoon orphan, finally is closing, its and last performance scheduled for Jan.

2, a spokesman for the show said last week. Although sold out for the Thanksgiving holidays, he said, its box office business during non-holiday periods has been going down, leading to the decision of the show's producers to end its long, lucrative run. "Annie," in which five young actresses to date have played the title role, opened on April 21, 1977, and won seven Tonys, including "best musical" of the 1977-78 season. So far, it has grossed more than $200 million from all sources, in That may confirm our suspicions of the horrible potential of television, but it does nothing for the movie. Wallace does pretty well at maintaining our interest, with a minimum of excess, until he stumbles on his own plot twist and then tries to get his hero out alive.

All it takes is some superhuman abilities, incredible luck and unbelievable plot turns to save Atkins. That isn't enough to save "Halloween III." Our only hope is that it will turn into a pumpkin and Carpenter will turn his attention to another innocent holiday. "Halloween III: Season of the Witch," produced by John Carpenter and Debra Hill, directed and written by Tommy Lee Wallace. Now at Keizer Cinemas, rated for I I I VIDEO CO. NOW OPEN! By RON COWAN Of the Statesman-Journal People who go to see movies named "Halloween III: Season of the Witch" probably deserve everything they get.

But sometimes it still seems a bit unfair. What normal mind can put together a stolen five-ton monolith from Stonehenge, Halloween masks, computers, robots, bugs and snakes and Satan, and still come out with anything that makes sense? Supposedly someone named Tommy Lee Wallace, who has written and directed what will hopefully be the last of the "Halloween" movies. THIS ONE DOES NOT expose us to the usual buckets of blood and, at least in its opening half, relies more on the traditional dramatic arts of suspense. Still, you do get to see fingers plunge oozily into a man's eyes, watch a head get pulled off and see an electric drill being plunged into a woman's ear. That is what people pay to see in these films, or so I've heard.

John Carpenter, who directed the first film, co-produces on this third go-round with Debra Hill. He is represented though by snippets of "Halloween," which pop up on televi sion sets a couple of times. THE STORY OPENS WITH a poor man who has stumbled on the dreaded secret of the Shamrock Novelty Co. He soon is dispatched by a robot, apparently in the same bloodied hospital of "Halloween II." Tom Atkins, as a horrified doctor, joins with the man's daughter, Sta-cey Nelson, to pursue the mystery to its logical source, the mysterious Shamrock factory in a strangely quiet Northern California town. There the mystery starts to unravel, sloppily, as Atkins encounters the megalomaniac factory head (Dan O'Herlihy) and discovers the secret of the Halloween masks Shamrock is selling around the country.

THE SECRET INVOLVES the aforementioned monolith, a bevy of robots and the rest of the confusing junk mentioned above. It's virtually incomprehensible, though it does allow for some fancy special effects. It seems to boil down to the masks being able to kill people (with bugs and snakes) when set off by a television ad. VIDEO TAPE RENTALS I Westgate Shopping Center WEST SALEM 655 Wallace Rd.
