Bill's one-time sidekick, Bumbo the Clown (Channel 13 weatherman Bob Caldwell). "Mr. Bill" has been a local fixture since July 1959, when Norwood, a one-time USO entertainer, moved over from a Goodbye From Page 1L grown up watching the show, with me playing a surrogate father. I've met children, and even grandchildren, of people who originally watched the show." Greenville, N.C, station, bringing the character with him. "Except for the summer hiatus, it's been on since," he said.

The program has had several names: "Mr. Bill and the Magic Bus," "Space Patrol," "Mr. Bill's Flying Circus," "Mr. Bill and Bozo" and "Mr. Bill and Bumbo." But the basic format is unchanged: cartoons, guests, school closings, weather and features.

"In 1959, we were doing 2 hours weekday mornings, and an hour in the afternoon, plus a Saturday show, plus every other day, we did it from Greenville (S.C.)." The program originally featured a young studio audience, but it was dropped about 10 years ago, Norwood recalled. "That was the beginning of the liability lawsuit era, and so we dropped the audience to avoid the possibility of a liability situation," he said. When "Mr. Bill" made its debut, many stations ran local children's shows, including the long-gone "Monty's Rascals" on WYFFChannel 4, Greenville, S.C.. and "Loony Tunes" on WCYBChannel 5, Bristol, Va.

Today, most stations attract children with cartoons, often designed to sell a specific toy. "I think it's a sign of the times," Norwood said. I'm not an expert, but the day of personal contact television is just about over. And the day of live television is gone. Today, most programs are prerecorded.

There's less chance of an error, but you miss a certain amount of spontaneity. I've been on live all this time. All the guests were on live." Norwood's new assignment won't give him any extra sleep. "I'll have to get up a little earlier," he said. these two contenders on opening weekend.

One or the other should push "Willow" into third place, once the national weekend box office tally is released Monday. I'd give "Dundee" the top nod, with "Rambo" a close second. The question is: what about the rest of the summer? A theater full of challengers is waiting in the wings, ready to slug it out, including new films from Eddie Murphy and Chevy Chase, plus a follow-up to "Caddyshack," and an unusual live-actionanimated feature from Steven Spielberg. And that's not to mention "Bull Durham," the Kevin Costner baseball drama, partially lensed at Asheville's historic McCormick Field (and in which I landed an extra's part). To borrow a line from the Atlanta Braves, it should be one crazy summer.

From Page 1L opened a taco stand. But despite its boffo opening, "Willow" won't have an easy go of it, now that "Dundee" and i "Rambo" are in the ring. Quality has nothing to do with the box office fracas expected this 'weekend. While "Willow" is a new story with nothing but Lucas and 'director Ron "Opie" Howard to back it up "Dundee" and "Rambo" are both returning champs. The original "Dundee" and 'the first two "Rambo" films were 'megahits, locally and nationally, have built-in audiences waiting for the sequels.

In fact, bowed earlier than planned, just so it wouldn't face Delilah Doing Their Thing By TONY KISS Staff Writer Two former members of one of Asheville's best-known rock bands have switched gears a bit for their latest gig. Bunny Halton and Sherry Shoaf, ex of the rock band Crimes of Fashion, are now performing as the diningdancing duo Delilah, at Grove Park Inn's Sunset Terrace restaurant. The entertainers, who both sing and play keyboard while backed by a drum machine, perform pop standards, soft rock and a few originals, Shoaf said last week. "We're doing more mellow music than we did before," Shoaf said. "We're doing a larger variety of music, since we're on a small patio for a dinner crowd.

But we still feel like we have a rock and roll edge behind us." The two decided to team last fall, and played a few nights at the Grove Park in December, before taking "a couple of months" to hone and polish the act, she said. "I've always worked well with Bunny," Shoaf said. "We have the same musical tastes, and this is an opportunity to work in our town." Performing as a duo, rather than with a five-member band "is more work," she said. "Musically, you have to be more perfect," she said. "If you miss a note, or one of the instruments hits a bad chord, you're not as covered as before." They chose the name Delilah because "we wanted something feminine," she said.

"It's a name Bunny and I tossed around a long time. It doesn't connote anything too soft or too hard." For now, the act is playing 7-11 p.m. Mondays at the dining-only Sunset Terrace, but is also figuring on some out-of-town work, and perhaps other local dates. "We wany to be suitable for all occasions," she said. And they've just completed three months of studio work on a demo tape with local musicians Stuart Reinhardt, David Cohen and Wayne Kirby.

"It's just a start on some original material," she said. Lecture About Shipwreck The world's oldest known shipwreck will be discussed during a Tuesday night lectureslideshow at Pack Library's Lord Auditorium. I The 7 o'clock program, sponsored by Friends of N.C. Archaeology, will examine the 14th century wreck which is off the Turkish coast. The Bronze Age ship was a trading Vessel, carrying copper, glass, ivory, weapons, tools and jewelry.

Lillian Ray, a graduate student at Texas University, will lead the lecture. On June 7, the archaeology group will discuss the art and science of restoring cemeteries, 7 p.m., also at Pack. C. Michael Baker, director of the Foundation for N.C. Archaeology, will lead the discussion.

Both programs are open to the public without charge. ft- 1 lm I SCOTT II I HAMInLT0N Va y- -rV VI Hair On Mondays Delilah: Bunny Halton (right) and Sherry Shoaf.
