OCCASIONAL USE of pot by a healthy person would rarely constitute a health hazard but for certain high-risk smokers, the dangers would be greater, the report said. The report defined high-risk smokers as children and adolescents, persons who are emotionally unstable or mentally ill, and persons with ill. nesses or diseases.

"Marijuana is potentially damaging to health in a variety of ways, but it can be especially harmful when used by a person who is immature, unstable, or already ill," the report said. Potential dangers include: Lungs Long term use can impair lung function and one study indicates it may result in restrictive lung diseases, such as interstital fibrosis. Heart Abnormal heart rhythms are commonly observed in regular users. Smoking only one cigaret can significantly reduce exercise tolerance. a 1 Psychiatric disturbances of various types and degrees have been observed at times to be associated with marijuana use.

Most involve hallucinations, disorientation, and feelings of depersonalization but some have reported flashbacks re-experiencing the drug's effect later. By Ronald Kotulak Science editor AFTER TAKING a second look at the use of marijuana, the American Medical Association AMA has concluded that the widely used compound may be somewhat more dangerous than originally thought. Nevertheless, the AMA called for the liberalization of marijuana laws, reducing the penalty for possession to a fine but reserving criminal prosecution for pushers. The action, taken by the association's policy-making house of delegates in the Palmer House Tuesday, said that the last five years of research show that "marijuana is not a harmless drug." IN 1972, the house said few of the potential adverse effects of the drug were known and there was little conclusive evidence of long-term hazards. Though the newer studies are still vague about the dangers of marijuana, "some of them present convincing evidence of health hazards to certain persons." The delegates voted unanimously to adopt a report by the council on scientific affairs that said that usage patterns have changed since 1972.
