New evidence reported in Rajneesh poison case PORTLAND (AP) New evidence uncovered in the last month pointed toward a Rajneeshee conspiracy in the food poisoning of more than 750 people in The Dalles in 1984, according to reports by a Portland television station. Dr. Laurence Foster, Oregon's deputy epidemiologist, told KPTV Thursday that sophisticated tests enabled investigators to link the salmonella bacteria found in food at 10 restaurants in The Dalles to bacteria found in a laboratory at Rajneeshpuram, the Central Oregon commune founded by followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. Ma Anand Sheela, the Indian guru's former top aide, and Ma Anand Puja, former head of Rajneesh Medical were charged in federal court earlier this week with conspiracy to tamper with consumer products in connection with the food poisoning incidents. Foster said the salmonella found in food samples taken from the restaurants was genetically identical to bacteria found at the commune during an investigation of criminal activities there.

Foster had said earlier that medical evidence seemed to point away from a conspiracy, but said Thursday the new evidence pointed back toward the conspiracy theories first aired when the incidents took place in August and September of 1984. Prosecutors say Sheela and Puja cultured the bacteria at the commune and then had it placed in food at the restaurants. The women intended to disable Wasco County voters before the 1984 general election, prosecutors say. At least 45 people were hospitalized with food poisoning, and more than 750 became Rajneeshee organizations are facing lawsuits filed by four of the restaurants seeking millions of dollars in damages..
