UW Coed's Whereabouts Remain a Mystery Statesman, Salem, Ore. June 19 74 (Sec. II) 21 Licensing Backed For Auto Shops TACOMA, Wash. (AP) -One week after University of Washington freshman Georgeann Hawkins mysteriously disappeared from a Greek Row alley, there are still no clues to her whereabouts. Her parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Warren Hawkins, appear to be losing hope that their daughter is alive and well. tfci "Every day I'm a little bit lower," Hawkins said in an interview Tuesday. "You'd like to hope. But I'm.

too realistic." She was a prom princess and a cheerleader her junior and senior years in high school, Mrs. Hawkins added. "She was a very friendly, very involved youngster; "I keep saying 'was'. I shouldn't say that." "It's a job, raising kids," Hawkins said, holding his head in his hands. "You steer them along and we figured we had both these kids over the hump." The Hawkins' have anoth er daughter, Patricia, 23, who lives in California.

The missing coed is 5-feet-2, weighs 125 pounds, has shoulder-length, light brown hair and is well tanned. She was last seen about I a.m. June 11 in the alley outside the Beta Theta Pi fraternity near the University of Washington campus. She had just been visiting her boy friend. Georgeann exchanged a few words with another friend just outside the fraternity house, then headed down the alley the 200 yards toward her sorority house.

She never arrived and there are no clues. Her parents are convinced she did not leave voluntari-ly. Another University of Washington coed, Lynda Ann Healy, disappeared Jan. 31 from her apartment several blocks away from Geor-geann's sorority. Blood was found in her bedroom and police suspect foul play.

In the past six months, five college women in Oregon and Washington have disappeared from their campuses without explanation. All were between 18 and 21. An international union recommended Tuesday that Oregon revive legislation to set standards and license auto repair shops and auto repair mechanics. Testimony was taken at the Capitol by the Legislative Interim Committee on Labor, Business and Consumer Affairs. It also heard two Salem automotive repair operators endorse the idea of licensing shops but oppose licensing of individu- FLOOR COVERING AND FORMICA FREE ESTIMATES bRAND PH.

Meacham, representing International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said, "If the complaints of poor workmanship are to be reduced or eliminated, qualifications for mechanics must be upgraded. Experience has proven that voluntary methods now used will not accomplish this needed upgrading of skills." He endorsed House Bill 3114 which died in committee late in the 1973 legislative session after extensive drafting and revising work by a committee representing business, labor, consumer and education interests.

Jack Fitts, operator of Fitts Truck Auto Repair in Salem, told the committee he believed licensing of shops would tend to make the owners more responsible to their customers. It is the owner, not his employes, who gets the complaints, Fitts said. THE DEMAND for qualified mechanics would be spurred by shop licensing, he said, with the result that unqualified mechanics would drop out of the trade. Marvin E. Greenlee of Meade Greenlee Salem automotive service shop, predicted the voluntary certification programs for mechanics would be sufficient if the shops are licensed and under pressure to have qualified workers.

Greenlee recommended that all service facilities be licensed, including service stations. "Many consumer complaints are created by lack of experience in communicating with the customer over the price of work at the time the work order is written," Greenlee said. Licensing of shops would help eliminate this problem, he predicted. City-County Jail Merger Plan Started Four Salem prisoners were transferred to Marion County jail Tuesday as a 12-month trial consolidation of the jails began smoothly, county officials said. The new inmates brought the county jail population Tuesday to 73, within 10 of its 83-man limit.

The consolidation is expected to provide better service and reduce costs, according to undersheriff Harold Fritz. Before the consolidation, the county jail had an average population of 63 and the city jail usually two or three prisoners daily. Under terms of the agreement, Salem police personnel will assist with duties at the county jail. The city jail will be used for overflow from the county jail only. Fritz said the trial period would be used to determine whether consolidation is more economical.

If either party decides the trial is not working out, it can be canceled with 30 days notice, Fritz said.
