Both are sons of actor Kirk Douglas. On a visit here in conection with the filming, Joel Douglas said stars of "Cuckoo's Nest" will not be announced until signing of contracts is completed. That has been a major reason for repeated delays in the project, he said. There have been reports, however, that Burt Reynolds is to play one of the major roles. Search is continuing for a 6-foot-tall Indian to play a role which figures prominently in Ken Kesey's novel of life in a mental institution, Douglas said.

The cast will number about 50, including some Salem area residents appearing as extras. Mrs. Hiber says one of them will not be her. "I feel I've got the most exciting job there is. I'm not the least bit interested in acting." By WILMA BONSANTI Staff Writer, The Statesman You won't see her on the screen, but a Salem woman is playing a key role in the upcoming production of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Specified furniture, props and costumes power lines for set lighting countless other details involved in filming all represent the performance of Denise Brooks Hiber.

Her job as a production assistant for "Cuckoo's Nest" is both far removed from Mrs. Hiber's experience as a psychiatric social worker and, she believes, a direct "outgrowth of that experience. The daughter of Dr. Dean Brooks, Oregon State Hospital superintendent, Mrs. Hiber met representatives of Fantasy Films, production company for "Cuckoo's Nest," while she was visiting her parents from Walla Walla, Wash.

Mrs. Hiber accompanied co-producers Michael Douglas and Sol Zaentz and others on a tour of the hospital and discussed with them various aspects of mental illness. offered me the job in February liaison with the hospital staff, technical advice and administrative details; I'm sure, mostly because of my experience, including working at the hospital in high school and college." Mrs. Hiber, 31, formerly was assistant regional director of the Child Guidance Center in Chehalis, arid most recently taught sociology at Whitman College in Walla Walla. Movie-making, she says, "I was never, interested in before.

But I'm very glad I did take this job. It's truly exciting to watch like a puzzle as all the pieces come together." Mrs. Hiber says her employment will continue through the filming, scheduled to start in mid-September in an unused building at the state hospital, "but in what capacity I don't know." She works most directly with Joel Doug.
